Wa State Show & Young Bird Derby
I don't know why the D cup is now being used in WA. I have been out of the hobby for 6-7 years and few things have changed, not all for the better. Correct me if I am wrong Nubbly, Kaz but is it too reduce the amount of seed ending up on the floor of the venue there by reducing any potential for accident of members or public slipping on seed. Could it also be as already mentioned so the judges can see the faeces to ensure the exhibit is well. What ever the reason it is a bit like fashion.... it keeps changing but eventually over time the same things come back in one form or another. Here in WA I use to collect budgie memorabillia of which included some show cages going back to the 50's. These older cages had as part of their structure at one end, a trough in which exhibitors placed their seed. Can anybody tell me what constitutes a standard budgerigar mix for the show cages. This varies on stores and manufacture. I by all seeds individually and mix if required in a ratio to suit the intended target. Not that is an issue for me as I cannot show anyhow but others may need to know.

What Could I Get.
http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=19173 and here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=25470 Thanks Kaz, I found first link, I was more looking for one on pied's but found an answer that said cere's on some cock pieds stay pink. I'm really starting to think 3 I thought were hens are Cock's. Can't get good pics without catching them and it's too hot to chase them in aviary. I guess I wait for mating behaviour for a clue. You need wait no further for clues as to sex. As I said in my original post if the father is Cinnamon he can only produce Daughters who are Cinnamon so all the non Cinnamon young produced will be cocks.

Yeah, sorry GB don't see Spangle in that bird. What you are seeing is the result of the Dom Pied - Recessive combination in comjunction with the Opaline. Recessives have grizzled like feathers and when combined with Opaline they can sometimes appear 'Spangle like' especially when a bird has minimal markings. If the bird was indeed a Spangle it would still show that 'anchor' effect and I see no such effect evident.

What Could I Get.
Going on what information has now been provide it would seem the mother could well be a combination of Dominant Pied and Recessive Pied. The father is split for Recessive Pied as a Recessive Pied daughter has ensued. The cinnamon/grey colour of the father is still in doubt but if he were indeed Cinnamon, all daughters would have been Cinnamon. I would still make the pairing you have orignally mentioned and it is entirely possible that there could be more surprises to come.

Do you cage or colony breed your birds? I do like all that lovely colour and piedness you have there.

What Could I Get.
There are a couple of anomolies with this bird. I can't see if it has an eye ring or not. Can you enlighten us? You state the parents are a Cinnamon Sky cock and a Recessive Pied Grey hen. If so They could not produce such a bird. Can you produce pics of the parent birds? The picture above is of a Mauve Opaline Pied. Which type of pied at this stage is undetermined, I need to see the eye, iris ring or not. A Sky paired to a Mauve can only produce Cobalts. This bird looks Mauve. A Cinnamon father will produce all Cinnamon Daughters and I do not see Cinnamon on this bird. A Recessive can only be produced if both parents are visual Recessive or one is visual and the other split. As for your question. NO. Both birds you wish to use need to be carrying Clearwing and it would appear the hen is not.

Yesterday was a very big dissapointment. Can't blame the jockey this time. Someone put money on her too and the average price on the bookies was 8/1 and paying $3.70 on the tote. What the eventual starting prices were I don't know. Macka those notable (by that I mean people who know their stuff) people are the trainer Adam Durrant (leading WA Trainer) and his father Geoff, the track riders who ride her against others in the stable, the pre-trainer Jason Pateman to name a few. A comment was made last year about her being on a par with stablemate Ma Chienne who incidentally ran second in the 2010 Perth Cup. Chikky's form was excellent and on track with some stunning runs i.e the 4th place to Shock Value when her time was equal to his at 34.28 over the last 600m and she pulled up with a sore leg. She is a small but gutsy little filly (now mare) like her half sister on the mother's side Russian Playmate ($267,490) who is also of small statue. Chikkys'run yesterday was a shocker no doubt about and we are now convinced something is wrong but are at a loss as to what. She jumped well and was mid field, at the 600m mark she was in 6th position. The jockey aimed her a gap large enough for 3 horses for her run home and he reckons she when for about 100m and then nothing. She pulled up in 9th position. She comes back to the stables jig jogging like she hadn't even run a race. As soon as she had her wash down her heart rate was taken and found to be quite high at 136 bpm, 10 - 15 minutes later it was down to 109 bpm. This is of a concern. She had a lung wash and blood tests at last prep and it showed nothing. Maybe something psycological is going on. We just don't know. I await news from the syndicate manager.

