Aloe Vera
Thank's Splat, the article I read was pretty simple and we have aloe growing so it would be no expense to try it. If it's helpful to keep birds in healthy condition I think I'll give it a go. :thankyou:Hi Liv, Our's keep getting new shoots off the sides of plant, I'll take a couple more off and plant them out so I have a good supply going. We'll have to wait and see what results we get. Worth a try.

Egg With Brown Spot Peeping
Sorry about your chick Kazoo, just when things started to look positive. I f Mum didn't cover chick during night, or day for that matter it could have died from cold. I suppose it's very cold there now anyway. Stick with it the others may do better if they hatch. I don't think you could have done any more yourself. Keep us posted on the other eggs.

Aloe Vera
Thanks Dave, I thought I might try it as a general preventative to keep birds healthier. As Aloe is used in heaps of human things I didn't think it would be harmful. It's whether there are benefits to it.

Love At First Sight
Hi Ratzy, How are things now? Any chance Mum & Dad could read some of the advice others have given to you? Maybe then they would understand things a bit better. It's worth a try. Otherwise try to follow the advice you get here and do the best you can for your birds.

Breeding question
Hi Humphrey, I'm no expert but cage set-up looks great, I can't tell if birds are in breeding cond. from pics. others may be able to. Have you had any progress yet? How long have they been paired up? Waiting is the worst bit. l.o.l.

Egg With Brown Spot Peeping
Hi Kazoo, just had a thought on what Dave said earlier. If Mum lays say 3 eggs and only sits after that would all three hatch together, or still 2 days or so apart? Mine all 'sat' from first egg so I was just curious. Have you had any more hatch? The pinkish one is probably clear. Cheers.

Egg With Brown Spot Peeping
Hi, When you check chick if it has whitish look in crop it will have been fed, parents will feed it on it's back for first few days, if it's squeaking and active they should feed it, you can check it's crop it won't be much at first, it's head will be floppy for a while. They don't need box covered, they need good access to food and water etc. If they feed first chick all should be well for others but keep checking to make sure. Mum should cover chick and Dad may be in box as well. Good luck with it , first times the hardest.

Sleeping Budgie
Hi Simon, does your chick look like this? If so it's splayed, next picture is one splinted but a lot younger than yours. If it's similar to first picture. try the splint, it might not help now but if all else fails, give it a go. If not do you think its leg/foot could be broken? Hope this helps a bit.

Out In Heavy Rain
Thanks Liv & Maesie, The actual aviary floor is dry, I left a plastic lined shadecloth blind down all night as usual. Rain would have come in front otherwise so it stayed down. I opened door from aviary to flight, they wait every morning to get out. They shoot out like a flock of racing pigeons and to-day I took the chance and let them out as usual, they had access to aviary but they stayed out for hours in the rain. Like kids playing in puddles I suppose.

Large First Clutch!
Don't worry about your chicks I had 2 pairs with 8 chicks this year, I lost one chick but the rest survived. Usually when I checked the little ones were snuggled right under bigger chicks, for warmth and comfort I suppose. Mother nature seems to work it all out rather well.

Out In Heavy Rain
Thanks Maesie, I've just been down and checked them they seem pretty dry now. We've had a bit of a break in rain so I've given them some greens and shut them into aviary section, it has paved floor. I left blind down to keep that floor dry overnight so it's still quite dry. They really had a ball out in the rain it's the first time they have been out in such heavy rain, mostly my new babies the "oldies" stayed indoors. As long as I don't see any after effects.

Out In Heavy Rain
Hi All, It's raining here quite heavily, it's still 20deg. A lot of my birds have been sitting out and playing in flight for a couple of hours, its fully open to rain. Is this likely to cause an problems for them or should I let them stay out? many thanks.

Just Found.
Hi everyone, It is teeming here to-day, my breeding season is over for this year. So I decided to have a good prowl around the site. I didn't realise there was so much going on in different forums. I usually stick to breeding section to pick everyone's brains. Now I will have to potter around a few other places to learn a bit more. Aren't computers just the most amazing things!!!!. When I get a bigger handle on it.

Excessive Amount Of Calcium Cuttle Bone And Iodine
Hi Marie, Just come across this post again. As to yellow face, I think Kaz meant if there was anything she could be eating to cause it. Maybe if she's only six months, old she may have moulted out and her new feathers are showing more yellow than before? Just a theory. Her being agro to the male and chewing etc could be she thinks she's ready to breed, they chew everything is sight around then, well some do. Hope this helps, if she's well and active she should be o.k. they say don't breed them before 12mths or so. If there's no nest box it won't matter.

Some Of My Birds
Hi Buick 87, sounds like your just starting? For pics on ph.bucket, before you upload see (more options)click on drop down arrow choose med 320x240 or 480x 640 save, then upload and you should have correct size for b.b.c. I had a lot of bother with this. Hope this helps, maybe you already knew it. As to birds love the Olive? pair, not up with colours, do you have a separate breeding section as well as aviary? Looks like good breeding cage set up, if birds are both ready you should soon have some results. Others may be able to advise more. Good luck and keep posting, you will learn heaps on here.

My Budgie Flock
Can't help with your questions Kirsty but some nice birds there, I love the green opaline in picture 6 . Others with greater knowledge (that wouldn't be hard) of Mutations etc . than myself could help. Are you colony breeding or cage?

Sleeping Budgie
Hi Simon, If it is splayed legs. Go onto HEALTH TIPS on forums there is a PINNED ARTICLE called splayed legs a solution. Have a look at this method of splinting legs OR I had some I fixed with pipe cleaners, you wrap the pipe cleaner in a loop around one leg leave about 1/2 in or so then around other leg above the knee. This holds hip in right position. BUT if yours is five weeks it might be a bit late to help it but you could still try even a bit of improvement would help it. Still post picture if you can to make sure that is problem. You would have to leave it on for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. Added liquid calcium ( 1 drop daily to the beak) may help. As to other query's did you have smooth bottom on nest box? This is what caused mine, so I found out from others on here. Or the parents sitting too tightly on chicks, or lack of calcium are all causes apparently. Make sure you have shavings, rolled oats, clay type kitty litter etc. in bottom of box, hens will pick it out but keep putting it back after chicks hatch. I don't know if it will get picked on, maybe, but if you can improve it enough for it to perch and fly etc without leg causing it problems it should be o.k. Hope this helps a bit but keep posting to see how you go.
