Happy birthday for tomorrow Leanne Unlike other moults throughout the year, where budgies shed some feathers, the April moult is when a budgie will shed every single feather on its body. This is the most stressful moult of the year and requires the most attention as its also when temperatures are getting colder. (personally i think they should reschedule it to be in the middle of summer ) They get very scruffy and stressed and sore with new pin feathers. Some that are weaker or have underlying issues don't make it though. They need a quality diet filled with protein, amino acids and vitamins for healthy feather growth. ( i put a roast chicken carcass in my aviary today and it looks like Parana's have attacked it )
  2. Robbie and Renee (the two spangles) are one of my favorite pairs. I am trying very hard not to count my chickens before they hatch, but i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited as some a due to hatch in a few days
  3. Some pairs were laying eggs in the old birdroom, however, since moving them to the new birdroom there has been a BOOM in egg production. the pairs that were not breeding before, are breeding now Egg tally for some of my pairs are as follows... One egg to this pair so far - she has just started laying. 2 eggs to this pair (they also agree the new birdroom is much better than the last ) 7 eggs to this pair (many fertile too) 6 eggs to this pair (many fertile) 5 Eggs to this pair (many fertile) I couldn't be happier at the moment. I have other pairs down too, 10 all up and there is only one who is not showing much interested in breeding! They seem to be really REALLY loving their new home
  4. Congrats on the new egg. I agree to be careful with how much checking you do. Its best to try and keep it to as little as morning a night. Birds are very sensitive to your stress. If she breaks this one. I would take out the box and just let her be. Seeing as they were a breeding pair before you purchased them, you have no idea how much she has bred in the last year. she may be over her recommended 2 clutches already. She may be in need of a rest.

I love snow. I have seen it a few times - I have spent some time in Canada as a kid and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVEEEEDDDD it!
  6. No you don't. Megabateria is in most birds and in the birds environment in manageable numbers that the bird is not affected. Its not something that is airborne, its shed though droppings. Mega is normally a secondary infection to something that is bringing down the birds immune system. There is a product called Megabac S that you can get though your vet. Funglin can also be gotten though your vet. I feel the chances are slim that any of your birds would have been affected. If you seen any signs of sickness in the flock then get the medication. Try giving a dash of apple cider vinigar in their water - it is believed to help keep mega (And other nasties) at bay.

April is my favorite month of the year. Not only does it contain my birthday - it also has April fools day (1st) , World Autisum awareness day (2nd), World health day (7th), Easter, ANZAC day AND... April is also the month of... the.... Annual MOULT!!!! Last night while cleaning my aviaries i noticed the HUGE increase of feathers around the place and just had to share. There are clumps like this everywhere around my back yard And a stack in the aviary Even the poor quail can not escape being feathered. Oh, and not to mention my lawn!! The birds are not looking really moulty yet, but i will be sure to post photos of their scruffy faces when they are. Please share your feathery April photos too
  11. That would be megabacteria. Glad you have a result and she is getting treatment
  12. Here are some more questions that need our experienced advice. My female budgie is starting to get a bit big in the stomach but she is really drowsy what dose that mean??r=1? Answer 1) could be getting overwieght and needs a birdie diet, or could have some eggs! the vet can tell you. Can you answer this better?? ---> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_y...01184726AARdZDj ----------------------------- Why does my budgie eat so much? she eats the nuts all day and also the fruits and veggies. ALL DAY!? Answer 1) obsessive compulsive? I had a budgie that used to throw his gravel out of it's cup and on to the floor.. until the cup was empty. He would have done it all day long, I got to the point I'd give him gravel for a little while every day. Does you budgie have toys? Might be a case of boredom too. Answer 2) probably because she was starving. it also might be a good thing. Can you answer this question better? ----> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_y...01073517AAHVBub ----------------------------- For you taming experts out there Training 2 parakeets? i need some help. i bought 2 parakeets at a local petsmart about three weeks ago, and i want to start training them. both birds are on the same cage and i want them together so please dont tell me to separate them. ive started hand feeding the birds millet spray so that they can start eating from my hand without them touching it. what are some easy ways to train both birds? i know its harder but id like to hear some suggestions. thank u! No answers yet http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_y...31201951AA1dL2v ----------------------------- My bird hit her head and she's making this weird high-pitch squaking noise and she's agressive!?!??!? I just got back from getting my hair done and my brother told me that my pet parrot was squawking a ton and that usually means she's really hungry. He was putting the food dish in when she tried to sneak out the little door. She hit her head and fell off the cage. My brother said she fluttered to the ground so I'm not worried about that, but she did hit her head. Now she is on her food dish and she is being pretty aggressive. She makes a very high pitch squawk and tries to bite and backs away. She hasn't done that since about a month ago which was only a little while after we got her. My question is, what should i do? I tried to calm her down but she just gets angry. Should I keep trying to get her out, or will she just calm down on her own if i leave her in there? -thanks! okay well my mom went and got her out (even though i asked her to wait..... -.-'), and she is sitting on my shoulder right now. But I would still like to know whether i should interact a lot with her or not. She's acting pretty normal except when i put my fingers near her. Should i show her i won't hurt her by petting her or just leave her be? Answer 1) I think you visit a vet. Maybe she is hurt. Answer 2) Yes you should show it a lot of love pet it make it think it is number one. When one of my parrots gets hurt they want to be held and love on. Can you answer better? ---> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_y...31174344AApHCtJ ----------------------------- If i put a green male budgie with a white female budgie what colour well i get? Answer 1) A simple Punnett square tells me that you have a 25% chance of getting white and a 75% chance of getting green. Answer 2) more than likely green because it is more there natural color and it is dominate but you never know without past history of the parents etc. you could get blue just have to see Answer 1) If they do not like each other, you'll get red, as in blood. Do not put 2 birds in the same cage until they are familiar, have played in a neutral area and are happy together. 13. I will tell Steve you have been admiring his site - he will be thrilled My routine is flexible. I get up in the morning and open the bird room. Check each bird for signs of sickness. check seed and water - clean and replace where necessary. Check the flights for the same things In the evening i change water and seed, check nests and feed veggies. Sweep out the bird room and close it up for the night. I spend about 2 hours a day on the birds, some days more, some days less. (that is not including all the building etc that is currently happening)
  14. Hey, i agree too... as i said i am all about quality of life. Severe disability means there is no quality of life. I had a chick with severely splayed legs. I let him get to about 7 weeks old to see how he would manage his disability. Sadly he could not get around at all after leaving the nest box, so it was kinder to put him to sleep. I would never be cruel .
  15. cute pair The cock is YF2 dominant pied opaline ans the hen is YF2 recessive pied. You will get dominant pieds, normals and split recessive pieds. most babies will be YF2 as well. You should get some pretty babies
  16. If there is no staining or moisture in the feather above the cere then i would not be worried. Budgies sneeze like all animals to clear dust etc from their sinus cavities.
  17. Yes, and if you have any troubles doing it, admin staff can do it for you
  18. Pluck the feathers, it doesn't hurt them and it stops the poop sticking. you are aiming for a bald spot big enough to completely expose the vent and some skin around it. .
  19. I agree with Daz. You could also set her up a free email with something like hotmail. It is not accepted by the board for a normal account creation, but if you email your details to an admin, they will be able to create it for you
  20. Is there any dampness or staining in the feathers above her cere?
  21. This little one has joined all the other birds in heaven, so i guess it doesn't really matter... Everyone has their own thresholds when it comes to this, none is right or wrong as its a personal choice
  22. I have had to do it too a number of times, its never easy, but its all part of keeping animals. With me, it's all about quality of life. Disabled budgies can make lovely companion pets. They bond closer to their human owner as they rely on them for so much more. Disability does not mean reduced quality of life unless there is no way for the bird to feed its self or can not get around at all. If you look a disabled budgie in the eye and really look, you can tell if there is a spark for life there or not.
  23. Pied chicks are super easy to see. You can tell a pied before its feathers even start to grow.. here is one I feel both your chicks are spangle at the moment, more feather showing though will get a better indication - they are definitely not pied though hehe.
  24. It may be too late, but i just wanted to add that chicks with disability i let mature and see how they go with the disability. If a chick can not live a happy life with a disability then its quality of life is considered. Many birds learn to compensate for things they are lacking. i would give the little guy a shot at life before ending it.
