Egg Clutches
Information on Candling Eggs. I must stress that you don't put the egg over a candle or you will cook the egg and the possible chick in side.

First Timers
Sorry Aaron I don't understand what it is that you are asking. The egg will be either fertile or infertile. As I said you will need to "candle the eggs" to see if they are fertile or wait for 18 days from the laying of the second egg to see if they hatch. "Candling the eggs" mean to put a strong light behind the egg to "See" through the shell. I use an LED Torch. You can get one from Woolworths for about $5au. If you are asking if they could be fertile because this is there 1st time. That depends on thier age and condition when mating. Just because it is their 1st time doesn't mean good or bad. Success or Failure in the fertility area. You know one this. The hen is fertile. Until you find out if the eggs are fertile you don't know if the cock is fertile. Best of luck.

Here is an example Brother & Sister Daughter. Daughter won BEST BLACK-EYE in the February Show.

Mother And Son ?
Common practise is Aunt to nephew or Uncle to Neice. Grand Father to Granddaughter. This is with Show Birds though.

How Do I Start Ringing?
Numbered rings can be bought from some pet stores. You can get numbered split rings or solid rings. The numbering is only 2 or 3 digits eg 21 or 213. To get the Numbered breeders rings you have to be in a club or contact the manufacture direct. As Bubbles wrote, it is not easy to start with but you do get the hang of it. after time :fear

Sign Of A Good Mom?
Well it depends on what you call a good Mom? I seems that she is doing all the right things but she will need to lay the fertile eggs, hatch the chicks & feed them. Time will tell. All the best though.

Mother And Son ?
Budgies don't usually recognise their young after they leave the box. She will think it is another male. As Hath said just don't give them a nest box and they will be fine.

Help Me!
If the eyes are red it is a albion lacewing. If the eyes are black with no irus ring it is a black eyed clear.

Fat Budgies
I'd agree with Rainbow. The wild Budgerigar lives in arid areas of central Australia. One of the driest continents in the world. They live on what they can find. They breed when the conditions are right. It is not unusual for a hen to desert the nest if food becomes scase. They are not the best parents in the parrot family. So the wild budgerigar is a small colourless parrot. Green and yellow. It is not until we genetically alter or allow nature to alter them that we get larger bulkier birds. I run my larger birds between 40 to 80grams. But they are usually around the 50 gram mark.

Egg Clutches
I would now start to candle the eggs to see if the first two are fertile. You can do this after about 5 to 10 days.

Budgie Breeding ?
In our club the experienced breeders help the new comers. Pity about other clubs.

Fat Budgies
sounds like a good idea.

Egg Clutches
If you haven't done so, it might pay to clip a few feathers away from both bird's vent. It will help with the matings.

Eggs And Babies
Can you post some photos for Nerwen and I to look at????

Budgie Breeding ?
This is normal. Some breeders don't want to be found. It's a pitty. At least you have the age.

Three Massive Fat Chicks!
Congratulations. Hope all goes well.

Mites And Invermectin
If the infestation is not too bad. Baby Oil, Vasaline or-petrolium Jelly on the cere, legs and feet every day will get rid of the problem. Becareful not to block the nostrils on the cere. I am sorry for your loss.

My New Budgies
- Budgie Breeding ?
How long have you had this bird. It maybe that she has been breeding and that the chicks don't meet the breeder's expectations. If this is the case she would be okay to breed. I'd contact the local budgie group, give them her ring number and they maybe able to track down the breeder. You could get more information that way. All my rings are registered and any one with my chicks can track them back to me. - Budgie Breeding ?
