  1. My understanding of melanin is like pigment of budgies base colour, eg white or yellow melanin. So does that mean the budgies have good strong colours of pigment if they have a black beak?
  2. Hi! I was hoping some of the breeders on here would be able to help me with a question about beaks I have. I have noticed that a variety of pictures of baby budgies on here range in beak colour. I was just looking at some of splat's nappy cage pictures Here and I noticed the variety. I think that as the budgies moults into adult, they get their adult cere colour, and I assume the black disseapears. So my question is, is this some type of mineral or vitamin deficiancy (don't think I spelled that right ) or is it just like a birthmark or something? ( I hope you dont mind splat, but I am using a couple pictures as examples) Here is a black- beaked and black -cered chick http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s230/sp...24thjune015.jpg compared to a adult coloured beak and normal coloured cere I have also noticed among my chicks mainly orange/yellow and sometimes a little black on beak.
  3. Thanks Kaz. I am hoping this round (I forgot to mention I left the albino in because she was looking to lay) that everything will go smoothly. If she starts to eat the eggs again, I will foster to another hen and give the albino some marbles to chomp on. I just worked out that the first egg was due to hatch yesterday. Because it was infertile, she ate it. I think it was about the 4th, 6th and 7th egg that she left. So, by the end of next week, if they hatch, I should have pinkies
  4. okay, Well an update is in need. Hen progressivley laid eggs, and she sat on up to 7 at once. Then eggs started disseapearing. The hen was eating the eggs, started with her first, the second. She skipped eggs that were fertile, and in the end she had 3 fertile eggs out of 7. With the chicks looking to hatch soon (I forgot to record date, silly me.... wait, I posted here... ) I fostered the three eggs to another hen with a clutch of 6 (1 fertile) and removed the foster hens clear eggs, so she is sitting on 4 fertile. The albino hen has been very active with male, they seem to be on each other all the time. He was a little suprised, she is a very pushy hen I trimmed their vents, so I hope it with increase fetility. Be back soon with more updates

  9. wouldn't that last hen also need to be spangle? Very cute, the first one looks nice!
  10. Are you putting any birds in the inter club nest feather show between BSSA and NEBS? Gorgeous birds!
  11. She looks like a Lutino. What colour are her eyes? What colour are her parents? She could be a slow starter, like mentioned. But yes, she would be able to breed I think.
  12. Lovley birds, I can't wait to see them moult out!
  13. That Lutino hen looks like a Jason Weidonhofer bird maybe? I have one of his lute hens, and they look similar. Lovley pairs, Lovley birds!!
  14. hate to sound like a broken record, but I agree with Dean
  15. He probably would be about 4 months.
  16. Gorgeous picture! Both budgies look quite similar appart from base colour
  17. He is gorgeous! I am sure your budgies will love him. Quarentine for a min. 40 days, longer is better .
  18. Winter and breeding they will eat you out of house and home and wallet! Like Kaz had said, you should always keep extra seed on hand. Having a couple dishes in there on hand are good. If you are worried you are low and seed, and can't get some until the next day, make up some budgie bread, cous cous or soft food for them

  23. I didn't trim at the startm because I thought that my birds weren't at the standard where I needed to. I think I will just test it, compare results. So Dean, do you leave "leader" feathers, I have heard them called. Apparently their are some feathers that helps guide the sperm or something?
  24. Hi All I have recently had two pairs of birds down. One hen has 5 eggs, and one has 7. Within the two clutches, the hen with 5 has one looking fertile, and the one with 7 looks like 2 fertile. Because of the low fertility I have been getting, I want to try trimming the vents. I understand that on the hen you can just trim until the vent is clear, but I am unsure of how to trim the cocks. What feathers are you meant to leave on the cock? I am going to let both pairs go down for another round, and see what the fertility brings.
  25. Gorgeous bird, Male I think.
