Clearing The Air
Thanks guys, I got one PM that was "hidden" in nice ness, you know the kind, "In case you don't know... I am trying to help you," other stuff I got from outside this forum and just needed to rant. Sorry.

Clearing The Air
I just want to post this as a few people have asked why i have lost all interest in Budgies. This is not true and then i get accused of only moving into bigger birds for the money, which is also not true. Before I got Elmo I had put myself down on the waiting list (about August 2008) for a Quaker. I had fallen for these little rat bags and wanted to get one as a pet. I also got more and more into the breeding of birds. Now I love the breeding aspect, even when I complain about having no life as i have to go home and feed, water and clean the birds. Even when i lose a bird or they cost me money. i do like the breeding of them, but the more club meets I go to the more shows that I go to i started to notice that i had no interest in benching any of my birds, mutations and who should pair with who to get X does not interest me. My idea of pairing was who did kissy faces to the other in the aviary. So after a long conversation with a few people i decided not to rejoin my local club but to do the hands on day to day stuff with Pippi and my birds and he can do all the genetic stuff and be the one to show the birds. then for a challenge we thought about getting some bigger birds and I talked Pippi into the Quakers. Now in the researching for the Quakers and the buying of them I discovered green cheeks and these little guys have stolen my heart. I made the choice to get a pair and one pair has now turned to two as i got offer a pair for a good deal. Yes I am planning on scaling back the Budgies, this is not a money thing, this is not being mad at anyone thing and it is not an interest thing just more Pippi and i want to work on the grey mutation of the Budgie and get rid of everything else we have floating around and I just want to breed some pretty little things that make people smile when they come out of the box like one of my guys did at Xmas when given to my brother in laws mother. I know that I will never make money on birds so please don't accuse me of doing this, it's annoying and really s**ts me! Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to say this.

Perhaps There's Something In The Water?
Good to hear your other half is doing well. As for smokey, I know alot of people hate them (me being one of them) but maybe get him a mirror and put it in his cage every 2 or 3 days or on the days that you will be gone for a really long time, he may think he has a mate for a little bit. I use to do this with Harley when i had long days at work, he would spend all day talking to himself and then i would remove the mirror and it would get put away. Or of you have a big one then you can put it next to him cage that way he can't snuggle up to it but still see the bird in the cage next door. Not the best solution but maybe something to think about. Also does your husband have a private room? Some hospital will let you bring in small animals for a day visit for a few hours maybe both would like this, he would have to stay in his cage but he might like the new situation, but you would have to clear that with the hospital. Hope everything works out and things keep getting better for you *hugs*

New Birds
okay so I thought I would post picturesof my new additions. First off my suspended avairy (stand yet to be added) We used the pull out the bottom tray and am going to use it as a roof and blocked up the hole. breeding box in not in the right place or even the one I was thinking about getting but it will do them for now. Now first Snugglepot and Cuddlepie (Normal Green Cheeks) And Tommy & Joy (Yellow Sided Green Cheeks) I was trying to get a good picture of their tummy's but they where not having any of the big scary camera!

Bird With Injured Leg
Hmmm see most vets do sell it. Or you can pick it up at bird sales. I can see if I can get a bottle for you and then you just treat them to one drop on the back on the neck every three months.
-
Good Hens....
I love hens like that. I have one who is sooo calm and also is great as I can catch her from the avairy with her partner and give her a two or three day old chick and she will start producing crop milk within the day! Yours is very pretty! As for names, Angel or Sweets

Bleach For Cleaning
I use to use Bleach but then switched to the above. Howeve my vet still says that I should clean the cage about once every 3 - 6 months with a detol mix. (1 cap full of detol in a buket of REALLY hot water and let the tray and base soak) Since switching to this I have had no issues.

Weirdest Bird Ever
You mentioned his eye being lighter, so they look cloudy? I have had two birds go blind on me. Both times their balnce is off, when they find the food they just sit on the food dish all day and do not move. Also they are quiet as they can't see anything so quiet is a good thing (flight response). Also sometimes they are find then they will catch a bit of movement out of the area that they can see and BAM they flip. If you can I would get him to the vets or post come pictures of his feet and eyes (without a flash)

How Long?
Not always true, there are vets near me that put birds on a cocktail of drugs and then only quarantine for 2 weeks. However as a rule of thumb I know I go 4 weeks.

