I wish my almost 15 year old was interested in budgies - we actually bought our first breeding pairs for him a year or so ago thinking it would be a cool hobby - well he's out there skateboarding and guess who has the budgie hobby! Its all good - there is not a day goes by I'm not grateful for my feathered friends

Nice healthy thistles! I grow mine bigger than that, but then I have a lot of birds in my big aviary. I dont give them any other weeds than the thistles, although at the moment, I am throwing seed husks from my indoor birds in a particular patch and the grasses are starting to grow so I will be able to start cutting them back and giving them as well.

LOL I promise to be nice and I can be patient too teehee

Wow Norm!! I never actually thought of cultivating my thistles, I just leave them in my garden until they are a good size, then pull them up and throw the whole plant in. I think I will start trimming my weeds! LOL

Thanks Norm Well I was lucky enough to only pay $10 for him from a friend who is getting out of the hobby and he is a stunning looking boy. But if all he does is look pretty in my aviary, I dont mind for only $10 Anyway, I managed to snap a couple of pictures of Buster this morning, I was surprised he is usually very shy. I didnt take a new one of Gemma and the old one of her isnt very flattering, I will have to post another further down the track. They have their 2nd baby today He is actually a cinnamon green, but the pics dont show up the colouring well. And Gemma

I was excited a few weeks ago about my tcb cock and lutino hen, but as I know she is a prolific breeder and a good mum, I have to think he might be sterile or past it, though his ring says he is only 4 years old cause they have only produced clear eggs, so its back to the aviary to have a fly and rest. Anyway.......moving on. My little dom pied hen laid 6 eggs to one of my better cocks. He is a normal cinnamon green, not a huge bird but he has a nice head and I guess pairing them I was hoping the get green cinny dom pieds somewhere. She is a proven breeder and good mother, though her last partner was a smaller cock and mauve, they still had pretty babies, and quite a few with cinnamon through them as well, so I guess he was split. She had her first baby to this pairing yesterday. I wont take lots of baby pics, cause she is a feisty hen and yells at me every time I check in, so I only bother her once a day. I dont however have a decent picture of him, so I might just pull him out briefly to get a photo, cause there is no way he will let me take a picture in the cabinet. It's an old home made cabinet and the nest box perch faces the back of the cabinet and he spends most of his time sitting up there. Will post pics of the parents soon and update on the birth of babies and post piccies of the babies when theyre all hatched etc :hap:

Cant go wrong with that pair can you? Theyre so sweet and so are their babies. I have to ask Kaz, how do you get such great close up photos in a breeding cabinet with no flash. I try to stand as far away as I can and zoom to get my pics cause they dont show up well without flash inside.

My partner who bred budgies many many moons ago swears by thistles and I have given them to my birds and they love them. I only give them thistles from my own yard though, cause I "grow" them. I know no poison has been laid near them etc (my yard isnt full of thistles, just when one pops up, I dont pull it out until its a decent size now lol)
