Is This Normal?
Hi, Just adding a query to this post. I am adding pics of my chicks, as they look now. No 4 is still minus tail feathers. I am now adding picture from Budgie pictures forum.QUERY. CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE POINTS of difference That show mine are carrying the long feather gene, but from replies the last bird is "Normal". How can you tell visually? if I come across another bird whether it has or has not the long feather gene? this is b.c.c. forum picture. My birds now are all flying etc. like my others, don't seem to have any trouble. But I will still watch what I pair them with.

Chicks In The Nestbox
Hi All, Read about this in Kaz's post and my first season breeding, I also tried it. Worked great, especially when I had 8 chicks in nest, took a big load off Dad as well as helping chicks. Good job Kaz. Will be continuing this next season.

Choking Baby
Hi, I don't know much about what this could be. If chick was 3 week's old it would nearly be ready to feed itself a bit so maybe it could be something else, the mucus sounds a bit suspicious. I'd be keeping a look out for other signs of illness in the breeding box. Others might be more help but it might be some sort or respiratory bug.

How Are They Split?
Thank's Dave Had a quick look, will come back to it when I have a bit of time to check it out further. Many thanks

How Are They Split?
Robyn, the short answer is "yes, sort of". You need a separate table for each of the "umpteen bits". You have the recessive pied worked out, I think, except that the cock is not "split normal" he's "normal split recessive pied" (The normal is dominant to the rec. pied.) Yes, all of the chicks are split rec. pied; they got it from their mother. Every baby she ever produces will get this from her, since she is "double factor" for rec. pied. The same goes for all the parents other traits as well. For each trait, they will get one copy of the gene from the father, one from the mother. That's where the separate tables come in, to figure out what combinations are possible from a given father and mother, for each separate trait. There are links around here I've seen to a good site where it is explained fairly simply for each budgie color and mutation. I will go to find it and add it here. the budgie place Each of the traits talked about in the article have a place where you can click to see more genetic details. These are very helpful. Good luck, have fun Thanks Finnie, That has simplified things a bit, the Cock bird in question is Green Normal split for blue and opaline apparently. Not rec. pied. So all the chicks have same traits of Mum & Dad so they will be as hard to work out, what they might produce, as Mum? All in the luck of the draw. Thank's again for your help.

Thinking Of Getting A New Bird.
Hi Ratsy, I saw your other birds on your link. Look like nice birds, now they have settled in to-gether, could you maybe get another pair to keep numbers even and maybe stop any hassles? Don't forget your quarantine routine though. Do you have any breeding box's in aviary? If your not going to breed yet and don't have box's in they should settle in o.k after quarantine. If you got the birds from same breeder or shop, you could maybe quarantine them to-gether. By next breeding season they should be used to each other.

How Are They Split?
If next year's cock is split for recessive pied, you can add that to the list, too If she is already a recessive pied, as other's have said would it matter if cock was split pied as well or would she still maybe breed pied's? Thank's Kaz,I have tried to work things out from these tables. BUT there's always a but isn't there. As hen is rec.+ umpteen other bits, cock is also split normal. Does this mean all the chicks are split rec. as well? And do they carry parents other traits as well?

We Have ******* Budgies!
Hi I did read somewhere on bbc about this. It does happen, but if your Colony breeding it's hard to say if either hen has mated, or just decided to lay because nestbox's were available. If they are quite happy with the arrangement, you could candle eggs to see if any are fertile. Also keep an eye out for possessive Cock bird/s BUT keep a close eye out for trouble as it could happen at any time. Caged pairs are the way to go if possible. It will save a lot of heartache in the long run. but keep posting to see how you go.

How Are They Split?
Thank's G.B. and Linda_s, I am trying to think ahead for next season as to which birds to pair for which result. I don't want to end up with heaps of one sort. But with the variety I got from this bird she's a clever little first timer I'd say. Thank's again for your help, I guess I can do some more reading on genetic's it's hard if you don't know the history of your birds until they breed. "Gotcha" l.o.l.

How Are They Split?
Thank's again Kaz. If I've got it does this mean, THIS HEN can produce any or all of the same chicks if she is paired with another normal cock. eg spangles, pieds opaline or normal's depending on sex of chick's and Mauve as well? Because this Cock was only carrying blue/ +opaline which she also has. Sorry to be a pest.

How Are They Split?
More pictures of Mum. enhanced colour to try to show cheek patch . Pale mauve but she is moulting doesn't help much

How Are They Split?
Thank's Kaz. When I first put picture of hen up,(ages ago), she was said to be Ty. 2 Y.Faced Rec. Grey Pied?THINKING OUT LOUD: So the Spangle's come from her? She has a few spangle type feathers on wings. The opaline could be from both then? Because I have both cocks and hens, opaline? The blue spangle's one hen, one cock(could be opaline as well)with dom pied spot? Spangle must be Mum + pied spot? One pair are olive? one opaline spangle hen, the other spangle cock. Spangle, must be Mum? So the cock bird is probably split opaline, split blue? but not spangle.Hen is split for everything else? Opaline, pied, spangle, blue/green? Because we have both sex's in blue spangle AND olive spangle where does Colour's cross?Hi Macka, No caged so all are from this pair.

How Are They Split?
Hi All, I am trying to figure out what this pair must be split for. These are their 8 chicks. If I have them correct. OpalineCock Spangle Hen Spangle Cock with head spot Gr Norm.C. 9(headspot) Y.F.Bl Opaline Cock. Op. Spangle 90% sure Hen Olive Spangle Cock Opaline Bl. Hen? Because I have both sex's opaline and spangle but neither parent look's opaline, Mum maybe spangle x ? I'm lost!!

Mum Plucking Bubs.(quails)
Hi all, I have 3 baby quails plus parents. I have noticed babies losing feathers and thought they may be moulting. Yesterday found Mum plucking the feathers.Dad has been great with them but it's Mum doing the plucking. Have caged chicks away from both parents, they were fully feathered. Is this normal and will feathers grow back? I haven't bred them before so thanks for any help.

Breeding Outcome Guides
Hi Renee, I didn't particularly want a red headed child, BUT I got one and wouldn't part with him. It's all in the gene's L.O.L. Half the fun is waiting to see what we get, I think. Don't know in show breeder terms.

Egg With Brown Spot Peeping
Hi Kazoo, Well that was a totally awful outcome for you after all your care and concern. Don't let it deter you from trying to raise more birds at a later date. Mark it all down to experience, but sad in any case. Better luck next time. :rip:
