Got to admit I'm with Nubbs on the Chaos Theory otherwise known as the 'Butterfly Effect' and 'Fractals' are just awesome.
  2. In the original post it was mentioned the bird had a black tail feather. So if that is indeed the case then the bird is Grey. Mauves have dark blue tails. Sunshine I tried to contact through the PM but you have not returned my message. It was some time ago now. Did you get it?

Good on ya Dave, I am a Christian Pastor and would happily debate the good vs evil or creation vs evolution with anyone, but not on this forum! This is about our hobby BUDGERIGARS! Amen here endenth the sermon.. Clearwing I have lost my faith in Karma. I was baptised 'Church of England' as a child went to Sunday School. As an adult I have read and experienced many things and so at the end of it all I can say I am an 'evolutionist' not a 'creationist'. I, Clearwing would never debate with a pastor over such matters I will leave that for the learned professors such as Richard Dawkins.
  4. On the face of it they will all be Olive Green split to blue and some will be Dominant Pied in both cocks and hens.
  5. Kaz, I am interested to know how you came by this information. In all my research material I have on hand there is no mention of Dom Pied be involved in the development of the Spangle. I remember being told for years that Spangles originated with in an aviary of Recessive Pieds. Even the ANBC Standard in the "Evolution of Colour Varieties" section does not support this. Cyril Rogers account of the Spangle in his book "World of Budgerigars" also makes no mention. The head spot in Spangles is fairly common and has nothing to do with inheritence of any of the current available Pied types. The mutation itself is Leucistic in nature and involves similar process to Pieds.
  6. What you have is a Coolgardie Safe and rare to find in such good condition. Good to see another Australian treasure being restored. Be careful using a wire brush on the wire. As you have already said it is dry but it will also be quite brittle from old age and it is possible that rust (if any) could be holding it together.
  7. It gave Amy the vital clue she needed to get it. Congrats to Amy
  8. Vibrator. :fingerscrossed:
  9. The brand is called Triangle........I will check on if it comes in from over east The seed, as it turns out is Western Australian grown...from KUNNUNURRA Triangle are known as Triangle Agencies are are based in Maddington. They are a wholesale company dealing in a wide range of pet products. Golden Fields is a grain supplied by Symonds Seeds based in Osborne Park and again they are a Wholesale Company like Triangle. These companies will have their regular suppliers of grains but they will source products from other sources should it be required. When I had my home based small bird business going I dealt with both companies for most of my seed requirements. As far as seed mixes go I don't use a ready mix product I buy all seperate and mix to suit. My basic mix consists of- Canary White Millet Jap Millet Yellow Pannicum Millet Hulled Oats Sunflower (Grey Striped) Niger

  11. You have this wrong. They are recessive genes and are located on the sex chromosomes and thus referred to as Sex-linked recessive.
  12. Got home from work and went straight out to the aviary expecting the worst. Well all was good. Before heading of to work this morning I put a potplant saucer on the flight floor this morning and filled it full. Refilled all drinkers with cool water and relocated the smaller cage to the aviary floor and put a saucer in their too. All drinker waters were warm but the big saucer was quite cool. Like nubbs said Coolgardie safe effect. Putting ice blocks in drinkers or freezing the guinea pigs bottles is fine if ya home to add more but having to be away all day they would soon melt and when needed at the hottest part of the day it just would not be there. Having no timer system means the plants suffer too. Came home today and all the silverbeet has wilted. So quick on with the spinklers. Perth summer weather is always hot. Jan and Feb being our hottest months. Renee send the Freo Doc over to the hills will ya mate. I live at the base of the hills and it is always hotter here and the Freo Doctor doesn't always come this far inland. Temp in my loungeroon currently at 1802 hrs is showing 37.5 C.
  13. The two birds I had to wet down seem to have made it through, barely. Both are eating and perching tonight. Hope tomorrow doesn't become their undoing. It is 2127 hrs currently and it is still 32.3 C in my lounge room. Aircon don't get fixed till Tuesday. I have been sleeping in my swag on the lounge room floor as this is the coolest place during the night if a breeze comes through the window. I might just pull the breeders tomorrow as not eggs are laid to worry about and place them in the other flight. I am trying to rig up something to get them though tomorrow. Although the containers are full it is so hot that the water in them gets to hot to drink. I need a larger container so water does not heat up during day.
  14. A few days ago whilst driving over to Seville Grove to patrol a carpark I saw a small flock of Galahs, one Corella and a Galah/Corrella hybrid. Damn it I didn't have time to stop and take a picture cause I was already running late.
  15. It sounds like what you have found are a type of Dermestid beetle. There are many species one which is used by museum curators to remove flesh from dead bodies. I have had these beetles in my nest boxes many times and don't worry about them at all. I have never found larvae to attach themselves to a live subject. Maybe do an internet search and find out exactly what type of grub/beetle you are dealing with.
  16. It was hot all right here is WA. I lost two hens and two other birds arn't lloking so good. Quick dunk into some cool water and drip water into beak. Cross fingers. it is 1838 hrs here and in my loungeroom it is 34.5 C as my aircon is not working. My timer system for the sprinklers dies this morning so I have to hand water. Back to work tomorrow so I hope we don't get to hot during the week as no one is home to do anything should things go pear shaped.

  18. It is a Greywing. It has clearly defined dark throats spots. Grey markings are well defined and quite dark. Clearwings generally have pale porrly defined spots and the grey markings although sometimes heavy are usually quite fuzzy in appearance.
  19. The bird is a heavily marked Light Green Clearwing. As far as judges go. No offence to ol' nubbs, but not all judges in my opinion are experts at variety recognition. In fact some are just down right hopeless. The green colour of the budgies is not produced by a mix of blue + yellow. There is fact no blue pigment in budgies. The only two pigments that exist are black (melanin) and yellow (psittacine). It is these two pigments plus feather structure which cause the various colours we seen in budgies. Knowing how these processes work helps one understand such things as 'dirty clearwings' etc.
  20. Congratualtions Neville. Awesome job.
  21. A Greywing seems to have slipped into the slide show.
  22. So, does this interfere with the nutritional value ? Quite honestly I couldn't tell you Kaz. I would guess it would have the same effect as it does when they do the Rice. I forgot to mention popcorn is similar in that heat is applied and the grain pops. I wouldn't say it was completely devoid of all nutrition. I personally can't really find a reason to use it.
  23. Puffed Millet is found in health stores. It is white millet which has been treated to expand (puff). It is just like rice is treated to give rice bubbles.
  24. They certainly can get into places. I had a baby dugite in my bird room some years ago. I don't fear them as I have worked with them. I just made a catching tool, grabbed a pillow case, caught it and then released it into the bush. Out at Dryandra state forest there some enclosures set up for breeding endangered species...bilby etc. Came across the largest dugite I have ever seen. It had slithered through the fence (cyclone mesh) and back out and up about a foot slithered in again and out. Got itself to the point that it was not going to get out. Don't know how long it was there but it died soon after we saw it.
