  1. Rub some baby oil on the cere and the feet this will give the stuff you get from the petstore a jump start. I would treat all the perches, if you can get detol and soak the perches in that for about 20 mins with hot water then allow to dry overnight before replacing. Also clean the cage with detol and let dry before placing the bird back in. I would then spray the bird, cage and perches with the spray every few days and reapply Baby oil every day untill the mites go away. Keep itup for a week after all signs are gone to be on the safe side. If you can get Ivermtin from the vet then that would be the best option and the easiest but the other stuff works just as well just more time consuming.
  2. LOL yes would love to see the faces of people if you did that! Anyway back on topic, alot of the "pretty" pied birds are small that is because they where crossed with smaller birds to get the marking and they have not been able to increase the size and keep the markings (as far as I know)
  3. Your yellow crested one will swallow anything it thought was food!
  4. Most vets will also be able to teach you or if you know of a Budgie breeder near you. Call your local club hopefully someone will be willing to help. I personally like the tube better then the needle and so does my vet as he says there is less chance of you doing damage with a soft tube then a hard needle. Either way goodluck
  5. I can't see any issues with this, I know of some breeders who have crossed show types with pet types to get markings or colors intheir birds and then tried to keep those marking and colours while increasing the size. If you wanted her offspring tobe show type/quality then get a good show quality cock who has a good size to him and that should be fine. At the end of the day I could put a ring on one of my pet types and put them in a show cage and show them, they would not win but I could if I wanted to.
  6. I have some standard Budgie mix so will line the three cages I bring for you with that.
  7. If her father is a show type and her mother is a pet type then she is half/half. But at the end of the day unless you have rung her and are planning on showing her then I don't think it matters she is just a bigger then her sibblings.
  8. I find my guys would not touch it raw but the water they love an all end up with red heads.
  9. If you are going to boil for long periods of time you slow boil it like in a slow cooker if you raipdly boil it for 6 hours yes you would boil all the goodness out.
  10. I am going to have to put Blue in t a show cage over the week end and take lots of pictures. The guy said that the oldest chick was going to be a normal something i can't remember now and you can't get a normal out of a pied.
  11. The longer you boil it for the stronger the beet water is. I know someone who boils for like 6 hours and then strains it and the beets are pretty much mush at the end but the water is really rich.
  12. I know Kaz, if he had said that the first bird out of the first clutch was not Blues I would accept that it could be the case (however the first bub looks so much like her dad and he is the ONLY blue pied that I had I would be going with the thought she was his) but come on, some people. As for the leg ring I have no clue. I have the ring number record in my book, Pippi and I found him a few days ago and since then I have caught and wormed all my guys and checked off the leg ring numbers so I know which one it it. Can you have coded split rings? I checked his legs and can not see any damage to them so it's strange I also checked the bottom of the avairy but could not find the ring (not that I tought I was going to) I think I cam going to have to call him after that magic guy that kept getting out of locks and stuff... argh can't remember his name!
  13. A good idea with beat root is to wash it and then boil it skin and all for about 20 to 30 mins (or untill soft) drain off the beet water and keep. You can freeze this and give it to the birds in the middle of summer in a seperate water dish as they like it icey cold. It is also thought to help stop the growth of tumors. Take the remaining beet and peel and mush/grate and give to the birds or if you are like my house we eat it and they just get the water. My guys get it about 4 times a month/ once a week depending on the ability to get them. DO NOT feed them the canned stuff as it sends them nutty as it is full of sugar and salt. I freeze my water in an old ice cube tray (it will stain so be careful of that) then on a really hot day like today all my guys got an ice cube in a dish in their cage and a few in the avairy. Just be aware that it will stain everything I have had bright red perches and toys before. Also if you want to make a wooden toy for the bird drop the piece in the water towards the end of the cooking process and they stain red. Harley LOVES it when I do this and then spend all day destroying the wooden block that I put in his cage. My King Parrot likes it as well. Hope that helps.
