Babies babies babies!

Some pics of a few babies just starting to fledge.

A very exciting Normal Cobalt from a grey opaline spangle cock x normal grey hen. A nice surprise from 2 grey birds (yay) also hoping for a corker as father is from a Nats winner and has bred some beauties before and mother is a relative. He already has good size about him and good looking amount of feather judging by the pins.

babies2-10-09015.jpg

A nice sized white lacewing chick from the old white lacewing boy - they have chicks spread throughout lots of different nests and have laid again with good fertility. You can tell it's lacewing v's ino by the 2 cinnamon tail feathers appearing as the chick fledges.

babies2-10-09022.jpg

babies2-10-09023.jpg

An OMG (sized) blackeyed self, looking to have great colour and it's huge. From the one blackeyed self pair that I ended up putting down. The hen is just amazing for this variety and passes on her size and quality. Does not look like it will be too suffused either.

babies2-10-09021.jpg

A mottley bunch. All in the same nest as the cobalt chick. The foster parents had an infertile round so thay may as well be of some use and raise this lot. One olive clearwing on the far left with horror markings - from a very strongly marked violet outcross (I'm hoping he makes up for it with size!). A beautifully coloured lacewing from the parents of my 3rd place nats boy (on the right) and an cinnamon olive spangle (top).

Thanks RIP!

Up to 41 rings on now and heaps of little babies still for rings so going off like a frog in a sock indeed!!!!

The couple of infertile rounds have been firmly made up by 2 of my old boys (who I thought might be over the hill) firing and producing stacks of fertile eggs. Also a couple of surprises like a cock bird that I didn't realize was a brother to Nats 3rd place boy, down to a super cin opaline who went to nats as 3rd bird having a great round. Actually very pleased with the results so far and even the cold manky snaps of weather haven't knocked them around as much as expected.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the chicks mature - this is the best bit about breeding exhibition budgies in my opinion.

yes watching the little ones grow into their feather

best part

waiting for the first sign of color (unless you know what outcome will be )

and seeing each little personality grow with them :rip:

okay some more updates from the G&G Stud.

I had a big "AWWWWW NUTS" session this morning when I realized that the 2 fallow chicks that I have so far bred are cinnamon fallows, one of which is in a nest also containing lacewings. If anyone else has ever bred cinnamon fallows you will know that telling them apart from lacewings is pretty darn difficult. I'm hoping the quality differences between my lacewings and my fallows will help in this case.

One of these is the cinnamon fallow ........ sigh.

babies6-10-09018.jpg

The little cobalt cock bird is looking nicer and nicer. Has the size and feather that might make him a bit of a stand out later (fingers crossed). He was a bit unhappy about being held!!!

babies6-10-09001.jpg

babies6-10-09004.jpg

My first ever Dom Pieds just fledging. I've never bred pieds before and wasn't intending to start in any real way but I bought a dilute dom pied hen to use in my clearwings and she is so nice I put her to a normal green cock first, so I've obviously got a couple of pieds showing up. Still kind exciting for me coz pied is not something I'm used to seeing in the nest.

babies6-10-09008.jpg

Maybe a bit early to really tell yet but this little clearwing is looking promising as far as wing markings goes.

babies6-10-09012.jpg

The mighty mighty blackeye. This bird is huge for the variety and will be up there in size with my normals. Colour is fab too with little suffusion...... maybe it'll be a representative at the Nats???? Big fingies crossed.

babies6-10-09024.jpg

These 2 chickies are from 2 very nice birds. Brother to one of my lacewing Nats boys with ahen that was selected as third bird this year. 3 chickies so far with a great looking cin op grey and the white lacewing from the previous post just a bit more mature and showing really nice markings.

babies6-10-09022.jpg

babies6-10-09025.jpg

These are the parents of the 2 chicks above.

babies6-10-09032.jpg

babies6-10-09034.jpg

A bit hard to pick up on the photo but if you look carefully at the head feathering of this little guy you will see a real feather disturbance near to the cere. This is the second baby lacewing to show up this way (and no I don't have feather faults...... I mean crested budgies) so i'm wondering what this is exactly. This is the younger of the 2 and the second on as the feather is growing out, looks less noticable but still there. I will continue to show some photos as they grow.

Check my breeding thread nubbly, i had a chick with the exact same feather twist except she had two - one either side of each nostril. Tell me what you think. I can already see her feather structure is different, i should get an updated picture. Cant wait to see her after her adult moult.

Oh and FAB birds :)

Beautiful birds!!! Ahh fallows, I'm so jealous! :) We had a mass aviary break out and lost all my fallows aside one split hen and one older cock :)!!! After my wedding I'll be buying back into them, so if you have any fallow culls let me know :)

Here are mine:

Chick 4: The interesting one! There is good news and bad news. 'Good news' is that the directional feather on this one is really odd (good news to me lol). Has anyone seen this before? Does it grow out? Or do you think it may be some sort of crestbred or crest forming? Have a look -

I got no comments on this regarding what people thought. I would have loved to have heard if they thought it was crested, if anyone had bred similar etc. Glad to see your post now its so similar so im curious to see how they turn out :)

I enjoy reading your thread too, nubbly. Not a breeder at all, but it helps me to appreciate all the time and knowledge a breeder must have, to even stay afloat!

Thanks guys. I'm pleased that you like reading the thread - it makes up for all the horrible issues that goes with Photobucket (I call it Spewbucket!!!).

Dean - I remember your post and at the time had seen nothing at all like it before (just what Kaz said, don't know so don't comment) other than what people talk about seeing with crest bred birds. I would love to see some more photos as your bird grows as the feather disturbance looks way more pronounced than in my birds.

For me I would be really surprised if it has anything to do with crests as I have never ever had any and I would not expect my birds to have anything like crest genes anywhere near them but the fact that there have been 2 like this from the same breeding for me suggests more than just a fluke. I would bet though that my lacewing babies will end up with little to no evidence of this one feathered - time will tell.
