  1. Hi I put some bird seen in a pot of dirt a week ago and now it has sprouted and grown. Can I feed it to budgies? Here is a picture. Do I let it grow longer or do I feed it to them now? If I let it grow for a while, will it turn into millet or what will it look like? Is it healthier for the birds now or when it grows alot bigger.. Thanks
  2. Thanks very much. I will try the paper idea. My pairs were bonded in the avairy that is why I put them in cages, they were not seperated. I have seen them all mating and preening eachother all the time. They are in good health and as far as I know they are in breeding condition... Here are updated pics of them and maybe you could tell me if they are in breeding condition or not..
  3. Hi. I have 3 female quails and they are fine. My floor is cemented but in the corner I have wood shavings, dirt and grass for them. My quails make more mess than they clean, They scratch around like chooks and everything goes everywhere.
  4. Thanks very much **liv** I thought the covering the nest box hole idea was for budgies who use the nesting box. I will give that a go. I am sorry, I thought lettuce was the toxic vegetable and not cabbage. Will it kill my birds instantly or does it take a while to kill them? The last time I fed it to them was last monday, None of them have died.. Do you think it will kill any? Should I take them all to the vet? Is their a treatment for it.. Thanks very much.
  5. Hi Please do not think I am over-anxious when it comes to breeding budgies, I just want to know what I am doing wrong so I can fix it.. Question: Sunny+bull and Grunt+sumo and lemon+lime have been in the breeding cages for 4 weeks now. Sunny uses the nesting box but only when I walk past, I think she is scared and flys in their for safety. Grunt or sumo have never been in the box and neither have lemon or lime. What would a show breeder do in my position? Would you remove all pairs to the avairy then in 1 weeks time switch them around and put them back in the breeding boxes? Orjust leave them in their as they are all extremley bonded with eachother? I am honestly not sure, I must be doing somthing wrong and I am hoping I can find out what it is so I can fix it. The breeding cages are under an awning that gets full lighting all day and full darkness at night. No one ever walks past the area except for me and that is once or twice each day. I try my hardest not to disturb them. This is their weekly diet: Sundays: corn on the cob, vitamins in water monday: brocoli/cabbage/spinach, normal water tuesday: grapes/carrot/apple, apple cidar vinegar in water Wednesday: corn on the cob, calcivet in water thursday: brocolli/cabbage/spinach, vitamin in water friday: corn on the cob, calcivet in water saturday: random vegetable I can find in the fridge, normal water. They also get seed mixed by a show breeding friend of mine. They get cuttlebone, iodine/calcium blocks. What would you do if you were in my position, what am I doing wrong. Thanks for your time and I understand if you do not want to read it all, I wrote alot
  6. Thanks very much kaz. Update: My 2 cockatiels have already laid 4 eggs. They seem so much easier to breed than budgies, 1 day after I put them in a breeding cage they started laying. My budgies have been in their for 3-4 weeks now but 2 pairs havent even used the nesting box. They are bonded so I will keep them in their. What are the chances of 4 different pairs of budgies not laying within 4 weeks.
  7. Hi Does anyone know what type of bird summer is? I downloaded a record keeping program for budgies and I need to know exactly what her mutation is. I think she is a dark green spangle or maybe grey green I'm not to sure. Can the white/silver cheek patches on her head tell you what mutation she is? Also, does it look like she has scaly face or is that just an in condition cere? Thanks very much
  8. Hi. I have 1 square piece of dowel and 1 round piece on the breeding cages, the square piece is to help with budgies mating. Then in the avairy I have alot of gum treet branches, leave the bark and the leaves on as the birds will eat it and it is good for them.
  9. Hi. When I sprout seeds I put them in a jar with a stocking over the top. Then tip the jar upside down so all the seed falls into the stocking. Then you just rinse the stocking with water every few hours till the seed has sprouted. Then mix some apple cider vinegar in with the water and rinse the seed again. Then it is fine for the birds to eat, apple cidar vinegar is good for budgies.
  10. Thanks very much for all the replies. Could someone tell me the mutation of summer please. I think she is dark green or olive green spangle. Wings: Cere: Does it look like summer has scaly face to you? I have iverctmin to treet it.

