3 Pairs In Colony Breeding
Sorry for the ages long reply, need an update. Opaline blue hen was being a twerp, her and Willow (spangle grey) got in a fight. The opaline had a bad foot from a split ring gone wrong, and Willow opened it again. Not major, a little blood on perch. The hen and her partner were taken out for a bit, and I put them back in yesterday. I had to expect it sometime, but all seems good now and there has been no more fighting. Willow isn't heeps worried, because she is nesting now Marble (rec. pied cinnamon) and Willow both have 3 eggs each. Just waiting on the opaline hen, she laid one egg in the flight cage she was in, hoping they will start up again.

Soft Food Time + Aviary Shots
They nibble around it a little, I found the younger budgies like rolling in it  All natrual, apart from one perch. It is cheaper, and I find the birds like it more  The peice of dowel is near the door, so not many picts of it cause it was near were I was standing. Birds also like chewing the branches. Yup, It is raked and cleaned out every weekend, and sweeped (until I get to the base). My base is basically rock hard clay/soil, even mice or anythig can't get through. I just realised it must look messy! Sorry, branches are always put in before cleaning, so I can take away the shredded leaves. Droppings and seed are the only things there. More pictures! I put some fresh gum leaves in this morning: Spot the budgie! The Aftermath: Cinnamon Grey-Green cock next to his cinnamon grey father (mum was a rec.pied cin. grey-green/blue) Just going through his second moult. He looks small next to dad, he just isn't as tall. Mum looked, so he acted guilty... I saw these two mating the other day :glare: Kindie Cage aviary shared with 'tiels. Only has 5 chicks in there, 4 cinnamons siblings + foster cobalt. There is 2 opaline sky blue cinnamon hens, 1 cobalt hen, one light green cinnamon cock, and one cinnamon opaline hen. I think I will be keeping the cock, green hen, and one of the op. cin. blues. 3 I am keeping: Couple of shots: Aftermath of their gum leaves:

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
Her earliest egg would have hatched 22nd, and her latest the 4th. That includes albinos eggs. Because the eggs were being laid on the same day, and none were marked, I guess I will need to wait and see how it goes. The other three eggs in the nest never hatched, and were DIS I think. They were going browny splotches, so I took them out and cracked top of one. look like they all went into the air bubble, but never actually pipped the egg (broke through) and they suffocated

Where To Buy Millet In Bulk
No sorry I wouldn't mind knowing either, I only use loose seed, only buy millet from pet-shops when cheap and good quality.

Soft Food Time + Aviary Shots
Hi guys. Here are just some general pictures + Soft food time of my aviary birds. All of them are show birds, but quite bad quality haha. Some of them are from a couple days ago ( the worse quality of the large aviary) but most are from 20 mins ago General Aviary Shots: (Mrs. Fatso. From forum member Liv. It was a bit chilly today, so she was a little fluffed. Her name is Banana) 3 Bachelors: I will add more when someone posts!

First Hatchling
DF White Spangle is what it should be called. if the father isn't split anything, you will get all blue spangles. Other then the normal breeding food (veggies etc. ) , just make sure you have plenty of seed in their for them to make into crop milk.

Green Tail?
Can I have my $20 now? The law states that as an adult I am not allowed to enter into legally binding contracts or even bets with minors or children, so no, no money until you grow up. Sorry. Doesn't that mean that by laying the bet, you already broke the law? ( )

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
That is interesting GB. The confusion of genetics though haha. I can see blue appearing on the wings, and a little more on the head (pins looking black) I will check again later on today, maybe some more pictures.

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
okay you wrote this so when were the /albino yf boy and the albino hens three due or do you not keep record of that ? also i suggest when you find out whos chicks are whos you work out exactly what you albino hen is masking its very very helpful to know another thing why would you be thinking rec pied do you have any history on your birds ??? if not can you find some out at least Peronts of birds you brought that would stop your need to guess and cut back the options you may produce also the dark pin look could indicate a yf chic so theirs that also I forgot to record dates, all I know is both clutches were laid at the same time (eg. grey-green hen layed on one day, and I got an egg from albino that day also) The albino hen is sitting on another clutch now, so I will find out what she is masking then I hope. The reason I am thinking rec. pied or cinnamon is because of the plum eyes, which Kaz suggested. I mis-read them at first, and they are actually Plum. I don't know the people that breed the grey-green/ lt. green pair, I will ask the breeder of the split /ino and ino hen though. YF.... I guess. So much guesswork with budgies, time will tell

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
okay, so looking at a white based (grey or blue) cinnamon opaline OR a rec. pied opaline cinnamon white based?
-
Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
I doubt it is a DF Spangle, I can see barring on her head (black pins coming through) Not sure if you can see it in the pictures.