Clearwings
Granted there are some lovely Opalines around and I guess at this stage, starting from scratch again, if I came across one I would be quite tempted. Thank you for the wise words re Cinnamon but I am aware of how to identify and I was a judge myself in a past budgie life. The Cinnamon like any variety is a tool and if used correctly can help rather than hinder progress. Of the Cinnamon Clearwings produced only hens would be put back into the Clearwing line whilst the cocks were happily sirited off to the Black Eyes. Result is a certain amount of residual influence from the Cinnamon is carried through to the Clearwings and with Dilutes that are produce regularly from Clearwings with reduced wings markings coupled with the Cinnamon made then better than Normal Cinnamons for Black Eyes, for keeping colour and reduction of markings not necessarily for size or feather, one still needs to out-cross again to Normal Cinnamon.
-
Clearwings
Just as a side note to this topic. My profile picture is of a Light Green Clearwing cock. He is split for Dilute. It took many generations to produce that feather and size (he was around 8-9 inches). The dilutes we obtained at the time came from one source, a guy who bred Normal and Cinnamons and would occasionaly pop out a smacker of a Dilute. We also had another line of Clearwings from a completely difference source which although having size (some were 10 inches long) they had what I call the eighties look. This family also contained a high proportion of birds carrying the Feather Duster gene. We never used Opaline but I did use Cinnamon and Cinnamon Dilutes (Black Eyes). Clearwing I am interested to know why you suggest Opaline for Clearwing breeding.

Clearwings
Dilutes are the way to go too increase size without losing as much wing clarity when compared to crossing out to Normals. You need to find a source of Dilutes that have been bred through good Normals. The problems you will face however are that the Dilute may be split for unwanted varieties, so the best bet here is to find Dilute hens as they will not be split for any sex linked trait but there is still the possibility of being split for other recessive varieties. When you pair Dilutes to Clearwings you will produce 100% Clearwing progeny but they will all be split for Dilute and they will show some markings on the wings. In subsequent generations you will begin to produce Dilute that will look like Clearwings with less wing markings. These Clearwing modified Dilutes have inherited the modifier genes from the Clearwings. Retain any of good size to put back to your Clearwings and also pair some back into the Dilutes. You will need to run a separate line of Dilutes that have the occasional outcross to Normals to retain/improve the size, feather etc. Also keep a line of Clearwings pure for wing clarity.
-
Clearwings
Can you put up ics of the Clearwings you have bred so we may see them. First generation cross out to Normals will of course breed you Normals that are split for Clearwing that is provided that your Clearwing stock are pure Clearwing. These splits when put back to a Clearwing will produce Clearwings that will have increased wings markings. If you are only breeding for wing clarity stick with Clearwing to Clearwing.

She certainly is. She has filled out a little more and now looks like a mare rather than a gangly filly.

Wa State Show & Young Bird Derby
That weekend is the same as Boyup Brook Ute and Truck Muster and Country Misci Festival which I would normally attend. But since this weekend usually costs me around 2 - 300 dollars and I find myself currently on the bread line I might be heading down and take a look at some birds. I will not be absolutely sure until a few days before the weekend though. To all those showing I hope you all do well. To all those working on the day - good on yer.

Chikky is racing tomorrow. Last race Pinjarra track. We have had a few dramas prior to her last rest. Adam the trainer bascially stuffed up with her first up run last prep and put her straight out at 1400m. His stable jockey Alan Kennedy is not our favourite boy at present. In the three rides he has had he has managed to stuff up two of those rides. His last one was jumping her straight out the gate and put her to the front over 1400m. She ran last. his other stuff up she ran 11th. We has expressed our opinons to Adam and that we do not want him as the jockey. We have been told well he is the stable jockey. So he will be riding her tomorrow. Both trainer and jockey are on their last chance tomorrow. This horse is better than she has done and we are all not impressed. Many notable people have said she is the best horse in the stable and that many people can't be wrong. If the jockey stuffs up tomorrow some people may need to hold Tezza and myself back from getting our hands on him. Chikky is now four years old and missed a great deal of her three year old season due to shin soreness but also to an inadequate training prep by the other trainer prior to Adam taking her on. So cross your fingers folks and hope this girl runs well tomorrow. It is a race to suit her. 1000m straight down the Pinjarra Park straight. Her first up ever race start and subsequent win was on this track over this distance.

