Any chance of a picture of "sick" chick Simon? It may help sort out it's problem , if you have 5 and it's the youngest it could be 10 days or so behind others try a picture if possible.
  2. Thank's again Nubbly, sorry to be a pest but, if I wanted to try for more opaline (His two were very nice) I would use the cock bird not the hen? Hope I got it and would the opaline chicks from this clutch be hens? If I bred them with normals and got opaline they would be cock's? or am I still totally lost. :WobbleSign:
  3. Sorry you had bad season, after all the preparation, anticipation etc. I only bred this year for first time. I had 5 cages have 27 chicks, only lost one live had a few dead in shell to first time Mum. Otherwise good. Maybe weather was a factor if Renee (perth) and Adelaide had "funny" weather? I'm mid north coast nsw. It was hot, cold, and in between here I only had one round to see how I went. Anyway better luck with next season maybe others may be more help. :WobbleSign:
  4. Thank's for reply Nubbly5, I just re checked post and found your reply. SO I'm posting pics of this pairing's chicks for you. WE LOST CHICK NO 3 MAYBE IT WAS GREEN? NO 1 NO 2 NO'S 1&4ON WIRE NO 5 NO 6 NO 7 NO8 The answer's under (INFO FROM NUBBLY5) was your reply to my post because I didn't know what to expect from this pair. Way back, I kept it for future ref and copied & pasted it. Well this is what we got and I wanted to know which of your answers would apply to the parent's? Because I am still baffled by it all. L.O.L. hope this doesn't confuse it further.

Hi Folks, this is still double dutch to me!! If I understand Dean, thanks very much Dean, it's not a problem to the bird only in a show situation? I thought colours were confusing but this is just as!! I suppose it comes under genetics, but will chicks still function as normal? With flying etc or because wing feathers are so "loose and big" can it effect the, "aerodynamics" I suppose, of the bird. Is diet a factor in growing bigger feathers etc. They are still on the ground, to heavy or unable to fly, I don't know. No 3 fly's about a foot or two up in the air, they have only been out of cage two days so it might take a while for muscles to strengthen enough to take off. Can I help by doing anything more or wait and see? Thank's everyone for their replies, worse than rearing kids this is................

Thank's R.I.P. Could this problem be bred out, if I decided to breed chick's, by putting them with smaller unrelated birds? What is the outcome for these chicks, just birds with long feathers or could they have other problems, flight or dietary etc.? Can anyone advise?
  7. robyn replied to robyn's post in a topic in Breeders Discussion
Thank's Splat, I suppose I could put either bird with a smaller pet type and see what happens, keeping in mind either one could be the carrier. I'll wait until chicks mature a bit to see how they turn out. Guessing game either way isn't it.

Thank's everyone I thought it was a bit odd but didn't know enough about show stock birds to know if it was normal. R.I.P. said to tell if feathers stop growing? Is this a possibility, that they just keep growing? And is there any way to tell which parent has the "gene" if it's not sex related/or genetic. I don't show, but don't want to introduce any problems down the track so should I breed from this pair again or just not together?

Hi All, my last batch of chicks are out of cage now. Am posting pics. BUT my query is are chicks 3 & 4 normal? in regards to feathers. They seem to be all feather no 3 is having a job getting off the ground, no 4 just out of cage hasn't even tried yet. These are my only "show type" pair. Rest were pet to show or pet to pet type. If this is a factor. No 1 picture is Dad, looking a bit worse for wear. Mum No 1. front and back No 2 front and back. seem okay. No 3 front and back. No 4 front and back (out of cage to-day) any thoughts gratefully received. I did read about cinnamon having larger feathers I think. Maybe that's why?

Hope your birds all recover Splat. As to night time bringing cats in, day time is just as bad, a neighbour's cat has repeatedly been raiding little honey eaters nests in bushes and also caught munching on the remains of a wagtail. During the day. I know it's natural for a cat to hunt but awful to watch when you can't save the victims in time.

Totally agree, have you ever gardened with bare hands after a visit from your neighbourhood moggie? Nearly stopped dropping my aviary "blind" down at night but decided against it because of this. Let alone the wildlife these pests kill.

Very pretty bird and the kids aren't half bad either.

Good on you Splat, but maybe you had better not make a habit of it. l.o.l. Any news on your pied's egg?
  14. Wow G.B. thought you had lost your little one you were so excited about!!. Great it was only the camera. Good luck with the outcome. It does my head in as to how you can tell all this stuff when they are just hatched, but I guess I'll pick it up bit by bit.
  15. Thank you Neville, I was surprised that he is split, opaline and carrying violet. Need to be an expert I guess but a great help when trying to understand it all.

    Whatever gets the job done!
  17. Hi, sometime ago I asked what I would get from these two. ( info from nubbly5) Maybe Nubbly5 could assist a novice again, or anyone who can help? Bottom is a clearwing dark green. It could be split blue and/or slpit dilute. okay if it's straight clearwing dk green - paired to a normal blue you would get: 100% normal greens, split blue, split clearwing. If it's split blue you could get: 50% chance normal green, split for blue, split for clearwing; 50% blue split for clearwing. If it's split for blue AND dilute you could get: 50% chance normals split for clearwing. 50% chance normals split for dilute. which have 50% chance being green split for blue and 50% blue. Well, we ended up with 3 normal green, 1 died could have been green. 2 opaline,+ 2 normal Cobalt/Violet, I'm not up with mutations. Can anyone tell me which of the above would be correct. I am guessing the "red" option, but who has opaline gene? none have clearwings. P.S. pics of chicks are on my post, My Breeding results for 2009, from cage No 1.
  18. Interesting to follow this Renee, glad you ended up with A1 result this time.

Gee! if I'd known this I could have saved myself a lot of scraping to get rid of the stuff.Well we live and learn. l.o.l

Sorry about you pied Splat, but if his mate hatches her eggs, at least you haven't lost everything maybe he'll throw a nice bub to replace him. Cheer up there's got to be better times ahead!!!.
  21. robyn replied to Amy S's post in a topic in Budgie Pictures
Hi Amy, Welcome, you will certainly be able to find out anything to do with Budgies here. Great site and very knowledgeable people to help you through any problem.
  22. Thank's Dave and Kaz, I've got the Greywing bit sorted (for to-day anyway). Haven't looked at the clearwing yet,nor the clear flight, lace wing etc, etc. Boy this genetic thing is complicated. Still trying to work out how I ended up with my assortment for this year.
  23. Settle down "children". If the eggs are ten days over the first eggs due date, then they are probably all clear or d.i.shell? BUT This was my first year breeding, I had one pair with 5 clear first round. Took both out of cage for about a week or so, they were still bonded etc in aviary so I tried again, she laid 9 I waited and waited, Thought here we go again. I candled eggs and thought 4 still looked okay. took clear eggs, left the four. and they hatched, must have been last four of clutch. So don't give up, as Kaz said toss this lot. Maybe she'll lay again or take them out from nest box and try again in a week or so if they're still a "couple". Good Luck.
  24. I think I've got it so it's the "inside" colour of the feather not the edge.
  25. Thank's Dave, So if any colour has that grey edge to it's feathers it's a greywing/whatever?
