  1. Could you just make them out of opaque perspex Daz? Get a glass place to cut and drill the perspex to size for you and use aluminium corner fixings for the edges... that's what I was thinking anyway
  2. In all honesty Dave I don't think anyone really knows for sure. It is generally believed that chicks may be less healthy so yes this could lead to higher mortality rates if conditions were not optimal for the birds.
  3. Yep. Basically to get the most crested babies you would breed two crested birds together BUT these chicks tend to be small and possibly lacking a bit in general vigour. The most recommended pairing is crested to crest bred as that will give a very good percentage of crested babies while helping to keep the size and health up. Crested to non-crestbred will still give a smaller percentage of crested babies as seen here and crestbred to non- crestbred will still throw the odd one. There is a whole extra drama then with genes contributing to whether birds are tufted, half crested or full crested
  4. Not going anywhere I am trying to build a pet type flock of all crested and crest-bred birds. In this case I will be rehoming two of the three uncrested cocks and keeping the two crested cocks, the crestbred hen and one of the crestbred cocks.
  5. No crested is what they call an irritating gene You can breed two cresteds together and get no crested babies and you can breed a crested to an uncrested and get crest babies even if one of the parents isn't a carrier. In this case these two simply paired up in the aviary and I threw them in together, the hen doesn't carry the gene at all. Best to just not think too hard about this one Jimmy
  6. And as usual Elly the camera never does that colour justice
  7. My pet tufted light green opaline boy and his mauve normal hen have six pretty babies at the moment, incredibly all the blue series babies are a most beautiful shade of violet . Number one - violet normal crested cock Number 2 - violet normal cock Number 3 - light green normal cock Number 4 - green normal crested cock (this was the best I could do at showing the crest forming) Number 5 - green cinnamon opaline hen Number 6 - green normal cock
  8. It's one of those addresses that goes to a default page. If you pan onto the product link in the top row and click breeding boxes you'll see them. They are totally plastic and aluminium and they look great, lovely and easy to clean!!
  9. Budgies normally travel very well, infact some love it! Cover atleast three sides of their cage so they don't freak out the first time and just see how they go
  10. I hope so!!! These ones are just pet types but they might just tide my budgie bug over until I have some proper show types to show for it Not sure how 'in condition' your girls are, hopefully once they are in with the boys things might get moving a bit
  11. They aren't sex linked JB, any bird can be split for them.
  12. The girls will be moving in with their boys soon. I am going to wait until next weekend once the crazy dog leaves
  13. Yay again, a second crested baby!! The first has now developed a nice round crest so not a tufted like dad but a proper crested The second one has kind of a whorl, the feathers don't meet nicely in the centre like the first. The oldest is a gorgeous violet and the younger one is light green
  14. Do you mean the second picture? That is a budgie in love with a pink mineral block
  15. Yeah, a bit like the husk off a giant canary seed. I thought of those but having bagged probably a tonne or more of them in my time working in pet shops I felt they were quite prickly and personally didn't think they'd be very nice on the soft skin of a new baby budgie
  16. I have only 8 cages going at the moment. I breed a line of pet types (mainly cresteds now) just to help with the seed money and also breed spangle and crested show types. I haven't got much of a base for my show types yet so I'm breeding mainly normals this year and buying in spangles and cresteds to form my first few pairs to get my stock for next year. I'll be thrilled if I can get about 25 show babies over the next few months to hold over till next year.
  17. You can buy rice husks from pet shops, maybe that was what he was using? I use rolled oats until chicks are a week old, then I add a scoop of seed to the box. At about three weeks average age I ditch everything out of the box and replace with 100% clean seed and add as necessary, I also add a millet spray at this point
  18. You can flat pack me these two spangles
  19. I think I would give itmore time, he is only young and italso depends on his individual temperament and how much handling he had before you got him
  20. Are you sure it's not just a fat pad?
  21. okay, well maybe he is 4 months as I can see now that he doesn't have an iris ring but still definately a boy
  22. Definately a boy but I would say a bit older than 4 months. Do you have a closer photo of the cere and also the side of his face showing his eyes?
  23. I provide all my supplements in optional forms now, either as calcium blocks or in finger drawers (minerals and tonic seed) plus a good selection of healthy fruit/veg and natural branches. The birds will take them as they need them and since I started doing this I haven't had any problems. When I was putting calcium in the water I ended up with two chicks out of four with foot problems (one only mild) and one with an underbite, as with Renee this was possibly just a coincidence but until my current method proves me wrong I'll stick with it, I now have eight chicks in the nest and they have all developed beautifully.
  24. Possums are surprisingly clean animals. The concern with bats is Lyssavirus (sp?) and until I have my rabies shots I am not allowed to handle them for my wildlife organisation, the only time I would is if someone gave meone and I was passing it on to someone else and then I wouldn'ttouch it unless absolutely necessary
  25. They look healthy if that's what you mean. I'm not sure in what respect you mean 'good' I will pay only about $10 each for a regular pet type bird