Do You Breed French Moult?
I have a 4 year old cock who is a french molt bird. He has raised two clutches with his parnter and none of the babies have shown any signs of being french molt birds.
-
Shaggy Budgie
So next Moult he will go back to looking normal? Sort of like a teenager in their "long hair rebbel stage" I think it looks cute but I to would be intrested if it ended up being something that he passed onto the chicks.

A Lesson I Had To Learn
okay so we had a plan we where people with a plan and all that went down the drain. The plan was the I would have all the Budgies and Pippi would have the two pairs of Quakers. Hmmmm so now I have all the Budgies, one pair of Green Cheeks and one pair of Quakers.... just wait how did that happen! It seems that the cafe below Pippi's flat had a small issue with the noise, and as they own the building we had to remove one pair of Quakers last night and they got moved into my breeding room. We hope the other pair will now settle and shut up but if not then I will have both pairs at my house and the green cheeks will go to Pippi as they make little to no noise (well so far anyway) So the plan is to sell the green pair we have (they are true aviary birds and hate everyone and everything) the Blue pair are really nice and talk to you. I am currently bidding on two separate cages/aviary’s on e-bay and knowing my luck I will end up with both and have to borrow money from Mum to pay for them until my Cheque clears. The Green pair are starting to look nice now that they are getting a little bit better of a diet (not that they are eating what they should be but we are working on it) We had an offer to buy them but the lady is TAS did not want to pay $158 to ship them there and then she needs to drive an hour and the door to door service cost $448 and there is no way she would pay that for them. So I am going to set them up and hopefully they can get their own avairy and will settle, if I put them around the side of the house then the dogs and people can not get to them and they might settle and not be so loud if that happens then I will keep them and try and get a round of babies out of them. If this does not happen then I have one pet store that will take them but I am going to be taking a really big hit with the cost! On another note, I hope I get one of the Aviary’s as I know that I can split it down one side and put a walk way in and I should be able to have two pairs of Green Cheeks in there. The two guys I have are great characters and have settled really well and now don't care about me changing their water and feed but I do really want to get them in a bigger cage. I think that over the next year I will do a Cull of my Budgies and outside of a few old fav's like Harley, Blue & Flame then I will get rid of the rest. I might keep Lemon and Lime as they are a cute old couple that I don't think will be around much longer and if anything happens to Lemon (she is going blind) I think Lime would just lay down and die as he started to do this when I pulled Lemon from the aviary and noticed that after about three days he had stopped eating and was just sitting in the corner so I had to pull him as well. It's funny, I was all up for Quakers, and now I am swinging more towards the green cheeks as they have a big bird personality in a little body. Yes there is not as much money in them but they are really cute! So all depends on what happens with Mork and Mindy (the Blue Quakers at Pippi's house) and if they are allowed to stay or not. If not them there will be big changes at my house and the Green Pair will have to go as I am sure that I will not be allowed to keep two pairs as the noise is going to be an issue. I never knew just how much noise these guys could make and I know people warned me but I really thought it could not be that bad! More fool me! So I have learnt that I am an impulse person and I don't do things in half’s and with birds I am going to have to learn to ease into things not jump into things. However in the end I am glad that Rex and Stumpy (the green Quakers) came into my life as they have taught me a lesson and I hope that I can improve their life (and their diet) maybe they will stay with me, maybe I am only to have them for a while but either way I think they are better off. *Edit on a side note, if anyone knows anyone who is looking for a pair or wants to talk to me about taking Rex and Stumpy on PM me, I might get to the stage where I might just let them go for free but I am not there yet!