  12. okay. I will see what I can find. Thanks very much
  13. Hi, thanks for the help Sumo trys to mate with grunt but grunt walks away and then sumo goes to mate with the perch. I will try get a video tomorow.. They are both veery close and are always preening eachother but maybe they are not meant to be parents.. Does anybody know if cheese is good for budgies? It would be a good source of calcium..

I use tap water and It is fine, I doubt the chlorine levels in the water is enough to kill a budgie.
  15. Hello. You have some very nice budgies. I agree with the others when they say they look to young. None of them are showing white iris rings. Good luck with everything.
  16. Hi Update: Sunny has laid an egg and grunt has laid 2 now. Off topic: I put my only pair of cockatiels in an aviary by themselves and the female laid an egg the next day. Off topic Question: Does anybody know if budgie leg rings can be used on cockatiels?
  17. Hello Good news. I took bluey to the vet this afternoon and thankfully he does not have psittacosis or a respitory infection. The vet tested his droppings and checked his breathing and he is fine. The only thing that needs fixing is that he is a little to fat, A little excersise will fix this. He has not been getting excersise because one of his flight feathers was broken so he couldnt fly very well, The fet has fixed this and now he flys better. The causes for the brown stain could either be: 1. A vitamin A deficiancy, the vet gave me a medication to treat this. 2. He seems to think that bluey has been through a moult and after a moult budgies can sometimes get that stain above their ceres. I did not notice bluey going through a moult though. P.S juggernaut is doing better now aswell. Thanks very much for all the help.
  18. Liv, Is this the avi-cal you use and is it a good price to pay for it? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Avi-Cal-125ml-Calci...Q2em118Q2el1247 Thanks, I am a member of vetafarm but calcivet their is $18 for a 100 ml bottle and AVI-CAL on ebay is $9.25 for 125 ML. Thanks
  19. I went to the petshop for calcivet for the breeding birds, not for a cure to blueys respitory problem. I am taking him to the vet this afternoon... I was checking if the other items on ebay were okay here before I went and bought them, As I was adviced they were not okay, I did not buy them. Sorry.
  20. okay thanks very much. So I would give them the vitamin and mineral supplement 2 times a week and I will buy some avi-cal for them. CAn the vitamin and mineral supplement be fed to breeding budgies?
  21. Hello Sorry to bother you all again.. I bought a vitamin and minderal supplement today and I want to see if anyone has used it and liked it. It is called VITAMIN & MINERAL SUPPLEMENT, The brand is called SCIENCE PRODUCTs, The avian specialist brand. The supplement contains: Vitamin A Cholecalciferol Dl-Alpha-Tocopherly acelate (vit E) Nicotinamide Calcium Pantothenate Riboflavin Cyanocobalamin Pyridoxine hydrochloride Asorbic Acid Folic acid0 Citric acid Magnesium suplhate Zinc sulphate Ferrous sulphate Copper sulphate Sodium molybdate Cobalt chloride silica I went to the pet shop and asked for calcivet (A calcium supplement for birds) and they gave me this instead. Does this do the same thing as calcivet? Thanks
  22. One of my budgies has a brown stain above his cere and that means a respiratory infection.( He is in his own cage) He still sings and eats its just that stain. I was just seeing if that specific medicine could treat him, I will just go to the vet again. Thanks
  23. So grass that is growing and green that hasnt been mowed in a month is still deadly? I will have to grow my own then. Yet another question... I have been looking at a few bird suppliers and I found this: OXY-B soluble broad spectrum antibiotic powder. It is a treatment for treatment for chronic respiratory disease in birds. Has anyone ever heard/used this in their budgies? I want to buy it but I am just making sure its okay.
  24. Thanks for the replies. Is fresh grass okay that hasnt been mowed in over a month okay? If not I will have to grow my own grass as I mow all the grass on the land. I will look into the doxycycline further. I read that it fixed respitory problems and one of my budgies has one. If I cant use the doxycycline I will take him to the vet again. I have taken 3 birds to the vet this week.. The vet will probably think I am mistreating the birds.
  25. Thanks very much for the replies. Is just normal growing green grass that hasnt been sprayed good for them? or are you talking about the grass that you grow from bird seed. I have read that doxycyline is a treatment for a budgie disease but I forget which disease it was. I think it was psitacosis or respitory problem's. I know you can get doxycycline for humans at any chemist, is this the same drug that is used for budgies?
