  1. okay I will use it tomorow thanks KAZ Update: Summer is on 6 eggs. The first egg that fell off the perch was due to hatch today but did not. I am guessing it was addled when it fell and the baby died.. Next egg due to hatch on saturday. Neon is on 6 eggs. First egg is due to hatch next monday. Her eggs are considerably smaller than summers I dont know if that means anything. Beauty is on 5 eggs. First egg is due on next wednesday. All is going well. Thanks
  2. Hi I bought some bird mite spray today but I am not sure it is the right stuff. Latley some of my birds have been itching themselves abit so I thought I may aswell spray them for lice. Here is the item I bought. Aristopet Bird mite and lice spray Active constituents: 0.5g/L pyrethrins 5g/L Piperonyl Butoxide It is a 500 ml spray bottle. Has anyone ever used this product before? Does it have the right ingredients to treat mites and lice? I do not want to use it until I know for sure it will get rid of the mites and lice. If it is usable: How often do I need to spray the birds with it? Is one spray enough for their entire lifetime? once a month? once a week? It does not say how often to spray on the bottle it just says spray 40 cm away from the bird. Also, Is iverctmin just for scaly face and scaly legs in budgies? Today I saw a feather mite treatment that had 0.1 % iverctmin in it.. Maybe Iverctmin would get rid of feather mites to? Thanks very much for your time.
  3. Hello all Thank you very much for the help. Summers first egg is due in 2 days. I tried candleing them but I cannot see anything, They are not clear but I cannot see veins. I am in the process of building a shed to put breeder cages in. Thanks very much
  4. Hello Summer is now on 5 eggs, 4 white and one pink egg. I am guessing that is 4 fertile and 1 infertile. Thunder and neon are now on 4 eggs. 2 White 2 pink. I have been reading that if you put an out of condition female in a breeder cage she can come into condition really fast. Here is grunts cere currently. Last week her cere was lighter than this so I am wondering fi she is coming into condition now? If she is not I will take her out of the breeding cage as their is no point keeping her in their. Her health is fine and she is being fed well. THanks for your time
  5. Hi I have just started making records for my birds using a few computer programs and a booklet I bought. I know I have asked what chicks I will get for some of my pairs before but beleive me, I cannot find where I asked it/the answers. If somebody wouldn't mind telling me the offspring I wil get from each pair with percentages, I would greatley appreciate it. Here goes.. Cobalt male normal - grey normal hen I am thinking all grey as grey is dominant but I'm not sure Opaline cinnamon yellow face grey hen - normal skyblue male I have no idea on this pair... Hoping for some yellowface and opalines... yellow reccessive pied male - dark green spangle hen skyblue normal male - grey green normal hen Olive ressesive pied male - yellow face opaline sky blue hen Cobalt normal male - Opaline cinnamon yellowface grey hen THanks very much.
  6. Hi Thanks for that **Liv** I gave some to all of the birds and only chomper has tried it so far, he likes it. I have some more pictures. I hope this is not to many pictures, if so please tell me. Also, is someone able to tell me the average weight of an english/show budgie? My biggest is bluey and he is 70 grams. I can show you a picture of him if needed. He is quite large. Thanks very much,.
  7. Hi all Could someone please tell me if this is a bottle brush tree. I think it is but I do not want to risk it until I know for sure. THanks very much Also, Could somebody please tell me the average weight of a show budgie? I weighed my biggest today and he is 75 grams. Is that a good size?
  8. Hi I have read that birds can come back into condition quickly if paired with a mate. Should I remove them back to the avairy? I knew she wasn't in condition I just thought if I put her in the cage with a male she would come back into condition. Also, can a picture of 2 budgies be entered into budgie of the month? I have only entered once before and I did quite well. Thanks very much for all the posts.
  9. HI Here are some updated pictures I took today. Neon and summer were in the nest boxes so sadly I could not get a photo. AS you can see they have been eating alot of corn.
  10. I was thinking that kaz. None of my birds have psittacosis as far as I am aware but I thought I would check just incase as I lost all my quails. Thanks very much **Liv** I will try find a small led torch. If you dont mind me asking, how do you know that your egg is a double yoker? I do not know if it is my eye sight but all I see is the bottom half of the egg is yellow and the top half is dark. That is similar to what I am seeing in my birds eggs. Some are yellow with dots and veins and some are very dark with air pockets, one of the eggs has 2 air pockets... May I also ask what bedding you are using in your nest? It looks like poridge oats to me. I hope the egg hatches for you. Thanks very much Could someone help me find out if the shell grit I have is insoluble or soluble? Here are some pictures. So far I have read that some grits are good for birds and some are not. Soluble means that it breaks up in the birds stomach and it is good for them? Insoluble means it does not break up and sits in the stomach and grinds up food, since budgies already have a gizzard they dont need this type of grit?? The grit I have is made up of small sea shells and ground up cuttle bone as far as I can see. I have not used it yet as I am getting mixed opinions on whether to use it or not. Some breeders use it and some do not. Is mine good for the birds or should I not use it? THanks very very much for all the help.
  11. Thanks very much I will try get into the vet tomorow. Has anyone here had any problems when candling/handling eggs? What if a disease on your hands goes through the egg shell and kills the developing budgie? What if the scent you leave behind in the nest box discourages the hen from wanting to incubate? Or worse, makes her chuck all the eggs out? I dont think I will risk it.