Guess What I Am Getting On The Weekend?
okay so i was going to get my quakers today. So Pippi and I set off and I arrive at his house at 9am with a trailer to collect all his Budgies and boxes etc to come to my house. We get that all set up and then head out to get the first pair. Now in my defense, i have only every seen a few REALLY fat pet quakers and pictures and we get there and they are these little things. The guy is more of a breed for money then a breed for the love of it. I really wanted to say no I would not take them but I felt cornered and sort of in rescue mode so we came home with a green pair. The female is missing a few toes but she can perch really well and has breed in the past. Not 100% happy about the situation but okay with it. They also need fattening up as he feed them on a diet of sunflower seeds and well... that was about it! So we get them settled and head off to whoop whoop for the next pair. Well we get down there (a lot longer the the 1hr30min drive whereis promised me) and these birds are in great condition, they even talk and come up and talk to you through the cage. he had four pairs and was really good about which ones he thought we should take, what they are getting food wise, when they went down last and how many eggs they had. the birds looked 100 times better then the first place so we picked the blue pair, I really wanted one of the blue and green pairs but as I had bought the other pair that morning we did not have enough money on us nor do we really have the room. However he did have a pair of green cheeks for sale and guess what... I bought them *ducks flying objects* we did not have enough for them either but he said that we could post him the money tomorrow so going to do that first thing. He also has my dream cage for Elmo and only wants $150 for it, the nearest I have been able to find is $495! So I think I am going to call him and ask him to hold the cage for me for two weeks and I will go get it. I have also listed the first pair that I bought on petlink and hope I don't lose to much money on them and I am going to buy the other pair he has if he will also hold them for me. Oh and the other thing is that I got to talk to a pair of gang gangs up close today! WOW what great birds, a lot smaller then I thought they would be but still really nice. Anyway now I have to go research green cheeks to make sure I have everything for them.

How To Get Veggie In The Early
See this was my original plan but sometime I don't get home till 8pm and have missed the window and I HATE getting up a 5am to put the feed out for the birds and go back to bed for an hour or two so this helps me stay in bed a little bit longer

Elmo
A little vid of me trying to get Elmo to talk but like most men he does not do what he wants me to do! Stupid boy talked up a storm but as soon as the camera goes no he stops talking! However towards the end he starts to do a few things.

How To Get Veggie In The Early
I have been net surfing and I came across another forum that I have been chatting to people in. One guy is someone I met while in the states who breeds both Budgies and Quakers. He and his wife where kind enough to let me come and see their set up while I was over there and he told me a trick which I like and thought I would share. Most birds eat a lot just as the sun is coming up. I have noticed this with my birds they are all at the feeder when I go to wake them up in the morning. So if you want to get veggies in them then you have to get up before dawn and put the veggies in the aviary otherwise you miss the window (this is not to say that they only eat veggie at this time just that some breeders notice they eat more at this time) If you are not a morning person then here is a trick. Get frozen peas, carrots & Corn mix (my guys love it or you can look for an altnerative type the key here is that it has to be frozen). Make sure it is going to be a cool night (DO NOT do this if it is going to be a hot nights). And you have no hens sitting on egg (the breeder has in the past scared a hen off eggs). Serve out your frozen veggies straight from the freezer. Then using soft light or low light around midnight add the veggie dishes to the breeding cages and/or aviary. The veggies will slowly defrost over the remaining 5 or 6 hours and when the Budgies wake up they find a nice cool plate of veggie for them to eat. Last night was a cool night down here in Melbourne so I put my Veggies out at around midnight before I went to bed and got up today and outside of a few carrot bits left there was nothing! Normally my guys eat this stuff well but they have never eaten it this well. Will keep this as a winter thing or a cool night thing as don't want to run the risk of the veggies going off, but the bits of carrot that I cleaned out this morning where still a little below the outside temp so I am really liking this idea!

Guess What I Am Getting On The Weekend?
I find it really strange that you can have them in some states and not in others. I know someone on another board who put in a 15 page submission to the WA government to be able to keep her quaker after her work relocated her from Melbourne to Perth (I think it was Perth, somewhere in WA) she had had him for 15 years and did not want to give him up, after they said she could not bring him she quit her job as they said she had to relocate just so she could keep her parrot, now that is what I call true pet ownership! Will post pictures but it might take a few days as they will be at Pippi's house and we are picking up the second pair at 5pm so it will be late when we get them home. I range fom freaking out about the whole thing to being excited.