What's In A Name?
As a member of the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) I am sent a bi-monthly magazine. The letters section sometimes contains some interesting information. This issue especially I found an Editor's reply to a letter worthy of sharing to all on this forum. It may be a tad long but I hope you find it as interesting as I did. Letter author Writes: What's in a name? Over the years I have always been keen to find out why certain things function as they do. These are times when my family tells me it doesn't matter, but nonetheless I remain very inquisitive. One subject that intrigues me is why so many car makes and brands end in the letter 'A'. Recently I've been jotting down the names of vehicles that I see and was surprised to note just how many there are, including Astra, Barina, Berlina, Celica, Corolla, Cortina, Elantra, Festiva, Fiesta, Futura, Granada, Honda, Kia, Lantra, Magna, Mazda, Micra, Nevada, Shara, Seca, Sonata, Tecona, Tida, Toyota, Vectra, Vienta, Ventura, Verada... Do you know if there is any significance in this naming convention? Editor's reply: Research suggest this naming system orignated in the U.S. and derives from the fact that, while there are exceptions, many cars with names ending in consonants have been failures. These include the Rambler, the Pacer, the Hornet and the Matador. Once car-makers discovered this. they quickly decided to switch to vowels. 'E' was considered to be too French for the U.S. where French cars had never sold well. The letter 'I' was discarded because it suggested pluralism. 'U' was never considered because it sounded too Japanese. This left only 'O' and 'A'. In many European languages, words ending in the letter 'O' are male, while those words ending in an 'A' are female. Therefore, the letter 'O' is often reserved for macho cars, such as the Camaro, the Rodeo, and the Monaro, while the letter 'A' is often used for small- to medium-sized cars, such as the Corolla, the Barina and the Fiesta. It's also common for cars to be thought of as females, like ships, which may explain why the letter 'A' is the most common choice.

Getting Rid Of Moisture From Nest
Like clearwing says drill some ventitalation holes as it sounds like your getting a lot of condensation. You could also try a small amount of kitty litter.

The Great Seed Discussion
Now my aviary is up and running again, I can now go back to providing the seed as I did last time in the hobby. I provide the following all in separate dishes. Canary, White Millet, Jap Millet, Pannicum Millet, Red Pannicum Millet, Niger, Hulled Oats, Grey Striped Sunflower seed. Currently at this present time the Pannicum Millet is top of the menu followed by White Millet. The Jap Millet and Canary seed are level pegging followed by the Hulled Oats. The Sunflower, Niger and Red Pannicum are eaten at present in small quantities. I much prefer to feed this way as then the birds choose to eat what they want rather than having to eat because there is nothing else. When breeding if I find a hen and/or cock are leaning towards one particular seed in favour of the mix I provide and will then provide a separte dish of that seed. I feel this way the chick is then getting fed more adequately than it would if the parents are having to spend time sifting through a bowl to find the seed they require. This then assures the chick is getting adequately fed all the time. As an example I had a hen many years ago who would raise her chicks only on White Millet. If that same sized bowl had contained a mixed seed which in all likelyhood would have had around 30% White Millet then what would the outcome have been. The chicks by the way were raised without deficiencies as other supplements were offered.

