Getting Started
When buying Show birds from a breeder, you will not be offered the best birds. You will be offered what the breeder will consider to be below his standards. If you do want his good ones... be prepared to argue and pay a high price. If he is a top breeder winning shows his top birds will sell between $3000 to $10,000. To start buy the best that your money can afford and do as Hath has stated. Join a Club and Ask lots of questions. It is the best way to learn.

Anyone?
There are many Budgerigar Clubs around Australia. The best place to start to look is The Australian National Budgerigar Council from there you can get information and links to other organisations. If you are in South East Queensland S.Q.B.B.A. is a good spot as well. Most Clubs charge between $20 to $50 a year with discounts for families. Ring will be extra but will cost around the $12 per 25. (prices differ from club to club) For the money that you pay you will get support and advice from top breeders. I believe that the costs are to low for the information provided. I support my Club in many ways.

Breeding Time
& Breeding Cage 8 Update All 8 eggs are fertile. Eggs 1 & 2 have hatched - Both a day late but here. Egg 3 was due today so that will make it tomorrow or Saturday. The two eggs that I gave you Nerwen was from a 10 egg clutch. That makes 8 in the clutch. 1 was eaten thats 7 but when you and I counted the eggs there were 6. I know all the fostered eggs were there but 1 is missing? I didn't know at the time to look. Hopefully it was under the wood shavings or she has eaten another egg. :budgiedance: Hope she doesn't touch the DG eggs.

When To Let Babies Stay Out The Nest?
I let my chicks out of the nest box after 28 days but they are in the breeding cage untill they are 42 days. If they are eating they are then transfered to the nursary cage with other youngsters until they are 3 months old. Then they are moved to the flight.

Breeding And Scaly Face
No this is not true. Scaly Face is caused by a mite infestation not a virus or desease. Depending how bad he is i would wait until the problem is fixed. He is under stress and breeding is not good while a bird is stressed.

Line Breeding / Inbreeding...
Thank you both. I have seen a few posts regarding this subject and Know to those out side the Fancy that it is a touchy subject. Hense the opening Post. It is a matter that is best put forward to explain what it is all about in a clinical sence. Morally it is up to the indervidual to make up his or her mind. Here is some further information for those that wish to delve deeper into the mechanics of this form of breeding. Information from the Budgerigar Association of America on Line Breeding More information - 1. - 2 - 3 - 4 and one on Budgerigars Inbreeding - Blessing or Curse?

Line Breeding / Inbreeding...
Terri thank you for you point of view. It is alway good to here all sides of a topic and if my first post on this topic is reread it states This topic is in no way meant to promote line breeding but to explain how and why. As far as the issue of health and longertivity issue I know I can't convince you that breeders, and I mean top breeders not the back yard budgerigar factories, are very much into this feature but think about this. A top breed in Perth bought 4 budgies at the last aution for $11,800.00 aud and then paid for them to be shipped across Australia 8000km don't you think he would want these birds to be the healthest and live the longest. This is the level of breeding that I am entering. I don't know if I ill ever get to that level but my view of my birds are to have the healthest and live the longest. This statement should be put to every person that breeds two birds. Terri what you are saying is that no one should breed two birds unless they have their back grounds. But how far back should they go? 2 generations, 4, 10 , 20? You would need to go back many generations to see if the birds are not related at all. This is not always possible unless yu buy your birds directly from a breeder that keeps records. Terri your birds could be related if you got them from the same pet store. If a breed sells all his birds to a store over a year and you buy 3 birds from that store over that period. They may well be all brothers and sisters. Being different colours and types might mean that you don't know they are related. I am very sure that the store will probibly not tell you that they are or who the breeder is. So I guess you shouldn't breed those birds because of lack of that knowledge. Terri you humble me with your comments of how other members precive me. There is one problem that can occur with line breeding and that is fertility it can be lost over time. But I supose that stops the breeder line breeding all togeather.