  12. Thanks very much KAZ I have just one more set of questions. What is the name of the medication used to treat psittacosis in budgies? Preferably somthing I can give in their seed or water... Do I have to go to a vet to get the medication or can it be purchased from a shop or online? I remember someone saying that doxycycline -50 was a treatment for it but I forget now. Thanks very much
  13. Hi I used ivermectin on each bird in the avairy and managed to do it right. It stinks somthing shocking. How long does it last for? Does it stop mites for a few months and then I need to apply it again? Thanks very much.
  14. HI I like number 1 best. But that is just my personal opinion and I am not a show breeder. Good luck with who ever you choose.
  15. Hi I candled summer and beautys eggs with no sucess. Some of the eggs were yellow with a black dot on one end of the egg. Some had veins and dark areas but had 1 air pocket at each end... some were clear with a dot on one side of the egg with lines branching out from it. I am not going to candle the eggs anymore I am no good at it. I will just let her sit on them for 30 days and if none hatch, I will remove them. They mate together 24/7 so I am just hoping that they are fertile. Also, Can I use iverctmin scaly face treatment on a ring neck dove? Thanks very much
  16. Yeah I was thinking that. All the quails dieing but no budgies or dove... seems strange to me. I am going to re cement the base of the avairy tomorow and give it a good clean out. I have some iverctmin. Do You only give it to birds with scaly face or do you give it to all birds as a prevention so they will not get scaly face? Thanks very much.
  17. The bird mesh is 8 mm and I have 2 sheets of it together and overlapping so the squares are half the size.
  18. Hi I had mice problems in my previous avairy so I made sure my current one is rat proof. Their is absolutley 0% chance of any vermin/snakes getting in. The entire base of the avairy is cement. I dug a trench on the outskirts of the avairy and cemented 1 foot deep. Unless they can get through bird wire their is no way I have a rat problem. Maybe the quails got spooked by somthing? THanks very much for the post.
  19. Hi Everyone I have just got back from a 4 day holiday at Rainbow Bay, Coolangatta. I have some good news and some very bad news. Good news: Neon and thunder now have 2 eggs. Summer and chomper now have 4. Beauty and beast now have 4. Bad news: My parents were coming round to feed the birds while I was away. On saturday he noticed that 2 quails in the big avairy had died in the food dish.. He buried them and forgot to tell me about it. Today he called me up and said that he found my 6 other quails dead in the feed dish.. I then packed up and came home. Their is no possibility of rats or snakes. My dove has a broken wing and cannot fly so he sits on the ground 24/7, how come all quails died and he did not... Maybe it is just a disease the quails got and only quails can get it... my budgies and dove are fine. They were all huddled up in the feed dish when he found them. Now that I think of it, on thursday before I left I noticed all the quails huddled up together in the corner, I thought nothing of it... Maybe they were sick and I couldn't see it. I feel very bad. I have moved all the birds out of the avairy until I find the problem. Thanks for your time.
  20. okay Thank you very much KAZ. Have any of your budgies stopped laying at 2 eggs? Or skipped 2 days? Thanks very much for the help. I will post some pictures and updates tomorow.
  21. Hi Summer laid an egg off the perch on the 14th of september then laid another on the 16th in the nest box. She did not lay one yesterday or today though, She is incubating all day I'm just wondering if she has stopped? Maybe she only wants 2 babies. It does not bother me either way I am just wondering if some budgies accidently skip a day or was this intentional. They usually lay every second day if im correct.. she laid on the 14th then the 16th then she skipped the 18th and did not lay today (19th) either. Thanks very much. P.S If you want me to stop asking all these questions please tell me.
  22. Thank you very much KAZ How long should I leave them in the cage before adding the nest box? Also, One of my hens cere was dark brown and crusty yesterday, now today it is light brown and with a few dark patches. It is as if she has shed her cere. Does that mean she is coming into condition or going out of? I have a feeling it means she is going out of condition so I did not add her to the cage. I need to make sure. Yet another question, if you do not know the mutations of the parents, is their a visual way to tell if a budgie is split for a mutation? Thank you very much all. Update: Summer is now sitting on 3 eggs and is incubating. I am looking to buy an egg incubator for the quails.. they sit on them till the chicks are almost ready to hatch then they move the eggs around the place and ditch them... I do not know why all I do know is that I need an incubator.
  23. Hi I have another question if that is okay... I have 2 pairs in the avairy that I want to put into breeding cabinets. should I put them both in the cabinets now or should I put the female in first for 24 hours? Or maybe put both males in the same cage and both females in another and leave the cages together? What should I do? Thanks very much
  24. Hi all. Grunt's eggs are 19 days old and definitly 100% infertile... Clear as a crystal. Should I take the eggs out and put them back in the avairy for a rest? How long should I wait before putting them back in the breeding cage (I want them to rest as long as they need to) Grunt did not incubate over night. Do you think next clutch she will realise her mistakes and start incubating more? She stopped incubating them after a few days. She is a first time hen so I am hoping she was just inexperienced Update: Summer has now laid 2 eggs. Thanks