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
So it could be a cinnamon ( or rec. pied) opaline hen? I am starting to wonder if it may be one of the eggs from the foster pair. YF Opaline Spangle Grey/ Albino X Albino hen. What do you think?

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
Thanks rachelm Band is on still, and looks like it will stay. Chick is looking whiter by the day, and I am 95% it is a hen, what do you guys think? My first time sexing a chick. Eyes are still looking plum, or even redish. Can't see it much in photos though Here are some pictures:

Grey Green X Lt. Green Spangle
Chick is looking quite white based, fluff is coming through. Late ringing, but it has small feet and seems like a slow starter. I put the ring on today, it may slip off though. Changed bedding to seed mix. Piccies soon

New Rings For 2011
I have hens with chicks hatching that will be hatching about then (mid clutch) And I think I will use the most of my rings up on the three clutches. I totally miscalculated the numbers though, and I think I will have at least 30 spare ( I have only had about 20 chicks out in blue rings) , that is assuming these 3 clucthes use at least 10.

Euthanasia.....a "forbidden" Topic
I am glad you posted this Kaz, and I am sorry about the hen. It is a very touchy topic, and I hope no one gets angry or annoyed, as with any animal hobby, animals will need to be Euthenised for different issues. I have never done it myself (my father did it), but I have had a clutch of 5 chicks with such horrible splayed legs, they were vertical, that needed to be euthenised. My dad found, that because the chicks couldnt fly (didnt have feathers) that it was easier enough just to give a quick clip with the shovel between the head and body. It is sad, anytime an animal dies. Cheers to Kaz for posting this, and I hope that is will help some people when they are in trouble

Nail Clipping & Crustiness
Forgot to add - Try putting a rough nail perch in their cage to help keep nails down

Nail Clipping & Crustiness
I have clipped both budgies and cockatiels nails. I find it is easier with two people when your starting, but possible with one. I use scissors or nail clippers. If you have birds with clear nails, it is easier. In the birds nails there is a thing called "quick" or basically, the blood in the nail. If you clip to far, you clip into the blood and if not cared for, budgies may die from blood loss (extreme circumstances) I just clip the minimum, I have never got to the quick. It is quite eay. Get one person the hold birds, then use one hand to hold birds foot, and other to clip. Make sure you have a firm grip on the foot, because you dont want the bird moving. Here is a picture to help: http://www.kaytee.com/assets/005/22037.gif

More Scaley Face
If you think that's expensive, I suggest you not get into Show Budgies... $40 is nothing compared to what others have paid for good quality birds! Back on topic, you're doing an awesome job Anne... well done and they're lucky to have found you. I merely meant for the quality of the bird, and from a pet shop, that is expensive. @ Nerwen Same!

Male Vs. Female
I would definetley go boy. Hens are very bitey (one has drawn blood from me) , and I found that I can only properly have a relationship with a male ( ie. special traits, chirpy, tame) BUT that said, a female can be tamed. Males are alot friendlier. You may find she will lay eggs, but no she will not become depressed with not being able to breed. Males can also beomce a little... seeking of a mate ( humping everything) but they will grow out of it. It normally is when they are becoming sexually mature, so about 8 months or so. It does pass by one year/ 1.5 years. I would go male Males also talk better.

Meaning Of The Words Used In Different Languages For Budgerigar
Lots of different names in aboriginal language. Budgerygah is another. The aboriginals would track the birds breeding patterns, and when the fledglings left the nest, and were nice and plump, they would catch them before they could fly. They would cook them much like the kangaroo, burying them under hot coals and letting the feathers singe away. GENTLE? GENTLE? Obviously that's not describing the nasty hag of a hen that was hanging off my finger, drawing blood.
