How Tidy Are Your Hens?
Mine are pretty good in general. Some hens let me put nesting in and some dont. My lovely Missy who has just had her first two babies seems very unfussed (is there such a word?) about the fact I added shavings yesterday, she hasnt removed them and is doing fine. My messiest, dirtiest hen though, and I have no other like her, seems to have a very "wet" box no matter how many times she has bred, from the first clutch she had in Sept to the one she has just now. (She hasnt been breeding all that time, she has had a rest inbetween). Someone suggested to me that she may produce too much crop milk? I have no idea, anyway I have filled her box with all sorts of stuff to try to keep things cleaner, but she obsessively tosses everything out and still manages to have dirty babies. I have just resigned myself to gently, regularly checking and cleaning babies in her case, which seems to be working fine.

My First Cabinet Pair
Thanks all for the lovely comments Thank you Norm for giving me some kind of idea of what they will produce. A friend/breeder gave me Fluro for my birthday in January, I have just emailed her to see if she can let me know what his parents were, as Im curious now to know whether he is split to blue.

My First Cabinet Pair
Fluro and Missy paired up in the aviary and she laid two eggs, but I didnt want anymore clutches in the aviary. I brought them in, with the eggs. I dont think she sat well on those eggs, after being moved and working out her new home. A week later though, she started laying again. She has 6 eggs in total, but I am guessing 3 will hatch with any luck. Her first baby came yesterday. I was so pleased. She is being a very attentive mummy and Fluro is being a wonderful dad. I didnt choose to pair them up, so it will be very interesting to see what colourings the babies are. Fluro is a light green spangle and Missy is an opaline violet (though the pictures dont show her as being violet). Im not fussed about the babies colour, I like the idea they chose each other and Fluro is quite a nice type of bird. This is Fluro Fluro and Missy in the box Missy (I dont know why, but for some reason I dont have any aviary pics of her and I have aviary pics of most of my birds, so this isnt a great picture of her, taken in the breeding cabinet) And their first baby :hap:

Baby Pictures
I have different reactions. Some see just babies and ooh and aah over how cute they are. Some look at them and say "OMG Ive never seen a baby budgie, I didnt know they looked like THAT!!" lol

Baby Pictures
I find it amusing that we budgie lovers think they are so "cute" when they look like prehistoric little dinosaurs, and others would just find them ugly. Gorgeous piccies Misty :nest:

My First Bird Auction
Well I have spent my day productively thinking of names and have come up with them. I could put them all in a show cage one at a time, would still have bars in the pics, but be clearer than thru the holding cage they are in Oh, the names I have come up with, Holly- little TCB hen, Franklin - big opaline grey cock, Heaven - little rainbow hen, Rose - big TCB hen, Zeus - big rainbow cock and finally Buster the cinny green normal Thanks Jimmy, thats the idea Thanks Neat, I feel almost criminal for the price I paid for these birds, apart from Buster, I got each of the others for $10 ea

My First Bird Auction
Only problem with that is the flash issue, being that close you get a lot of flashback and the colours all wash out. Maybe if I drag them out into the kitchen again tomorrow morning, there will be enough natural light to do that without the flash, thanks for the idea MB

My First Bird Auction
Thanks for the comments I am really excited and cant focus at work cause I'm trying to figure out names! LOL I so cant wait for quarantine to be over so I can get some better pictures in the aviary So far I have Buster for the cinny green boy, Franklin for opaline grey cock (my son's choice), and Rose for my bigger TCB girl. So I have the smaller TCB and the "rainbow" pair to go......open to suggestions

My First Bird Auction
I went to my first bird auction last night. Well, a friend who knows breeders etc, took me along, but not before we spent the afternoon with her friend who is also a breeder. I didnt actually buy much at the auction, but it was very interesting. The three birds I really wanted were out of my price range, but oh well, one day While we visited the breeder, she showed us some of her birds she was getting rid of and explained why. I was quite excited by the young TCB hen there and she said the only reason she was getting rid of her was that she is split pied, so she cant predict the outcome of her babies. I think because I was so excited at the prospect of my first TCB, it spurred her on to see what else she had available. She sold me a lovely big hen (they are both a few months too young to breed yet, so lovely young girls), the reason for selling her big hen was her wing colour wasnt defined enough for show and she also found a nice grey cock for me, who is split to TCB, so when my girls are mature enough, I will have a partner for them I also got two "rainbow" birds. Yellow face clear clearwings, which are "badly marked" for show, but such pretty birds and the cock bird is a lovely size as well. The only bird I actually bought at the auction was a lovely light green cinnamon cock. I dont think the photos do him justice. I took them hurriedly before I left for work this morning, but he has a gorgeous head and is a lovely size and colour. I am so over the moon, particularly with the birds I got from the breeder, as I got them totally dirt cheap