  14. okay I have flame and Blue. Flame is a Lutino Hen and Blue is a cobalt pied See picture Last time around they had four bubs who look like this (this is also the order they where born in. This time around they had two bubs who are still in the jellybean stage just starting to get feathers born around the start of the month. Anyway this girl and her dad comes around to look at one of the pied guys I have from another nest and this guy know so much about birds blah blah blah and then tells me that the oldest chick in flames latest clutch can not be Blues :laughter: See this chick is going to be some such colour that I could not have gotten out of Blue. I am a little stumped but trying not to be rude I say that the pair has raised one clutch did not go back into the avairy before the second clutch and unless Flame stored another males sperm from before her original clutch then the babies are Blues. Well she started arguing with me that they are not and I must have switched eggs and something about trying to rip them off which I did not get at all.... Hmmm some people. Also side note one of my guys broke his leg ring off? I checked my records and I have this bird down as having a leg ring but he does not have one on now???? Anyone ever had one fall off before?
  15. Some of you will know about Angel my albino split with lace wing that I discovered was blind. the lady who makes my coffee for me each morning was asking me about my birds as she has always wanted one but id a bit worried about them making to much noise during the day. Angel makes little to no noise, my theory is why make noise when you can't see the animal that is about to attack you, so for him it is a defence thing. He is really pretty and she said she would take him on a month trial. I am going to lend her a cage and set it up for him and hopefully he can live out the remains of her life with her. So fingers crossed for the guy.
  16. Last time I was there he was talking about a paper he was writting so will check it out and see if it is the same as those above or different, if different will see if he will let me put it up here. He is great really good with the birds, my king parrot is in love with him even if he did take a blood sample from him!
  17. Well I lost Cloud today. I thought that might happen but then i thought that the crop feed that MB did might have helped him but no help I just wish i picked up his weight loss earlier and could have stopped him from spending all his time in the breeding box with the hen.
  18. hey that is my vet! I like him, thanks for posting.
  19. *hugs* well at least she said not to worry to much which will be hard as we know what you are like but if it was something major then she would have told you. I do hope she starts feeling better soon. Good luck with the exams.
  20. Thanks guys. It just seems I am not having the best of luck. As for the blind one first I put him/her in a cage with another Budgie and he/she showed no intrest in the hen then he/she started to molt and has been in molt since then. He/she is a great looking Budgie and I think would make someone a really pretty pet but I think I might need to find a home for him/her as I don't think the avairy is the right environment for him. As for the broken neck I have had two do this, one was a hen and one was the grey cock. I was a bit annoyed about this but both of them did it while in the bird room, I thought I might have mice but can't find any evidence of them and have put down bait and traps but caught nothing so no clue what happened. I guess it's just hard when you go out and purchase some base stock to start breeding from and they all end up with issues or dead it's really kind of sad. Also this the shemale, when I purchased it there was no evidence of he/she being blind in fact the first month that I had it out of quarrantine it flew around the avairy as if nothing was wrong so this has happened in the past few months grrrrrr
  21. ARGHHHH I buy four nice Budiges from a local breeder. (not cheap might I add) Dead - Egg got stuck Dead - Broke his neck Think he might be a she oh yeah and finally found out why he/she spends all day on the feed bowl, he/she is BLIND! Still happy in the avairy Add to that the other hen I lost, and then got cloud and Tifa out of their cage and Cloud is really not in a good way (thanks MB for crop feeding him today for me) hopefully he will pick up but grrrrr starting to feel over it!
  22. I went to my Dr on Thursday at 3.15pm and then found myself in surgery at 5.30pm. I get home today and found the amazing Pippi cleaning out my Budgie room and looking after all my birds for me! I just wanted to say a big thanks! *****hugs*****
  23. Just to let you know I had two tame guys Blue and Flame. I put them down to breed and now they act more like my avairy birds then tame ones. Blueuse to jump on my hand now he fligs himself around the cage when I change the water. Every now and then they are both a bit cuddly and their babies where great but they have bonded with each other and neither want much to do with me. I would not recommend breeding your tame guy if you want him to stay tame. But that is just my personal thoughts.
  24. Oh MB I am so sorry about what happened. I swear something must be in the air I know Pippi lost one the other da and I lost my grey hen all from freak accidents. *hugs*
  25. A lot of people get confused about this, I am a member of a fish board we can buy fish from overseas on an international e-bay and there is not an issue. It is Australian ebay that does not let you sell live animals but international ebay does allow it so sometime people think it's okay to do it and they just need the rules pointed out to them.
