Remove the cocks and let the hens finish off their clutches by themselves? Is this what you mean? I am removing the hens as they finish up their clutches, so they dont go down again and not putting other hens back, so eventually they will all finish up. I have a lot more boys than girls actually and if I put all my boys in the other aviaries, they could end up overcrowded. With some clutches, I will remove the hens just before their babies fledge too, to stop the next round before it goes too far. The one particular hen I mentioned earlier has a foster baby and I was a bit worried if I let her go too early, the baby would get forgotten. I am nervous with fosters as I have seen one out too early and no parents were feeding it. I put it back in the box though, and it was fed for a couple more days in the box and then fledged and is doing fine.
  2. I look forward to the piccies.......I like olives, I only had one in my aviary and he passed away a few weeks ago

I have a big show type cock - grey spangle called Alaska. I am looking forward to getting him into a cabinet, but I have no idea who with yet haha. He is currently "paired up" with a lovely young cobalt opaline.......cock (Laughing out loud). I hope I can change his point of view! Hopefully, my couple of show types will give me some Cookies too......I dont want crumbs!

Teehee Smoo wont be having babies for a very long time.......she's only a baby herself and Im quite happy to say I bred her myself too But, she's not going anywhere. For a 2 month old, I am really happy with her development. I originally thought she was a he, but the way she bites, yells and her cere is whiter than I thought it was pink.........I have decided she is a she. Who knows though, at 2 months, that could change! haha

This is pretty interesting to me, because up until now, I have been colony breeding, but intend to change to cabinet breeding in the near future. Most of my pairs have picked their own partners and stayed with them pretty much whenever they have been in the breeding aviary. So, I guess what could possibly happen, is I could take a hen who has previously chosen her own partner and put her in a cabinet with a cock of my choosing and she could be territorial about who she breeds with and I might loose a cock........

It's great this shop cares about the health of the birds it buys etc. I am curious to know though, as macka said though, generally pet shops only pay about $5 for a budgie, do you happen to know how much this shop pays to the breeders for their birds?
  8. I too am sorry for your loss and grateful that you shared your new found knowledge. My birds usually finish their corn within a few hours, but on occasion, they havent eaten it all and I have just left it there for a couple of days. Thankfully I didnt have the luck you had and I have been fortunate enough to learn this lesson from you. I am glad they seem to be recovering and I hope they are all strong and healthy in no time at all

Thank you all. I am pretty pleased with my new kids. I'm a long way from even thinking about going down the show road, but I would like to breed a bigger bird, not smaller ones I am however, possibly becoming the latest convert to breeding cabinets now I have found a place to put them. I am going to use one of the aviaries for just cabinets and use the current big breeding aviary for a flight/resting aviary only. So I am going to start shutting all my boxes down, which will be a fun job in itself. The girl I want to shut down at the moment still has one foster baby in her nest box and she has laid 3 eggs . I can possibly find "someone" to take on her eggs, but eventually as I shut the last girl down, until I get my breeding cabinets, I expect I will have to sacrifice a few.
  10. Thats fantastic news Liv. I am glad all is well, well it WILL all be well in only a week or two and there is nothing serious wrong. I am also jealous that you had someone show you how to crop feed! I am still working on that one. Though I havent really had to do it yet, I so want to learn for when the need arises and I am pretty sure it will! Anyway, nice to hear your birds and family are all doing fine :bluebudgie:
  11. Congratulations Kaz! Your knowledge and dedication are a blessing to the site, well done, you deserve your promotion :wine :bluebudgie:

They were bought from a highly reputable breeder. They were inside for a couple of days and I put them out with a couple of babies I am keeping and a couple of "old boys" that are passed it, but that I love. Theyre not in main population, but I seriously doubt they would be carrying anything anyway.

Well, to buy a breeding box from a birdstore for a king parrot around here costs upwards of $80 and it looks manufactured and boring (chipboard type thing). The barrel was $40, and the stuff to mount it on we picked up cheap from a salvage yard. I am just lucky to have someone creative around I guess :bluebudgie:

Hi guys I just thought I would share a few pics of the birds I bought Friday night at our club meeting. We had been advised in the meeting before (last month) that a reputable breeder would be bringing along some birds for sale. So I put a few pennies aside and these are the guys I brought home with me. I chose five birds initially, but my partner wanted to buy a bird for me too, so he bought the sixth. So I came home with four lovely boys and two gorgeous girls. Of course, they already all have names. My friends all think Im insane because I have a name for every budgie I own, except for the babies that are for sale (Laughing out loud) Here is the picture of all six of them. Smoo, one of my babies is in the picture as she had come for a ride to the club as it was a night to show greywings, lacewings and fallows and I took her as my greywing, and she had some travel companions on the way home. On the front perch is Lola (light green,is that what yellow is classed as? recessive pied cinnamon hen). On the back perch from left to right is Smoo, the new love of my life Harrison (clearwing cock), George (normal blue cock), Boof (the green greywing cock my fiance bought), Cindy (also recessive pied cinny hen) and finally Carlos (skyblue spangle cock). Carlos in front, Cindy just behind, Harrison front bottom, Lola behind and George in the back top corner. Cindy and Lola George in front, Boof behind (oh my fiance also named him (Laughing out loud)) and I think Cindy in back corner The latest love of my life, I cant wait to breed him, though I have to for a few weeks yet.......Harrison. He has such a cute baby face, yet he is an adult cock And the last picture again of Harrison, cause I adore him, sitting next to Ellis one of my baby boys I hope you enjoyed my pics and I didnt go on too much! The pictures dont seem to be showing up as resized............
  17. Awwww that's such a cute piccie! Poor wee helpless thing
  18. Oh How disappointing the parents arent looking after it. Lucky you have been able to feed and foster Cant wait to see how it grows up!

Oh wow how horrible! I dont understand how someone could even have a potential buyer come to a place that is obviously not looked after :hap: Have you posted pics of your new boy yet? Have I missed them?

I have a small dish of shellgrit hanging on the side of my aviary and I notice the odd bird picking at it now and then, so on advice from someone who belongs to my budgie club, I have included this in the aviary and they have to seek it out if they want it. My parrots love chewing on chicken bones (my indoor birds). They have also shared roast dinners with me and lasagne/spaghetti. They dont get it all the time, just on the odd occasion, but they really love it.

She's a real honey Was she the only bird you found with your birdday money?
  23. Sunnie replied to **Liv**'s post in a topic in Budgie Pictures
She's gorgeous Liv. What a great choice and I think they will make a lovely couple. The president of my budgie club knows someone who is active in a club out north. I was supposed to go there yesterday and have lunch with them and see the northern lady's birds, but unfortunately, due to personal problems, it was cancelled. I am going to a meeting Friday night however, and I can ask for details of clubs out north if you like :hap: Lovely birthday present :D
  24. (Laughing out loud) funny story. Will NEVER happen again in a million years
  25. I have the same problem with a different type of bird. It used to be my hand but lately, he seems to want to get closer to my face and thats just not happening!!!
