Hi all, have read about using lime under concaves etc for bugs. Does anyone know if you could whitewash insides of cages and or breeding boxes, using agricultural lime like a paint, let dry etc. before use, to prevent mites lices ect in the wood?Don't know if this would be harmful to birds. The recipe for wash was ag. lime salt and water.
  2. Livs feather dusters not mine and the YF has nothing to do with it.
  3. Great looking bird Kaz, BUT reading further seems looks can be deceiving, would the breeding 2 y.f birds have any bearing on your feather dusters? or is that another genetic problem? By the way kaz, I would LOVE the cock bird. I could use him for show breeding OR colour breeding as i am in need of a double factor yellow face type one, and he just happens to be gorgeous to boot Thanks Dean, the Hen is already a lovely aqua colour a bit different to photo. Spangle is "lightish" blue but very nice. Could chicks be dilute of these or am I right off track? Thank you Neville, I'm still at a loss with genetics etc. but hopfully they will breed nice babies for my aviary as I'm not into showing birds. Can you successfully pair either bird with another later, if they have bonded with each other now? If that makes sense, (wife swapping I suppose) when they are all in open aviary. Thanks Liv, don't know what happened there. I'm new at photobucket as well so maybe I did something wrong there. Don't know how to (re-set? ) pics on post or would I have to re do the lot ?

Thanks for the information everyone. Will use drip bottle and a tray for sand/soil for dustbath's. Should keep everyone happy.

Thanks Elsa I'll check out pet shop to see what I can use. I have a kitty litter tray for them to use as a dust bath in summer but haven't tried it as yet. Our floor is paved, so thought I'd use sand in tray instead of soil.
  6. Thank's Kaz, Does this mean any chicks would be white faced, but their young could revert to yellow faced? Still trying to get the hang of this. I'm not showing birds as long as it doesn't lessen/weaken the composition of the birds. yes They dont revert to YF though, they hide YF. If means they are double factor YF but dont show that they are YF. A DF YF will produce all YF chicks in its nests as far as I recall.

Hi all, I have a pair of King quails in aviary. Wondering if they can learn to drink from drip type bottle? Thought that may eliminate budgies getting access to droppings etc. in quail water as they are pretty messy, don't want bud's getting sick from this as they also will drink from dish as well as their bottle's. thanks
  9. Hi All, I have these two birds bonded, Breeder told me not to breed two y.faced birds to-gether or you lose one dark factor. What will this mean if they rear chicks. Any help appreciated. I don't have any alternate bird available for them so thought I'd let nature take it's course. Robyn

thank's Dave as long as result's are possible without harming either bird. Thank's Liv looks like it's up to the bird to make it happen. We can but try.
  11. the boys are brothers and yes in aviary but not THE aviary i have a few aviarys dave the one they are in is for birds that i wont be breeding their is only a few in their 3 to be exact one was prolaps hen others beyond age I have recently bought 5 surplus birds from showbreeder, they could not fly either, after quarantine when I put them in aviary. Don't think they realised they could fly but with a bit of gentle encouragement they started a bit at a time, now can't stop them apart from one "lazy" hen. Don't know how long they were caged for so don't give up I think it's just lack of space. Hope this helps

Hi all, have been trolling through various forum's, f.a.q. etc. Can anyone tell me if a small pet type cock can successfully breed with larger show type hen? Or vice versa. Have been wondering if I can pair up birds of unequal size and get a good clutch from them. many thanks. Robyn
  14. Hi, just looked further on forum and answered my own question. thanks

Thanks Kaz, I've been giving mine the usual, seed, greens etc but haven't tried the egg and biscuit so will see how they go with it as well, regards RobynFurther to yesterday, blended up biscuits to a coarse breadcrumb consistency. Looks very similar to what I have seen in pet shop now. Wondered if maybe there was a mistake in ingredients? It was 2 0z cornflour then went 2kg s.r. flour. Thought maybe it should have been 2 lb not kg.? That was amount of flour I got into mix. Strange that recipe would be part imperial, part metric measure. Any thought's on this if anyone else has tried recipe.RobynSounds like a misprint...since it worked for you do you want to alter the ingredient info in that topic for us ?Hi Kaz, Would'nt know how at this stage but would prefer if somebody else had tried it also. Robyn Thank's Elly had checked this out but recipe didn't seem to work, modified it and instead of 2kg s.r. flour I had to reduce it to 2lb. That seems to work but I would like others who have tried it to post.Thank's Robyn

Hi Kaz thanks for reply, used above recipe, am making it by hand as per usual pastry methods. I only got about 1 kg into dough. Have just got first lot out of oven. Looks like a cake type pastry, smells okay . Will have to wait now and see if it blends up okay. then taste test it to birds. Thought I'd get some ready for when birds start to breed. Do they only need it then or should they have some all the time? thank's again Robyn

Hi All, Can anyone tell me if, BRUSH BOX OR (LOPHOSTOMEN CONFERTA) Branch's AND/OR Foliage, are safe for Budgies. Checked on search but didn't find it listed. It's supposed to be native to east coast Aus. Didn't want to chance it without more info. Any help would be appreciated. many thanks, Robyn

  25. Hi all, just an update on "Hulk"s funny feathers, after a few days in Aviary his plumage settled down from crest on his chest to this. So I'd say stress had a hand in it as Liv. suggested. in earlier post. Third picture, also ruffled but caught him at wrong time with camera, has bonded with a Normal sky-blue hen wondered what off-spring may be, if paired? Different bird to "Hulk". Not named as yet. thanks Robyn
