Cubic Metres
Not positive about it Maesie but my understanding is that concrete is made with a mix of cement and gravel whereas cement is a straight powder mix. If you poured it straight out of the bag without adding gravel you would have used rapid set cement. Concrete is a stronger mix used in building slabs for houses, etc whereas straight cement is generally used for things like posts on pergolas (I think )To give yourself a bit of leeway you would need about a quarter of a cubic metre of mixed cement (or concrete)

Cubic Metres
One cubic metre means 100cm by 100cm by 100cm(like a big box), don't get confused with 100cm^2 which is 10cm by 10cm Going on Kaz's 10cm rule for every ten square metres of floor (a 2x5metre aviary) you would need one CUBIC metre of cement

My Mad Dash To The Doctor
It's funny I've met all sorts of critters that bite but the little six legged ones are always the worst I think it's worse when your not expecting it to happen either, I stepped on a bee in my walk in robe a few months ago and it took me a full minute to realise it was a bee and that my foot hadn't been torn off Fancy sitting there not bothering anyone and an ant decided to crawl into your ear

Re-sprouting Gum Tree
New growth will go limp very quickly, if you can find a small jar or something to put it in with some water it will last a littl longer

Turbosole For Canker
Yeah I had definately planned to wait Neat, just wasn't sure what the guidelines were for recovery from a contact with canker.

Re-sprouting Gum Tree
Go for it Even if the stump had been poisoned unsuccesfully any poison would have deteriorated by now and wouldn't be in the new growth. They'll love it!!!

Turbosole For Canker
Definately canker, took a swab from her throat and stained it at work and looked at it under the scope, can clearly see the little round critters floating around. She also has some small ulcers visible near the top of her throat and was vomting whole seed late last night when the symptoms first appeared. So what I need to know is, do I need to treat the cock and how long should I wait before trying to breed him again? He's getting on a bit and we really do want some chicks from him.

Long Distance Travel - By Airplane?
Neat has a purple one Lettuce is okay if you are only using it as a short term water source. The reason it is bad is that they can consume too much of it and end up taking in excess water via the lettuce (thereby getting the runs) in the short term it's okay

Anyone Have A Link To Microscope Images?
I am taking a slide back to workto look at under the microscope to try and diagnose my dead spangle hen. From symptoms I'm pretty sure I'll find canker but I'd like to know what it actually looks like Does anyone have a link to images or can atleast give me a verbal description fo the moment? I tried yahoo images but got lots of images of rotten fruit so no help there, did get images of mega though

Turbosole For Canker
She has been fridged and I'll take a swab when I get home

Turbosole For Canker
Thanks for all your advice guys, she died overnight  Even more devastating becasue she was my only proper show spangle hen at the moment (paired to my DF spangle Ozzie). Ozzie is devastated too, he was sitting next to her trying to preen her when I found her this morning. i'm still planning to get something to put in the cupboard for next time (hope not) I have a couple of questions, should I still treat Ozzie? And how contagious is it, how long to I need to wait before repairing Ozzie?

Turbosole For Canker
I don't have an avian vet close by so I'll probably try my regular dog/cat vet first, he's a great bloke so hopefully if I go in there and see him and obviously know what I'm talking about and explain that I need it quicker than 'next day delivery' if possible he will hopfully be happy to sell me a little  Also he knows that I do wildlife care, etc so he knows I have a reasonable amount of common sense when it coes to this sort of stuff. Tomorrow I am going to get my butt into gear and start setting up a proper budgie first aid/emergency meds kit.

Turbosole For Canker
 Fingers crossed for you Renee. I'll do a quick ring around of vets in my area first thing and see if I can con one of them into selling it to me over the counter and otherwise I'll give Rob a call :laughter: If I tell a white lie and say I normally get it from Rob but I need it 'now' then someone might be willing to, maybe my usual vet might.

Turbosole For Canker
Fantastic Renee! Does it work well?

Turbosole For Canker
She very elderly and would be in bed by now, and she certainly wouldn't be able to get it to me so it would mean getting my two small ones out of bed. Sigh, gonna go have another look at her and see how urgent it looks. Anyone know what the progress of canker is like? (ie. how long as she realistically got without treatment until, well, you know)

Turbosole For Canker
I'll give AV a call and see if she knows

Turbosole For Canker
I don't really know any in this area  Will a vet sell it over the counter or do they generally insist on seeing the bird?
-
Turbosole For Canker
fantastic, now where to buy some in a hurry  Also is there anything I can do for her tonight to try and help? (other than the obvious warmth, etc) She was in a breeding cage but I've blocked the nest up now but left her with her mate as I imagine he will need to be treated too(he seems fine though).

Turbosole For Canker
I discovered a hen this evening which I'm 99% sure has canker. I want some turbosole to put in the cupboard for situations like this when I'm fairly confident of the diagnosis and it's late on a Sunday night and not easy to have a bird looked at by a decent vet. Does anyone know whether you can buy it 'over the counter' or whether it requires a vet visit? Also any other suggestions for a home remedy? I don't have the equipment for a crop wash (unless I can use 3mm tubing like what I feed my baby possums with, I know some of the wildlife carers use it for crop feeding)

Hen Has Lost Her Partner!
I lost a cock in a breeding cage last week, the pair didn't have a box on yet but on the off chance she might produce a fertile one I added a nest box the day he died. 2 days later she layed an egg and then two days on another one. I have fostered these eggs to another nest but I too shall be interested to see whether they are fertile.
-
Hen Has Lost Her Partner!
I assume you don't have another pair that could foster?
-
Points To Be Considered Before/while Fostering Chicks
It is preferable to foster with a clutch that has chicks about the same age (ie, you wouldn't put a newborn in with a clutch that is about the fledge) You can foster more than one chick as long as you don't overload the foster parents. Just as personal preference if I have the choice I try to foster with a clutch that is a c;early different mutation so there is no confusion, eg. put a green series chick in a blue series nest. Of course that's only if the option s there
