Great news Gina, if it's out and Dad still on the job nothing to worry about, they get very inquisitive early, I've got three popping in and out from box into cage but they sneak back in for security, I suppose. Good luck with the rest, you know what to expect now.

Big improvement in chicks Kaz. Would they normally recover fully or could it leave plumage damage?

Hi All, Does anyone know if there is any harm in cuttle fish getting wet (as in rain). I have some in flight, we have had showers over last two days. Could birds get any "bugs" of it, if it's wet for a day or so before it dries out in sun? Its hanging not on ground.
  4. Great that Mum is still feeding, that's one less hurdle. Try Kaz's above the knee but mine kept slipping down so did ankles instead of doing it too tightly. The idea is to align hip joints into right position before bones calcify so whatever works has got to be better than doing nothing. Keep posting to see how you go.
  5. Hi Jen, looks pretty good. I know its a bit difficult, but mine stood up better with p.cl. it kept lying on it's side with make-p sponge. I think mine took a couple of weeks but as yours is so young it may be less, leave it a few days before checking. It's sort of trial and error. The pipe cleaners are soft on it's skin as long as it's not overtight or rubbing . Another suggestion was a drop of liquid calcium to the beak each day, as it could be lack of calcium, or, as in my case slippery insert in box. I think the calcium was for about a week 10 days. About 1/2 inch between legs was about right. Just keep check Mum is still feeding it. BUT, looking pretty good from pics. Keep us posted and good luck. :rip:
  6. Jen if you go to HEALTH QUESTIONS AND TIPS you will find a pinned article about splayed legs by Kaz. Very great help. I followed this and fixed badly splayed leg chick. I also used pipe cleaners on another with good results. Placed pipe cleaner gently around ANKLE AREA. Hope this helps, the quicker you do it, the better result. I can't help with other advice but I'm sure others can. I wondered if wings on this little one looked quite right? Maybe just picture. good luck and hope this helps a bit. P.S. I left mine in box with others, parents continued to rear them, apparently you can sometimes have parents reject them but if you keep check you would soon know if they are feeding it. Check crop etc. :rip:

im sorry but i find it hard to belive your giving advice when you are not even looking after or know whats going on with your own birds and asked for advice on what to do to start breeding ??? i think you should just go learn more sorry if im out of tune but i been reading your stuff and please work your birds out first then help others please gina listen to kaz mate :rip: I had one fall from a shelf at 4 weeks (uninjured) but it could flutter around, I put it back in box and out it came again. I had spare cage by this and moved whole family into that. If you can't cage them check to see others aren't attacking it on the floor and parents are coming down to feed it or watch to see if it can feed by itself. The others will most likely do the same thing. It will need access to food and water, shallow dish only. Good luck. p.s. Definitely follow Kaz's adv. if its not feathered.

    Any news yet Jen?

Agreed....and even better is how rare it is to ever actually observe this....puts a huge smile on your face I agree Kaz heard this a few days ago myself, even a bit later you can hear chick pecking to get out. Big thrill.
  11. Congrats Neville, lovely Bird and garden.

Thank's Kaz, I read about lacking iodine. They have iodine bells in aviary but don't know if he has had it. In the water they would all get it, could they get too much with both? Bird is good to-day no sign of squeak now and alert etc. don't know how long to isolate him if he's improved now. thanks again for advice.

Hi Jen, I'm no expert but if it is moving it must still be alive, would be wonderful if it hatched, I had one I thought was overdue, put it to my ear and could hear chick chirping a few hours later I heard picking then it hatched safe and sound. Wonderful thrill. Good luck with it and keep us posted. Mother nature is greater than all of us and lets us know quite often. l.o.l.

Hi Liv, thanks for reply. It's a definite respiratory noise, I had a couple, ages ago, that died within 24hrs with similar noise. Haven't had anything since we paved floor so this was out of the blue. I've just noticed he's got a few pin feathers coming on his head. Could moulting cause this type of thing? He hasn't been breeding so it's not that.
  15. Hi Renee just a question. When you say deformed legs, how, twisted limbs missing toes etc. When does it usually appear in chicks? ( ---days old) just curious.

Hi all, I was checking breeding cages to-day, heard odd noise from non-breeders. Found Grey Cock bird making a squeaky door noise. Grabbed him into isolation cage in garage. Treated him with, heat lamp, sulphadim to beak and water also 2 drops Ivomec to neck. Also caught all birds treated them with Ivomec as a precaution. Have kept an eye on Grey, he kept squeaking for a while it's now only 3-4 hours since I gave him treatment. Queak seems to have stopped and he is calling to birds in aviary he can hear them from garage. I thought respiratory infection when I found him, no wet floors etc. Any idea's what could be cause, would it improve this quickly? He doesn't seem sickly not fluffed etc. but don't know where to go with him. Don't want to risk others in aviary. Thank's for any help.
  17. Apart from the swelling she seems very normal and healthy, I have separated her away from the male and fostered the eggs to my blue spangle hen who is sitting on 2 eggs of her own, although just with a glance at the eggs they all seem clear so I am thinking that they are infertile I will candle them soon and know for sure. I will just keep an eye on her over the next few days and see what happens. She seems to be pooping fine, as she is sitting on eggs she only comes out mostly in the morning and lays a big poo. Hi Tonilee, don't know if this is much help,BUT . I had one hen who laid six eggs and looked as if she was going on to lay more. I watched and waited etc. no more eggs but she still looked egg bummy to me. She stayed that way for nearly three weeks or so,nearly until chicks fledged. Now she looks back to normal and is back in aviary as I didn't let mine have a second round. If yours has laid her 4th egg o.k with no problems, maybe she just has weak "pelvic floor" muscles if birds have them. If she's well otherwise maybe "time will tell" as they say. Good luck hope, your eggs are fertile.
  18. Beautiful picture's. It must be lovely seeing them interact with each other. Another Budgie lover in the making?

Hi Dave, had nest of 7, 2 were badly splayed. Two smaller ones were slightly splayed but when changed to shavings etc in box they were okay . Splinted other 2, both with sponge at first. Oldest stayed with sponge other one I changed to pipe cleaner and it worked really well for it, it kept lying on its side etc with sponge. Both have now recovered, are in kindy cage with 4 others, had a second "outing" in flight to-day while I cleaned cage all enjoyed the sun all flew around, (no other birds in flight at the time.) Whole seven chicks survived, I have 23 chicks and 4 eggs. Have only lost one live chick, one really cold night. So I'm "rapt" with my first attempt.BUT WILL NOT USE INSERTS AGAIN. I may not be so lucky next time. Thanks for the interest, was a good learning curve. May come in handy in future. Thanks Liv. I'm tickled pink!!!

Lovely, mine love corn and celery, didn't think of pak choy, I might throw in some seeds and try mine with it. It grows like a weed so would be a cheap snack and not long to wait.
  25. robyn replied to fero's post in a topic in Breeding Tips
Hi Fero.Does she have eggs yet or is she just being "flighty". I'm new at this also but guess if she had eggs one male would start acting like a partner feeding her etc. Ya think!! but that may not mean he's dad to all. Good luck.