Culls and Helping the Purchaser
Agreed Renee I have, in the past, mostly definately obtained good birds from Novices. They usually ended up being Novices such as yourself who despite trying to help have their head too far up their **** to listen. So if they then wish to dispose of such birds I will gladly pick them up. At that time I was on little income and could not afford to pay great sums of money to purchase birds and for your information I do believe I also mentioned that I picked up throwaways from breeders of other levels too like those cheque book champs. I was just informing you of how I began in order that you do not make those mistakes and get rid of birds that can, if used correctly, will help rather than hinder you. Some times like you I suffer form the dreaded 'foot in mouth' syndrome I do not always pick the correct words or maybe on some level I do not use the right tone of speech but I am a good person and I don't set out to do harm to anybody. It is in my nature to help people and despite my life being in the toilet right now I still go out of my way help people. I can in all good conscience say I have never set out to deliberately decieve anybody on any matter EVER in all my 52 years! I do not appreciate the inference you have implied and taken out of context any words I have said. Regarding the Goldenfaces. When I first came to your establishment the first bird caught my eye was the Goldenface cock that you did eventually gifted me. Again I say to you I appreciate your generous offer but I now wonder. I have never been one to receive objects gifted to me with first asking if the person really is sure that is their intention and that it is given with no strings attached. I find that in most cases there is always a down side to this generosity. Your attack on me is unregrettably confirming my suspicion that this downside does indeed exist. I tried to tell you that the bird you called a Green was in fact a Goldenfaces and that he was indeed a very good one. You would not let him go but allowed me to purchase a lesser Goldenface cock. I also informed you at that time if you ever find that you do not want the other bird anymore I would gladly take him. If I was the person you wish to paint me I would not have said anything left you to think he was just some ordinary Green bird. I have recieved no phone calls nor messages from you re Goldefaces. Although my home phone will take messages when I retrive them they are unintelligable. My mobile has been disconected. If you still have the birds I would still be interested in them but I will pay for them. I have no further intention of receiving any more birds from you in a gifted format. Of the birds I currenly have in my possession that you last gifted me I shall return to you or pay you the required recompense.

Culls and Helping the Purchaser
I didn't think so. Get your skates on sweetheart, you are going to need them. This thread escaped my notice until today. Renee, I don't see any way to really tip toe around you comment and I also don't see the point so I will be blunt. Renee, as you do not know my web surfing habits please don't presume to know where I have been spending my time today. I have read this thread in many instalments today as I have also being looking for a job (yes I am again unemployed), making/receiving phone calls. If you would care to track my usage on BBC (I also do it on other forums) you will note that I often leave a thread just sitting as I dash off to do something. As I have also hurt my back sitting at the computer for too long is currently a tad painful and on seeking pain relief forgive me if the last thing on my mind is wether or not I have left this thread active or not! Why are you attacking me. Yes, I will take it as an attack. Your statement on wether I will comment or not is none of your business. Just for the record I felt any comment I could make would only echo the writings of others and so felt it unnecessary. But since you seem to want comment, here goes. I have obtained bird from you, purchased and given freely (of which I am grateful). I have not had one pedigree. I did ask, as I always do when obtaining birds. I have birds from Kaz and Gina and although Kaz's computer consumed the records which is no worries, these things happen, Gina has supplied me with a pedigree for all the birds I have obtained from her. I really think you need to reconsider your actions towards those wishing to obtain records. Obviously somebody has upset you and taken this to heart. In 20 years I had this happen many times but I never told the person I would not give them records. Look upon it as an opportunity to enlist a potential club member. The way things are at present, people living on postage stamp sized properties, the hobby cannot afford to turn people away or give out such publicly available bad press. Some have made the comment about hunting pet shops for birds. Here is my own personal take on that. When I am near a bird establishment I will always go in for a look. My main aim is keeping my eye out for something unusual and if found I will purchase the bird. At this juncture in time - just starting out again - I will and have bought a couple of budgies from the 'pet shop' in ecent months , 2 Fallow cocks, 1 Dilute hen, 1 Cinnamon hen and a Grey Green cock. My son purchased the latter two and the other three birds orignated in SA. I have no choice at present to get birds to start with from these sources. As things progress and my employment prospects hopefully improve I will seek other sources.

Pet Shop Trying To Sell "pink" Budgies
Well why doesn't it surprise me that it's another Pets Paradise chain and it seems not limited to just one state. This franchise needs the biggest kick up the you know what!

Ze French Lady?
It is a heavily marked Recessive Pied. GB, not having a go mate but I think if you are quoting directly from a book please aknowledge the souce i.e. Book title, Author etc. I think I know which book you quote from and the author of the day is describing what was applicable for the day. If I am right the description is that of the Easley Clearbody which at the time was seen as a Pied type until a full understanding could be realised. It must be remembered that there are many budgie books on the market and of them only a very small percentage are a reliable scource of information on varieties. Many have simply carried on the mis-information. Same can be said for a lot of websites.
