  1. I don't, I know when the one is layed and therefore when I should expect one to hatch, if that day passes with no chick I can assume that egg is DIS, if there is any doubt about which order the eggs should have hatched in then I can always candle them.
  2. They were hatched January of this year so by the time they are finished quarantine...
  3. Probably depends how well known the breeder is too, some breeders ring codes are very well known
  4. I guess if you were trying to contact the breeder you would have to call the BCV, although if their is a good chance it came from a certain club (if there is only really one in the area) then you could try them first and ask the secretary
  5. Lucky Cricket!! My dogs LURVE eggs, hadn't even occured to me to give them the clear budgie eggs though, must remember tht next time instead of just chucking them
  6. Yep, and the one on the second rung from the top as well
  7. I don't think any of those babies will be crested (unless any of the very little ones are, certainly the larger ones aren't as I can see their feathers coming in) but their dad is 'Mo' who is a pet type tufted. My show crested pair haven't yet bred this round even though the silly hen has been sitting in the nest box for a couple of weeks now, I think I might have to close it off for a couple of days to give her a bit of a hurry up
  8. Oh my gosh Neat that so wasn't what I was expecting when I opened this thread. As a defence wife I am glad to have my hubby home with me this christmas (well hopefully on this coming Friday anyway), but next year he heads off overseas on a ship and we know he will miss both the boys birthdays and there is always the possibility he may not get home in time for christmas. It is a tough time of year if you don't get to come back to 'Civy street' for chrissy with your family and I hope all those who are missing loved ones overseas have them home very soon.
  9. I'd say no too, I would avoid anything in the onion family
  10. No all the animals are expected to live together harmoniously, if they cause problems they get into trouble The cat, rabbit and dogs all play together in the backyard and some of the budgies will even talk to the dogs through the aviary if they sneak in to the breeding room (there is usually a fence across the door though), the dogs have been around other animals since trhey were tiny puppies so they know they are off limits
  11. That's cool!!! I know a lot of the show birds seem to have what is sometimes called a Japanese crest which is where there is a kind of ruff on their chest as well, personally I'm not so fond of that look.
  12. Yes you did Jimmy, you held the babies of one of them :hi: The others were in the very top cage on that same stand and were probably a little hard to see given I had that stand out for cleaning so it wasn't as bright.
  13. Basically crested and ino have the same theory, the feeling is that putting them together creates a smaller bird so it is more beneficial to put a visual to a split or a split to a split to help keep the size of the chicks up
  14. No reason not to from a health perspective, it just does nothing to help with the size of the bird, that is why I'm thinking of putting them to my biggest show birds :hi: I'm thinking one of those big grey boys I have for the hen, unfortunately I don't really have another show hen to put with the cock so this season I might just put him with a nice pet type just to get some pretty babies and then next season I'll put him to a crestbred or a big normal. I have a really pretty violet dom pied in my aviary (similiar to this hen but not crested) who I have been trying to decide who to breed with so this guy might be the one
  15. I thought of you when I saw them Jess but they were the only two violets there and they were mine, mine, mine They had some other beautiful cresteds though which only came in yesterday, YF2 dom pieds and the like, the violet normal was the nicest of the lot though :hi:
  16. Went to a local bird dealer today to look at nest boxes for my large parrots and came home with a couple of gorgeous crested budgies. They are what you would call a large pet type or small show type ( especially when it comes to cresteds which are smaller to start with anyway) so I haven't yet decided whether I will breed them together or put them to large show birds from my current showy stock We all know how hard it is to get a good photo of a violet bird but they are both the ost beautiful deep violet colour
  17. She also says: sounds like closed breeding to me :grouphug:
  18. I'd say it's a YF2, it will be nice to see it when it has more feather :grouphug:
  19. I would like to think that adding citrus fruit to the diet can simply become part of a good well rounded diet which will serve to increase overall health of the bird anyway and strengthen the immune system, much better than dosing them up on drugs just for the sake of it. I gave mine orange today after reading this, they didn't really show any interest in it but I'll keep adding it once a week until they do, mine get freshly picked tea tree a coupleof times a week which is also said to assist with crop health
  20. Awwww, the poor guy, sounds like he was pretty worried
  21. Jimmy you missed the galahs, the ringnecks and the fish but hey who's counting I did take some others so here are a couple more: giff galah(my male) and a few older ones to placate JB
  22. Got a bit snap happy today so I thought I'd share a few pics... The lorikeets Fruit Tingle in close up (she wouldn't get her face out of the way) Joey Sarge Suzy-if your feeling tired and just can't keep your wings up any longer then hold it up with your foot The girls-Sascha(kelpie) and Josie(Basset Hound) And my boys: Max and Alex
  23. Here is mine, it is about 3 metres by 2.4 metres, this is the corner where the main perches are, they like to sleep here at night but you can see I have a few toys up for them as well
  24. They are like possums even in temperament then  My little brushtail girl here loves to come out and play but she doesn't want to be held she just wants to run up and sit on your shoulder or leap onto the topof her cage and hunt for treats I might have hidden up there  Are they climbers or more of a ground animal?
  25. I would love to know others thoughts on how many breeding stock should be kept over until the next breeding season (ie. not including immature birds not yet assessed).. Should you aim to keep for example your top 50 hens and top 50 cocks or do others aim for a different number?
