Male Or Female?
The cere doesn't start to go blue or brown until they are about 3-6 months old. Generally when they are babies smooth pink means boy, purply white with white rings around the nostrils usually mean girl. Girls can also be a light tan colour as well.

Trimming Vent Feathers?
Plucking is painful for the bird. It also has the added disadvantage of the fact that the feathers around the vent will grow back quite quickly. If you clip them instead, they stay clipped for ages, because according to the bird, there is still a feather there, even if half of it is missing

Covering Cages
I don't cover my cages. My birds are fine with out it. I hardly ever get night frights either(only ever had 2), probably because of the light coming in from the window.

Is Lucerne/alfalfa Hay Ok For Budgies?
I have these little bricks of hay (little hardened bales). It is lucerne (alfalfa) hay and I feed them to my chinchilla who loves them as they are compressed and very hard. I was wondering if these are okay for budgies. Will it be okay for their tummies? I thought I could hang a brick of it in their cage as it would be a good source of extra nutrition and nibbling oppertunities if it is okay. :feedbirds:

How Do You Stop The Pair Breeding After The 2nd Clutch?
When I breed my budgies I am planning to only have 2 clutches for the one girl. I was wondering what I should do to prevent the pair from starting a third clutch while they raise the second. I read somewhere that you should take the hen away from the babies when the youngest is 10 days old and leave the father in and the father is supposed to start feeding the babies by him self. This doesn't seem like a particularly safe method to me, cause the father may not realise that he has to feed them What do you do and what do you think is the best way to prevent them from having a third clutch. Thanks for you help :)

Breeding Cages And Flight Cages For Newly Weaned Babies
okay I have a cage that is 80cm (31") long by 48cm (19") high by 48cm deep. My other cage is about 69cm (27") high by 50cm (20") wide by 30cm (12") deep. I read that when you breed your babies you should put them in a cage away from all adults so that they don't have any competition etc. I have my big main cage 165cm (69") high by 89cm (35") wide by 89cm deep and when I breed the babies there will only be two other budgies in there. Should I put the babies into a seperate cage entirely, (one of the others listed above) or put them into that cage with the other adults straight after weaning? Which cage should I use for breeding and which cage should I put the babies into after they have been separated from their parents? Thanks for your help

What Shavings To Use In Nest Box?
Because pine is a soft wood, it lets of vapours thta are bad for the babies. So it is suggested that you air you pine shavings for a few days. But I was wondering how do you do that? and wouldn't they get all germy in the time that they are exposed? Also are Aspen shavings okay? because they are a hardwood (so I have heard) and do not give off any vapours so are safe to use straight from the pack. And how deep should your shavings be?

How Is This Cage?
Careful with zip ties, they can have zinc in them which is poisonous to birds. They are slide up down doors, you shouldn't need latches for those and if you budgie does figure out how to open them (mine never did in the 6 years that I have used my cage) use clothes pegs to hold them shut.
