  1. /////////////////// It certainly does Jack, many people i know determine the sex of young budgerigars using this method including myself. Here is an example of why the "rings around the nostrils" method is not true: He got named 'Ariel', because of the nostril rings, and I didn't know better. But he is definitely a boy! He's very bonded with a hen, and he's over a year old now, and has never had a brown cere, or any change in his cere at all. You can't just look at the nostrils, you have to consider the over all color of the whole cere. //////////////// Hmmm a debate going on here lol, white around the nostrils is the case as far as sexing young budgerigars make no mistake about it,i have a mate of mine writing an article "he's been breeding budgerigars for over 30 years & is well known by a lot of breeders"i will post it here when he is done. The fact of the matter is, this rule does not apply when sexing recessives & ino's as is the case with the picture above "recessive".In he's article he will explain how to sex ino's and recessives ,Watch this space cheers Phill Thankyou! I was just about to say sexing rec. and ino's is different. I still go by my original statment.
  2. That is awesome! I have only just got the guts to post in this thread, because silence is better, but I have been following every update. Glad to see everyhting worked out!
  3. Check this out : http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=23594
  4. Just because a bird is certain colour and size, it doesn't mean they need to be the same gender. eg.
  5. I bet your a little regretful you gave her to me now
  6. Update:First chick is here! Whoops, don't know what I was thinking I meant $50
  7. I would say female, I also sex through white rings around nostrils, could you get a better picture by any chance?
  8. Great pairs sunnie! I can see some winners from the Stan Watson in there right? The sky blue and one of the fallow hens. Gorgeous birds, Some lovley chicks from them
  9. I agree. I was going to say lop eared, I find that they are quite gentle and not physcho jumpy scratchy like some rabbits. And they are super cute
  10. Umm ...........NO All hens will be cinnamon and cocks will be spilt My head is quite fuzzed up tonight.
  11. Thanks Nuubly! I can understand why not to use them now. If I used a cinnamon cock, then all hens would be normal. So I would really only use a cinnamon cock if it is REALLY important for some quality hens. I can't find much on here, I tried but next to nothing comes up NUBBLY breeds fallows for show............she knows as I have said already. That why she posted in your topic. Thats why the suggestion about not using cinnamons. PS Nubbly is also a JUDGE of budgerigars at shows. Thanks Kaz. yes why we beginners are told to stick to normals no other reason bar as if you dont know the back ground of your birds you cant breed a line straight forward to plan with out things popping up even if you breed your own normals these is a chance of something recessive popping up but less a issue if only once rather than lots I don't know the lineage of the 2 grey cocks It's okay though, I will be glad to see the outcomes. The two greys are one's from you. I think I get the jist of fallows. I don't have any normal opalines to put into my fallows full stop. Actually there is one grey green normal cock, very poor marknigs though. I wouldn't use him unless it was a larger bulky hen with no head on her, and I don't think I am near that stage yet So mainly pair the birds back to normals?
  12. I had this situation once. The mum was on 4 chicks. She fed them all, and the grew to be healthy birds Good Luck.
  13. Sorry, Didn't see this post. I think I understand now. Cinnamon Dilutes, and in Fallow, it would diulte to much? Thanks GB, I have read them both and earned some more knowledge
  14. Sorry when I said the above , I didn't mean to cinnamon fallow, i just meant in general that cinnamon and opaline are important . But I do not know much about fallows but from what i do know is Kaz and Nubbly and GB are all right, you DO NOT PUT CINNAMON TO FALLOW. My advice Squeak is to google what ever you can find on fallows and I am sure you will get the right advice. Key words research. Trust me, cinnamon takes up most of my flock it was the worst mutation to get into, coz I went crazy buying stock birds and breeders. Why can I not put cinnamon to fallow? I can't find much on here, I tried but next to nothing comes up
  15. I'm not breeding pet? Why is cinnamon bad for fallows?
  16. I may try one pair, he is the loveliest cock I have, Why is it bad to put cinnamon in? Is it possible to get cinnamon fallows? (aren't they already?)
  17. that was meant to be weeks. She also wouldnt get out of nest, I lowered the nest and put on the floor. I opened the lid, (this was after I tapped for a bit, she just screeched) and backed away. I exited the aviary and she just stayed on the nest. I tried shutting the lid, and she still wouldnt come out. Finally I just put the box back (this was all yesterday) and I went out there today when she was out, she just bolted for her nest.I didnt snatch or grab her, I just opened the lid and nudged her with the flat of my hand (so she couldnt bite) and she finally got off, and as she came out of the door I netted her. And no, you aren't being picky. I value the advice of people on here above anything.
  18. If she was incubating and with 5 fertile eggs she most likely was, the longest she should be off her eggs is 20-30 mins, so if its been longer the eggs may be chilled. Have you a hen with eggs at the same stage to transfer them to ? How long has she been off the eggs ? She is a very fertile hen, I can't wait to try her with a different cock. YF Blue Opaline Spangle/Cinnamon, gorgeous bird, father of her current mate (DF Spangle YF) You didnt answer my question I did. Just didn't make it heeps notable. Sorry, my bad. It is in bold. (as it was in the above one) and I made it bigger
  19. Looks fantastic Dave, I am sure the birds will love it!!
  20. How old is the chick on the right Kaz?Cant tell you right now as its dark and the records are down in the breeding room. Chicks are also in a foster nest.PS notice one chick looks like it is hugging the other one That's okay, I can wait till tommorrow. Aww cute, I only just noticed that If its the same chick, that would make it 16 days old

  23. I am sorry I sounded harsh also But I am really serious when I say I did check the birds before the boxes went in. All the birds are wormed, and if I had my medicince I probably would have treated the hen, and it would have been gone in a week. it is just **** luck that when I don't have medicince it develops. I really don't think it has been months, maybe 3 weeks approx. I am not making excuses, but I do take good care of my birds, and they are wormed and treated with doxy etc. So I am a little miffed that they appeared. **** my life. The pictures may be true, and she does have the scaley on her face, I don't know about you guys, but it is showing up really dark on my moniter, but it is lighter and not so stained in real life. You also said yourself that birds feel more pressured to stay on the nest when colony breeding. I do see the hen, but mostly just poking her head out to check mate is there, or get a quick feed. That is why I have just looked over (which I know is bad) the face, because I really only properly noticed it a couple days ago, and I knew I was getting my new meds soon. It was only when i saw her going back into the nest I saw her vent. I feel bad, she was on 5 fertile eggs and she put a nail through one when I grabbed her from the nest She is sure to lay mor eggs in the holding cage, I can only hope they don't chill before I can get to them and put them in a nest. She has laid 11 eggs before, all fertile.
  24. okay, so it has been established I made a mistake. So if I did miss something, everyone does. I probably forgot to check vent, so now it will make me extra careful. I hope I will be able to continue to post a progress report, and thankyou for the help everyone has offered
  25. Cut feathers drop out and are replaced. Read member Livs account of her feather dusters and you will find they moulted like any other budgie. There are some who have said a feather duster doesnt moult, but it isnt true. Thanks Kaz, I have read it this afternoon What I meant , though I did get the answer, is when you clip the birds do their feathers grow back straight away, or only when they moult. I heard someone say if you clip their feathers they just grow back instantly and kill the bird with the effort and stress.
