Thanks Liv and Ratsy.. Although every time I peeked at her last night she was sleeping on the floor, she seems a little better this morning, chirping loudly and has been on the swing, she also has eaten millet and some seed. I'm not taking her to the vet at this stage, I will see how she is when I get home from work this afternoon....

I got home this afternoon and one of my young chicks was injured. There is a gash on the top of her head; My first thought was a fight...... I removed her immediatley from the avairy, bathed in warm plain water and applied a very small amount of Betadine....I have place her in the sick cage - mostly covered - heat lamp. After watching her for an hour or so she can, but is not resting on the perches, she is sitting on the bottom of the cage with her head resting on the side of the cage...., she has no other obvious injury anywhere else, and no injury seen to her legs or feet, she is chirping and does moove around sometimes..... I am thinking now that maybe she has crashed into something and hurt herself more than the obvious....do birds get concussion? Is there more I can do for her in the short term? a trip to the vet if no improvement by tomorrow but tonight I have no car.... Has anyone experienced how a vet diagnoses if a head injury has accured? Since taking the picture I have put seed - millet - and water on the bottom of the cage....

Thank you all for the support.....but I still feel like a bit of a tosser! So easily preventable.... On the calendar it is now Kaz..... I give the dogs a chewable tablet on the 1st of each month, now the birds reminder is on the 1st day of the month every 3 months!

Hi Cranberry..... Would you have to cut the cage to attach the breeding box to the outside?

Update on my hen.... I took her to the vet, they put some poo under microscope and she had worms... I felt really bad that this could have been prevented if I had wormed them all when I was supposed to.... She is 100% fine now and I have treated all my flock. I learned this lesson the hard and expensive way!

Thanks Robyn and Ratzy....She is still active and eating/drinking etc......I cleaned her up yesterday so she is now clean and has stayed clean today, the droppings on the newspaper are the same though....fairly solid but watery.......I will keep going with the sulfer meds... Thanks Robyn......this is what it sounds like.... Watery droppings: An increase in the amount of urine is often confused with diarrhea. The fecal matter will be the same, but there will be notably more fluid around the feces. A change in the color of the urine is also a warning. Excessive watery vegetables, poor quality or dirty water and even the stress from being moved to a new home can cause watery droppings. I will still take her to the vet tomorrow......just in case...

Hi all... I am concerned about my hen: she is active, eating, not fluffed up, her droppings are quite solid but seem to have a lot of water in them...?? I hope that makes sence..... She has finished raising a clutch of 5 chicks about a month ago, she was put in a cage by herself for 2 weeks after that, and seemed fine up until now. I have removed her from the aviary cleaned her up, and put her in the hospital cage inside with a heat lamp and I started sulfer meds today.....Is there anything else I can do? I will take her to the Vet on Monday if there is no improvement. All my other birds at this stage seem fine.....there is no dampness in the avairy....

Splat it's Galah !!!! cheekfood.....I too was very sad when in the September school holidays just gone, we found our cat "playing" with a baby Kingfisher......I grabbed it and put it in a spare cage where it sat on the perch - no blood - nothing broken....but it couldn't fly, I think it was very young....I knew I couldn't keep it as you would have needed a permit so I took it to the local animal "hospital", filled in the forms and rang 2 days later only to be told it was euthenized because they don't survive in captivity?? This may be so, but surely it could have been taken "somewhere"...... I guess its finding the right vet.......

I dont believe so but others have said it is so. I am yet to be convinced that a budgie that looks like a normal in all respects and has a head patch is called a dominant pied ....I stand to be corrected just the same if anyone knows the facts. okay, thanks Kaz....

Ratzy....I wouldn't touch anything now, you should not ever move the eggs...just leave it, the hen will most likely remove it again anyway...you can change the bedding once the chicks hatch, they will be fine

Kaz....this is the thread I was reading last night - when I thought I had it all worked out !! So....does this mean that if a bird has a big patch then that bird is dominant pied - regardless what it looks like????? Then if it has a smaller patch it could be split recessive??? - but not necessarily if the bird is a spange...??

Thank you all so much for helping me get my head around this... Nubbly.... I have printed off your reply and I will study it - it makes 100% sence -thanks for taking the time..... okay, so I will explain the chicks... The cinnamon and opaline chicks come from dad being split cinnamon/opaline. The blue opaline chick is because dad is also split blue. The head patches can mean these 2 chicks are possibly split recessive, although not all patches mean this on spangle birds???? I hope I got it....
