You said it comes out and sleeps with quail? They would be on the floor, so can it fly? Are you sure it can see at all? If it's feathered etc as normal, maybe it can't find the seed if it's eyes are damaged. Years ago I had a grey that looked normal but continually followed the perimeter of the cage. When it was put on shelf it walked off that's when we discovered it was blind. Maybe if you caged it inside and tried to spoon feed it with rice cereal or starter mix it may try. It's worth a go until you can find out the extent of the problem. Keep posting to see how you go.

As I said before Hilly, great birds and pictures. Mine won't let me get great shots like those (maybe it's the camera person)
  3. Look at me now. Taken 20-2-'10 Nearly back to normal I'd say, at least in looks.

Wow Kaz's pied is a beauty. Hi Ratsy, one of my pairs, Dad was in the nest box as much as Mum, with five chicks it was a tight fit but they all survived it. So I think it just depends on the bird. Your lucky you've got two great sounding parents for first timers. I also found Dad liked spinach and greens early in morning, seemed to feed chicks a fair bit of it because you could see specks of dk green throught the skin of their crops.
  6. Hi, do you mean the crested budgies? The last lot on the link Kaz gave you? I haven't seen one myself but I've only started last year and don't show. Breeders might be able to say where you might find some.
  7. I've got one that lays flat on the side of my perch's (2x1) timber. I have to keep checking to see if she's sick.
  8. There are to many witness's for Kaz to back out now, eh Dave!!

Some beautiful birds there Hilly, love the last two. What are the parents of 2nd last (lt green opaline clearflight/ rec pied) I wouldn't have a clue but he's lovely. Still trying to get my head around genetics.

Hi Ratsy, great progress. Don't know what others think, could you add a bit more nesting material, oats etc. so Mum doesn't sit to tight on bubs? If they had a bit more, say an 2/3 cm deep it would be softer under them than the floor of box. Just watch your remaining eggs. See what others think. Memories of splayed legs with me. :sadsorry:
  11. Hi Nubbly, don't know if you noticed, if you click on his picture. it brings up a larger picture. Then you may be able to tell better. Another thing I just found out!!
  12. Hi 'flycow', We are all lost at the beginning, and I still am in a lot of cases. If you go to "mutations and genetics" on the PINNED ARTICLES at the top of the forum you will find various topics, COLOURS FOR BEGINNERS etc. if you read through these you can generally find explanations of what your looking for. Hope this helps
  13. Hi Jen, I'd say over to the experts but how long has she been paired up? If she's chewed back into box etc. she must be considering breeding. Maybe she is a slow starter. Is this her first time breeding? If conditions are right for the others who have laid I'd say your set ups o.k.
  14. robyn replied to jeddo's post in a topic in New to BBC
Hi Jeddo, I'm a bit further up the coast and I'm toying with the idea of putting a breeding cage in at end of the month. It's been stinking until now, but it has cooled a bit and I wondered how it would be to try a clutch or two,(birds co-operating of course). That would get chicks out and fledged before the really cold nights. I bred from August last year and it was still very cold nights with tiny chicks. My aviary is very noisy now so I think some would go down. If your hen is popping in and out of nest box she may be ready. Can you tell if they are in breeding condition?
  15. Is anybody there? Have you made any progress with birds? please keep us posted if you can.
  16. robyn replied to splat's post in a topic in Health Questions and Tips
It's a shame you can't show her Splat, but why not try for some equally good offspring? If it was not a genetic problem with her eye, she might hatch out some winners.

Lucky, could he have escaped or just fly around. Maybe he was waiting for some company after dinner .L.O.L. we have to be on the ball all the time.

Sounds a lot better 'splat' won't affect her breeding will it? Or did you show her?
  20. Mine would have a panic attack if I did that Kaz, I presume it would be a similar noise to air sac mites? If they are on iodine, logic would say treat for air sac? Would 7 drops a litre be o.k. each water change? Does it stay stable for a couple of days do you know? Iodine I mean.
  21. Just counted up and I think I bred 16 cock's and 9 Hens, 2 not sure. They are from (2) Ty 2 y.f. rec pied's one sky, one cobalt. So I presume they will stay pink, if Cock's. brown if hen's. (if I'm starting to get my head around a bit of it.) AND DON'T TELL ME I'M STILL WRONG G.B. ( I might have to get on the grog!! if I am)
  22. Thank's Kaz, I had found a similar article, although it's not cut and dried for budgies. The seed I buy in bulk doesn't state what is in it. I had Iodine blocks in aviary, but you can't tell which birds injest it, so until we have a problem we fly by the seat of our pants, so to speak. Because Matt had similar problem, his advice let me try to rectify the problem. I have now added 2 drops a litre into my water bottles of the aqueous iodine and removed iodine blocks. Hopefully this will stop any further problems. I will add iodine bells to breeding cages and leave it up to the birds. Thank's 'birdluv' remains to be seen if he is fertile. It's all a good learning curve though.
  23. Thank's Kaz, I thought so, I took that one in aviary but blind was down I can't believe how quick it's changing back. He keeps improving. Thanks Ratsy, You wouldn't think a bit of Iodine was that important. If it wasn't for Matt's input I would not have tried it. This is another plus for this Forum!!
  24. Taken to-day. What do you think?
