Hi Does anyone have any instructions on how to make an egg incubator? I want it for quail and budgie eggs mostly. Do budgie eggs successfully hatch from incubators? Thanks

Hi Summer has been having big green droppings today and I am wondering if it is a disease or egg droppings... She layed an egg today. She layed the egg on the ground of the cage instead of the nesting box, I do not know why she did this as she spends alot of her time in the nest box. I moved the egg into the nest box to show her that this is where you lay from now on. Did I do the right thing? The egg was not cracked but it would have fell about 20 cm so I have low hopes for the chick inside.. Here is a picture of the droppings. http://i34.tinypic.com/20fagk0.jpg Thank you

Hi I am about 8 feet away from the cage when I check her and I doubt she can hear or see me. It is pitch black. She does not move the entire time, she is asleep... I would be disturbing her if I woke her up while she was in the nest but the fact is she does not go in their at night. Thanks.

Hi neat Thanks for the reply. I have seen all those videos and I have seen alot of pictures of candling eggs. I was on a site that said if it had a big spot it meant that the chick had died in the shell. I can only hope.HiI have had the bad flue + asthma for 5 days now. I have not been able to sleep during the night and I always go out the back and see if she is sitting on the eggs or not, I usually check once an hour. She definitly is not incubating over night unless she goes in when I am not their but I highly doubt it, she cannot hear me approaching. She is sound asleep snuggled up with sumo for warmth. That is why I had low hopes with the eggs surviving. Not being incubated for 10 nights would surley mean death, even if she does incubate during the day. I will still keep my fingers crossed. I am going to try make a bird incubator for the quail eggs because half the time they lay 15 eggs and only sit on 7. Maybe it can work for budgies and I can just handfeed them. I have hand fed alot of budgies that were attacked by the parents and they were very tame birds and still are.

Realy??? That is great news. I have yet another question. I have been reading that show budgies die very early... (4-6 years old..). I have english budgies (show budgies). I do not show them. Is it because show budgies are showed and taken around the world that they die so young? My budgies stay in the avairy like any other pet budgie, will they also die young? What is the cause of english budgies dieing so young but pet budgies live for 13+ years. I call my budgies "english budgies" simply because I have never taken a bird to a show in my life. I have show budgies I bought from a breeder that lived to be 9 years old... was that a miracle? Thanks

HI Charlie2479 The droppings are the normal size. She either only goes in the nest box when I walk past as if she is hiding from us or she and bull are in their together doing somthing. This is the only pair of budgies I havent seen mate yet. She is bonded very well with bull but I'm not sure, maybe they just dont feel like it. I am worried if I take them out she will start laying on the ground in the avairy, It is just my luck. Or if I leave them in their to long they will die because they get no excersise... I tried covering the hole but she ate right through the paper the minute I put it in their. The perches are firm and they do not wobble. Their is shavings in the nest box but she has removed most of them or ate them. Your post did help me thank you very much for it Update on grunt and sumo: Grunt is incubating alot more during the day but still not at night. She has layed 5 eggs now and I candled them as advised. I think they are infertile but I will try explain what the eggs look like. They are clear with a dot on one side with little lines coming from it. I was told this means the chick is in their but it is dead They probably froze over night. Thanks all.

My Cage Progress
Good job. You will have to make a base or rodents will dig under and kill your birds. Dig a hole under where the avairy sits and put pavers their or cement it, that way rats cant burrow up and hurt your birds. And as Liv said, If you dont secure that avairy to the ground, it will blow over and the birds will fly straight out. Other than that it looks quite good. P.S you could attach the avairy to the fence with a few closed brackets or somthing, that way it wont blow over Good luck

Mutation Help Please
Thanks very much When I put primo and Banana in a breeding cage in a few months time do you know what the offspring would be? Any yellowface blues? P.S= This is my understanding of colour mutations, correct me if its wrong please... (Mutations are so hard to understand) Yellow based budgie - Light green (no dark factor) Dark green (1 dark factor) Olive green (2 dark factors) White based budgie - Skyblue (no dark factor) Cobalt (1 dark factor) Mauve (2 dark factors) Grey factor - white based budgie will turn grey? Green based budgie will turn grey green? Where does violet come in? Where does albino or lutino come in? Thanks very much

Mutation Help Please
Hi Could someone please tell me the mutations/genetics/ of each of these budgies. Also could you tell me the aproximate age. Thanks. This photo is of koko and banana, KOKO is the blue normal and banana is the yellowface. This is Primo Primo Wings Primo has no iris ring so could be a pied or somthing. Banana could be a yellowface opaline? She has white iris, This is probably incorect but she has yellow all through her blue body so doesnt that mean yellowface type 1? koko looks to be a blue normal with white iris. Thanks very much.

The seed falls through the grate because my budgies eat like pigs. They dig down deep in the dish and throw away all the other seed. Seed on the ground like that would probably attract rodents. I clean the trays out every 4 days. The tray is clean now. P.S: You probably already know this but you can get those tube feeders which you fill with seed and attach it to the side of the cage. I do not use these as I have the same problem with everyone I have, The seed gets jammed or clogged up and the budgies starve. P.S: Good luck with your bird breeding :rip: Thanks for the help.

Size Dimensions Needed For A Pair Of Cockatiels.
Hi I have a pair of cockatiels, 1 male and 1 female. I built a cage and i'm not sure if it is big enough for them both. They will not be breeding it will just be what they live in. It is 1 meter 30 centimeters tall, 1 meter wide and 90 centimeters from front to back. Would that be okay for them to live in? they are bonded very well as they have been together for years. It will have no nest box, 3 perches front to back (2 up high and 1 down low) and feed stations hung to the side of the wire. I realise their is not much room to fly around but I am just checking if it is big enough. Thanks for your time. Edit: I just saw the notice saying I cant post other bird questions here. Feel free to lock this thread. Sorry.

Hi I've asked alot of questions today but I just have one more. Grunt (The female on eggs) is starting to have some different droppings to what I usually see. They are either grey and slim with a wet patch around or big piles of it. I am sorry if this grosses anyone out. I have 2 pictures that arent the best but they show the big piles of it. Should I take her to the vet? Or is it just because she has layed eggs that the droppings are grey and wet? Thanks for your time. P.S: One more question.. I'm just wondering when you all feed your birds? I feed mine at 4 pm and I am just wondering if that is a good time? Is morning better or afternoon? Sorry for all the questions

Thank you. Mine are crossed to. Here are some pictures of my female quail on eggs, I dont know if they are fertile or not. I find that with my quails, they lay eggs anywhere then when they have enough they push them all into one big pile. Its really cool.

Hi That is good news then. I thought that the first second and third egg would have died by the time she starts incubating. "When the hen starts to lay eggs, she will lay an egg every other day. A clutch of eggs is normally anywhere from 4 to 6 eggs, but sometimes 8 or more. A new hen may not start to brood the eggs until the second or even third egg is laid" I got that from a website and I couldnt find any information saying otherwise so I just thought they would be dead by now. Sorry. Thanks very much

HI Last night I had the flu so I was up all night. Every hour or so I went to check on the birds and gruntis sleeping outside with sumo. She incubates during the day a little bit. She goes in and lays the egg then comes out and mates with sumo countless times. I always thought that they incubated after the 2nd egg was laid, is it possible that these 4 eggs could still be alive if she hasnt incubated much? The oldest is 8 days old and I thought if she wasnt incubating it would not survive.. Thanks very much

Hi Grunt has laid 4 eggs now but only incubates during the day... Can chicks in the eggs survive if they are only incubated during the day? I do not know why she doesnt sit on them at night. No other eggs from any other pairs yet, I think I might put them back in the avairy because it has been 4 weeks.

My First Cabinet Pairs.
Hi I looked at your "Oh No!" thread with barney and lady when you first made it. Although I cannot see the budgies very well in this thread, I saw barney and lady and I think they are an excellent pair. I love your setup to. Good luck with everything.

Update: Grunt now has 3 eggs and another is due tomorow. Their are some droppings on the eggs which leads me to beleive she is having trouble passing it? They get plenty of calcium so I am not sure what the problem could be their... any ideas?? If a normal grey female budgie had chicks with a normal cobalt male what would the outcomes be? I may have asked this before but I honestly forget. Here is what I think: Grey is dominant over blue so the chicks would be all grey? Am I right? Thanks P.S: Is their a way to tell if your budgie is split for another colour? example: If I have a grey green bird and it is split with blue will I be able to tell he is split blue?"
