Pearce's Budgerigar Blog
I doubt I will ever show my birds I just have them for personal enjoyment. All I really need is a ring with a number on it so I can write the number and the birds name and type in a book. I will check some stores tomorow. THanks very much

Hello all Thanks very much for all the nice replies. Is their any way I can get budgie identification rings without joining a budgie club? I have called and emailed 3 budgie clubs and have not received a single reply, it was one week ago. Thanks

Pearce's Budgerigar Blog
Hello all I am going to post my budgie pairs that I am going to put in breeding cages and I will update when eggs/babies come. Pair 1 Grunt Sumo These 2 have bonded together very well. Im taking a guess and saying sumo is a cobalt normal and grunt is a grey normal. Pair 2 Lemon Lime Im going to guess that lime is a light green normal and that lemon is a light green spangle? Or yellowface... Also, is lime moulting? I can see pin feathers sticking out at the top of his head, if he is molting I will not put a nesting box in their. Pair 3: Blooper and muggs. I am guessing that blooper (female) is a light green spangle.. and that muggs is a light green opaline. I couldnt getvery good pictures with this pair because they are extremley flighty and even if I walk past both of them fly straight into the nesting box. I added the nesting box in with this pair 5 days ago so I guess I will wait and see. Blooper and muggs added on friday the 1st of August Nesting box added to blooper and muggs breeding cage on the 4th of August. Lime and Lemon added on the 4th of August. Grunt and sumo added on the 1st of august. Nesting box will hopefully be added tomorow or Monday. Thanks for viewing.

More Breeding Questions.
Hello all. I have another question if you dont mind. Does anyone know how to tell the gender of a king quail? I heard it was the white line under their head but im not sure. One of my quails is always biting the other quails necks so I have moved him until i figure out what he is doing. All my quails except for him have bald spots on their necks and heads. Is it a mating thing or is he being territorial. I have 6 quails and all but one have the white line under their head, including the biter. Maybe he is fighting for the quail without the white line (female?) If this is true I will have to buy more females. Thanks for your help

My Avairy
Kaz, Its wire netting and you can buy it from any hardware store. The smaller the holes the better, but if you cant get any smaller than what I have, just double it up and fold it abit more. This is what it looks like when folded up. Have the sharp edges to the outside of the avairy.

My Avairy
Some of the pictures did not work for some reason So I am posting them again. ^ The budgie is called freckles. The grey cockatiel is called beast and the pearl is called beauty. ^The budgie on the left is jekkyl and the budgie on the right is hyde. ^This is jonny, as you can see he is camera shy. ^ Right rear of the avairy. ^ This is bluey, My biggest budgie. He has a respitory problem and is now in a smaller cage to be treated.

My Avairy
thanks. The quails are in those nests alot but I have had no eggs as of yet. The holes where the roof joins the side are filled with steel mesh from the outside. You just scrunch it into a little ball and it fits right in. I didnt put it on the inside as it could hurt the birds. Thanks for the comments

My Avairy
Hello I am going to post some pictures of my avairy to let everyone have a look. I have 3 avairys at the moment, 1 is about 10 meters long by 5 meters wide by 2 meters high (It has no birds in it because it is full of mice, Im in the process of mice proofing it. The other one is a little smaller than the above and it is full of mice aswell. The avairy I am showing you today is alot smaller, but alot better. When alot of my birds died a few months ago I moved the survivors into a cage and began turning my garden shed into a rat proof avairy. It is a very old shed as you can see by all the dints in it, its been hit by hail countless times. I've almost finished fixing some of the small gaps then it will be set. I put the birds in their a few weeks ago as the cage they were in was way to small. Their is alot of junk around it which im in the process of cleaning up so dont mind that. Here it is. ^The gaps at the bottom you can see their have been cemented now. ^ front right hand side of the avairy. ^quails nests I also have another 10 budgies in the breeding cages and I will take pictures of them later. Most of the budgies in the avairy are australian except for bluey and jonny. THanks for viewing. Enjoy

More Breeding Questions.
Hello all Sorry if this sounds stupid but I had to ask. When budgies colony breed, the younger budgies would learn from the elderly budgies how to sit on eggs and care for young right? When selective breeding how will the offspring know how to care for budgies and sit on eggs when their time for breeding comes? Does the mother teach them or does it just come naturally to all birds. Sorry if I sound stupid but I was thinking that is why some hens smash eggs and dont incubate properly.

Thanks very much Kaz. I meant When I walk past them to get to the other budgies and to feed them etc.. I only go past twice a day. Even if I moved them I'd still have to feed them anyway. I am going to the qld budgie council site at the moment I will keep you posted. THanks very much everyone.

More Breeding Questions.
Is it normal for the male to be in the nesting box with the female? The pair has been in the breeding cage for 3 days but they have bonded for months in the avairy (thats why I pulled them out of the avairy, they were close). When ever I walk past the cage both the male and female flutter about and fly straight into the nesting box, Its like they are both very scared and fleeing to the box. Both budgies are not tame. If the female lays eggs and I walk past and scare them, They will fly straight into the nest box and probably break all the eggs. Maybe they are just to scared to breed? The female is also chewing the nesting box to pieces. I see her sitting on the top chewing at the lid of the box. THanks

More Breeding Questions.
Hello all. As most of you know, I have just started to do select breeding instead of colony breeding. I have asked alot of questions and I understand if anyone is annoyed. I have learnt alot from this forum. Questions.. 1. I read somewhere that when selective breeding, budgies should be given atleast 10 hours of light per day. Does that mean they need to be getting uv light or just filtered light. Because I can put them out in the sun for the day but that would get quite hot? 2. I put a pair of budgies in a breeder cage yesterday, 1 male 1 female. Both over and a half old. All they seem to do is try to get out of the cage. They are quite tame and will actually sit on your finger for a while. Is this a sign that they do not want to be together and or mate? the male usualy runs around the floor of the cage for hours and the female flys from perch to perch constantly. Is this some kind of mating ritual or do they not like eachother? 3.Where can I get the rings that you fit onto a budgies leg to tell when it was born. I have been to every pet shop in my area and not one of them sell them. Also, how much do they cost for a pack of like 100? 4. Their used to be some programs that you could record budgie birth dates and mutations and keep records for birds. Does anyone know of any free versions of these? Thanks very much for all your help

What will a get
Hello all I pulled 2 of my budgies out of the avairy and im going to put them in the breeder cage. I would like your thoughts on what chicks they will produce and what type of budgie they are. THis is grunt. I am guessing she is a mauve with normal wings. But im not sure. She has white iris rings and hatched out of the egg in january 07. http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/7659/p1010023ea9.jpg This is sumo. I am guessing he is a cobalt with normal wings. He has white iris rings and hatched on the 3rd of feburary 2007. Here is sumo http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/7066/p1010026sm8.jpg This is a photo of both budgies wings http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8994/p1010027ba3.jpg Thanks for your time

Breeding Cages
Hello all. I Have one more question I need to ask if that is okay. Is a 60 cm high by 150 cm long by 30 cm wide a big enough breeding cage? I have a book case at home that I could turn into a double breeding cage but Im just a little bit worried about the width. The nesting boxes would be on the outside. If it is to small I will have to try and extend it. THanks for your help
