giving grit to one bird that does not breed fair enough but i actually think a breeding hen uses the grit to get the different textures fed to the different aged chicks
  2. hath replied to a post in a topic in Budgie Talk
mine have access to grit 24/7 and i have never had any problems, but some budgies can go over the top with it

    one pair per cage
  4. there should be no problem changing them ensure that the original pair are seperated for at least two weeks it would be better if they could be seperated so they can not hear each other aswell

take him the hen should be fine and if it gets worse the hen will have to feed them and you want to make sure it cant be passed on to the chicks

i would say its not unusual but its not really commen either but if you have a hen that eats here eggs it is very difficult to stop her and myself would not try to breed her

i agree that splay legs is due to calcium deficiency but i do put 3 inches od dood shavings in the nest box some hens do empty this out but most dont this tends to keep the eggs warmer if the hen is scared of the nest for some time and also keeps the nest cleaner and dryer

first of all 12 months minimum the hens cere should be a light brown not dark brown as this is getting towards the end of the cycle cocks cere blue deep blue they should be full of life the hen should be chewing every thing the cock going from one perch to another as devvle said if these are related then dont there is nothing to gain at all doing this with pet birds

no problem and welcome to the boards

i believe that feather plucking is bordem if you put some millet or a piece of soft wood in the box for the hen to chew this often stops the problem

is this in a flight or cage if it is a cage there should be no problem as for a flight you would have to get the nst box in pretty much the same spot, how big was the first nest box

yes you have done the right thing as for why possibly want to start to breed to soon and where attempting to remove the chicks as they were good parents try them again ensuring that you have foster parents ready to take any chicks if it happens again and if it does then i wouldnt breed them again as they can get in the habbit of doing this

i to am going to stop here although pixie and myself have had a good discussion (sorry for the head ache),i introduced the word disabled instead of clip to evoke a responce i am now regretting it slightly this was not aimed at pixie personally but was unfortunatly she who responded i just wanted to add a differrent aspect. so once again pixie i appologise for putting the bait there for someone to take nothing was aimed at you personally. but for the record what i said i do mean i am open minded so please keep trying to change my mind you never know it might happen. some of the posts are now getting a little heated so please step back take a breath myself and rainbow dont really want to delete posts i did consider closing this thread but thought better as i have a feelling i fuelled the fires a little so i appologise to everyone and i think ill stick to yea or nea answers from now on a read everyone elses posts

if you stop any animal doing somthing natural and i mean doing it 100%no matter what it is then you are disabling it You have not stopped a wing, claw, or leg from working by trimming the wings. it is very hard to prove something to someone if they dont want it to be proved
  21. hath replied to a post in a topic in Health Questions and Tips
i would not say it is a strong point if someone came along and could prove to me it is the best way then i could easily change my mind but as of yet no arguments for it have done so
  22. i go along with this it could get a taste for this

it is a form of disabling you stop a bird from doing something to its full extent to cause someone to have an illness, injury or condition that makes it difficult for them to do the things that other people do: to stop something such as (part of) a machine, system or weapon from working two quotes from cambridge dictionaries replace the words to cause a bird to have an illness, injury or condition that makes it difficult for them to do the things that other birds do to stop something such as (part of) a wing, leg or claw from working is it me that offends or the word disable no where did i say you were cruel look at previous post and i stated that maybe it was me as i dont hand tame so have no need to trim the wings, you said you dont disable your birds wings on perpose but you do trim there wings on perpose (there is no diference to the outcome just the wording)i delibritally used the word disabled because i knew it would evoke a responce sorry it had to come from you
  24. hath replied to a post in a topic in Health Questions and Tips
you do clip your birds wings to purposely disable it,that is the whole point of doing it,if it didnt disable it then it would free fly,and then not be any use as a safetey precaution as you say you use it
  25. hath replied to a post in a topic in Health Questions and Tips
can they fly the same as a bird that is not clipped ie the same distance the same degree of lift ect if not then it has been disabled all be it temperally
