Lost One Of My "babies"
Hi All, I discovered one bird I bred this season (19-9-2009) sitting on floor of aviary 3 days ago. I caged him, heat lamp, antibiotics, Avimectin, he was about due and waited. He brightened up a bit I gave him some green seed heads I had in garden which he was eating. He went down hill again didn't know what else I could do. Yesterday he was up and down. On perch etc. calling to other birds down in aviary. This morning he died. I'm sorry to say until he died, I checked him to see if I could find out why, I didn't notice he had a detached lower beak? I think. Looked o.k until I parted feathers to look for mites etc. am adding pics.Thinking poor fellow may not have been able to crack seed and starved? after he died lower beak again lower beak. After I'd parted feathers etc. I'm feeling guilty I hadn't noticed this before BUT I'm wondering if this was an accident I wasn't aware of in aviary or could it be caused by anything else? He was very thin when I picked him up, but otherwise no injury etc to make me think he was hurt. All other birds seem okay. I caught them and gave them 3 mthly dose of Avimectin. Now i'm watching them like a hawk in case it was something else. any help appreciated.

What Is Your Definition Of A Bird Mill ?
Hi Kaz, just came in on this and haven't gone into whole "debate" yet, BUT. From my point of view all I have had from you and this forum, has been A1 help and advice and I would have been much less informed on Breeding etc. Remember the old stick's and stone's rhyme we learn't way back when!!! It still apply's. Don't let some uninformed .....! stop you from the great job and internet friendship we enjoy on this site. Tell them to get a life or blow it out their ear. We're with you Kaz keep up the good work.

Help! This Is Not A Budgie! :)
Hi, When I first got my birds I posted on the same behaviour. From the response I got( from the forum) this is perfectly normal, they have all sorts of strange sleeping habits. Not a problem.

Budgies Hurt Foot
Glad to hear your bird has recovered well, it's a bit daunting trying to help them. I think common sense goes a long way, I've been "off air" for a few days and just caught up. Glad you had a good result.

My Project
Sounds pretty good. If you have access it could work out easier to use pre mixed concrete, delivered to site you just have to spread it. We worked it out to be nearly as cheap as getting your own gravel, sand cement etc. plus the labour not an easy job.Been there done that!! If you have it all boxed up you could lay it in a couple of hours.

Budgie Acting Weirdly.
No she isn't laying an egg, I think she was in mating position, I looked it up. They are in a cage outside but i am not breeding until next year during the school holidays ( when I can be there 24/7.) I took them in because I have a kind of play gym inside and they play on it from time to time. As for the box a friend told me not to grab them and that way I don't have to. I'm getting rid of the box! Hi Ratsy, Is your outside cage big enough to put your playgym inside it, so they can use it anytime? I think you should either have them outside permanently or inside, not try to have them moving from one place to the other, you could end up losing your birds this way. Decide if you want them as inside pets or aviary birds that you enjoy outside and breed from them later on. Did you get any more birds yet? You said you were thinking of getting another one or two? Maybe they would be a great Christmas present.

Broken Leg.
Update on broken leg. I taped straw over break and left it for about 8 days. It looked okay but bird would not use foot, I thought it might have damaged nerves etc. He rested on leg but it was stuck out behind him, after a few more days he climbed all over cage with good leg & beak. I had removed splint at 8 days, returned him to aviary hoping he would regain use of foot, didn't use it to perch etc for several more days but to-day he's been using his foot, preening flying etc as normal so very pleased he has come good. Another lesson learnt I'd say.

Smash
Pretty bird, as to his toe I'd treat it with betadine e.g. if it was a rat bite just to make sure it doesn't get infected. It should heal o.k if it's clean and not infected.

Budgies Hurt Foot
thanks for your quick reply but he is does not always use it when he is climbing only when it is necessaary, and today i seen him hoping on the bottom of the cage with one foot the other foot curled and suspended he can move his toes but refuses to stand on it or walk on it? is it broken or just injured slightly will it heal by itself? thanks for your help grant =] Hi, I've just had one recover from a broken leg. I used a drinking straw cut to size and taped over break. I left it about 9 days. He then would perch with the bad leg out behind but not use it, his foot didn't work to grip etc. but he rested on his leg for a few days, climbed with his beak and good foot, so decided to put him back in aviary, it's been 16 days now and to-day he's been griping with his foot as normal . (I thought he may have damaged the nerves). He's back to normal now with no after effects that I can see. I'd say your's may have bruised or even broken little bones in his foot. It sounds like his will just heal itself over a few days. Let him rest in cage not fly around and see how he goes, mine had no reflex in his foot at all for nearly 2 weeks but he's fine now. Hope this helps. :grbud:

Does Her Beak Look okay?
Hi Finnie, as Kaz said beak is long but don't know how to trim it, never had cause yet but maybe someone could advise. As to Ivermectin vet said treat birds every three months, depending on what your treating for. If you have done some, I would do all, so if there are any concerns, you would not be controling it by only doing some, the untreated birds could reinfect the others.

Broken Leg.
Hi, Just checked on mine for umpteenth time. His leg is a good colour etc, he hasn't been using his foot at all but just now he put his foot down on perch for a second and there was some reflex in his toe's, good sign I think. He's been climbing around with beak and good foot eating etc so I very hopful now. Will leave split a couple of days and check to see if no infection etc. Thanks for your reply.

Broken Leg.
Thank's again Liv. Just checked again and looks normal colour,it's been about 8 hrs now, toes are not working e.g trying to grip . Will leave the poor boy until morning now and then see if there is any improvement. Haven't got a clue as to how long it might take to knit if it is broken.

Broken Leg.
Thank's G.B. no bone etc showing just doesn't seem rigid . Hoping what I've done will help. Keeping close eye out for swelling etc but he seem's more settled under lamp now. Will keep check on his foot colour etc. I suppose that would tell me if blood isn't getting to foot? can anyone tell me if that's right please.

New Members And Request For Opinions
Hi, Welcome to the club. Your remaining bird is probably calling to Fred because she? doesn't know where he's gone. Others could tell you about housing her with a cockatiel, but if you buy one or the other you should quarantine any new bird before placing them in with her. A picture would help others tell you if she? is indeed a she.

Broken Leg.
Thanks Liv, I removed the ring treated the broken skin with betadine, I cut a small section of drinking straw and slit it then placed it over where I think it's broken, between the elbow & foot, he's not using his foot at all at this stage, then taped the whole thing to keep straw in place. At the moment I checked him and gave him some green seeding grass and he's been on floor of cage eating that, so. Still under heat lamp.

What To Do For The Holidays
Hi Krosp, It says 2 birds kept on profile. If it's still 2 birds your asking about could you put them in the smaller cage a couple of days before you go. Then just transfer them to your Mum's? If it's on a stand etc it's probably safer than rearranging your mum's birds, quarantine etc. when the birds are staying away from home. Then Mum could keep closer eye on Cosmo for any trouble. You say small, but, smaller than show cage etc or just your average pet shop cage? It should be o.k. for ten days. Enjoy your holiday.

Broken Leg.
Hi, just found one of my birds with its leg caught. I think it could be broken. I've treated the leg where skin was broken. It's ring was caught on a swing. I've got him under heat lamp with antibiotics in his water. I wondered if I wrap its leg with a pipe cleaner as a splint, would this work? I used them for splayed legs so thought maybe it might work if it's broken. Any help gratefully received.
