  1. WOW you have been busy! Can't wait for more pictures and then the final pictures of the babies that you will get.
  2. The "sick" hen is the hen that we could never work out what was wrong with her (we are talking multiple vet visits and $100's in tests). When she went into condition the vet said to pair her with a cock I would not mind losing (if he too became sick) and see what happened. They did everything right but she did not lay an egg and has now gone out of condition so the nest box will be removed. The cock has never shown any signs of sickness so the vet and I have concluded that whatever is wrong with Ashley is not passed on, they will be quarantined together and monitored. If she goes back into condition then they will be given the breeding box again but if not they will be back in the aviary in about a months time. I would like to get chicks out of her to see if her poo issues are transferred to them or if it is just something that she does and is nothing more then her body being different from other birds. Everything I have done with her has been under vet supervision and instructions. As for the hen that laid the soft-shelled eggs, I was going to rest her and give her heat but then she laid two normal eggs so I left her just added some more heat to the cage and also upped her calcium intake. I only found the eggs kicked out when I topped up water today and if she is not showing signs of egg bum then her nest box will be removed tonight and both her and her cock given a good rest before joining the aviary. I was not planning on breeding from these guys but within a few hours of getting her home she had laid an egg so have allowed her to get it out of her system (so to speak) I have also consulted with my vet in regards to her. I do value your opinion and am not dismissing it in any way just wanted to give you more info as to why I had made the choices that I have made.
  3. Chrissy, personally if he looks okay and then I would just let him go for the time being and know that you have learn a lesson and been lucky. If you can stop them before the next round that might be a good idea as this will give him a good rest up. I have two birds that look pretty much the same, caught one, looked at the leg ring and went"yes that's her" her put down and then realised that I had just looked at the colour of the leg ring not what was written on it and put a hen that was FAR FAR to young to go down. The reason is that the breeder had put a split ring on her which is the same colour as the other hens leg ring, I got so confused but I learnt from my mistake and you grow as a breeder.
  4. Well my first lot of Bubs are ready to go their new homes this weekend *sob* As for the rest I am having some issues. Box One - Ashley & Brandon - she was my sick bird that the vet said to pair and see what happens, so far lots is happening but no eggs has been produced. She has now gone out of condition. Box two - The new pair I got from an old strange man she laid two soft-shelled eggs then two hard shelled/normal eggs which both got kicked out of the nest, she is going back to lay now. Box three - Lucky and unnamed cock - she is young he is old not much seems to be going on Box four - Kaja and DQ (pet type) She is sitting on 9 eggs, candled them and looks like 5 are going to have chicks. She was also sitting on the egg that came from the Hen I lost a few weeks back but when I candled it did not seem viable and then she kicked it out of the nest. Box five - Unnamed pair - She spends all her time in the nest box but no eggs so far Box six - Mikey and unnamed hen - she laid an egg but kicked it out now almost a week later she is showing signs of laying again. Box seven - Harley and Grey - He is my 8 year old pet cock and she is a BIG 5 year old hen who he picked out to be his girl friend. They are sitting on 5 all look to be viable (I was really happy when he picked her as the breeder I got her from said that she was a great mum but had low egg counts and never really laid more then 4 or 5 eggs) Box eight - Flame and Blue (pet type) back down for the second round, straight in the nest box expecting eggs any day Box nine - Cloud and Pretty/Tifa (pet type) put them down and took her about 3 seconds to discover the nest box and has not come out since. Box ten - Lemon and Lime - again an older pair, she is my ground layer and pippi lent me this great breeding box for her but she can't decide if she should lay in the bottom of it or the nest box! Just going to give her time and space and see what happens from there. Holding cage one - unnamed grey cock and Angel (albino split with lace wing) both going through shocking molt so on molt aid as neither of them can fly it is that bad! Holding cage two - Boof and the babies. Boof is doing a great foster dad role. He does not want to feed the chicks but will if they really push him he will, so while they wait to go to their new homes they are sharing a home with him. Quarantine cage one - Yellow face grey cock and yellow face pied cock of Pippi's that he made me buy for him as his other half would have killed him! He might have to fight me for the yellow face grey as he is a really NICE bird! So that is all my birds, I have a few in the aviary but other then that it is pretty much it. My sister ripped out her bathroom yesterday so I took the vanity/bench unit and put it in the Bird Room, this gave me a place to put the breeding cages on for cages 8 - 10 and also a bunch of shelves and cupboards to put all my other stuff in. Will try and take pictures of it tonight for you. So yeah that is my update.
  5. A friend of mine and I went around and around in circles trying to find out how old one of her's was (she is also in the states) finally gave up and rang the breeder and he had just put legg bands on to identify different chicks and does not apy attention to colour and or year which is annoying but may also be the case with you.
  6. Oh poor Ozzie! You are really not having a good luck with the Budgies are you. Will keep an eye out for another show spangle for you and if there is anything I can do let me know.
  7. *points upwards* do as they said or take to a avian vet (make sure it is an avian vet as most vets have no clue what to do with a Budgie)
  8. She Liv I use to do this but got told off by other budgie breeders with the lettuce thing. They say that ir is really bad for Budgies and can make them really ill so I stopped doing this when I travel my Budgies. But I know alot of people who do this is got confused. I will try and take a photo of my travel box tonight (I like Melbournebusiges better) so you can get the idea. I think neat also has a really nice one if memory serves me correct.
  9. Birds can go upto 6 weeks without drinking water so as long as you have seed in there for them and offer them water before you lock them up in their travel cages then you should be fine. Most airlines have cages that you can use or you can purchase on, normally they are small and dark placing seed on the floor means they don't have to look for it and no water in the cage means that you don't have to worry about it spilling and getting everywhere. Some of the show breeders might be able to give you more information as they sometimes travel birds acorss country for shows etc. Good luck with the move.
  10. MB my vet is normally very good at selling stuff over the counter without seeing a bird if you explain the situation.
  11. I would go yellow face grey spangle but I suck at these things so just a guess
  12. Aviary is outside, MB thanks for the offer but I have a bunch of rat and snake wire left over from the bird room so going to use that.
  13. Very nice and like her dad as well!
  14. Yeah I have to create a better base for my aviary but then I am thinking of changing it around so going to put bait/traps up on the roof of my aviary. I know they can't get in the bird room so that is fine, however Elmo killed a mouse in there the other day so going to have another check.
  15. Oh you guys don't know what you are missing! Think Dawsons Creek but finding out all the stuff that goes on in the back ground! The tag line was Actors playing Actors playing Actors. It'a all about these group of actors who are on a weekly soap/teen program like Buffy, Dawsons etc... and how they interact and get along and relationships and it's great so addictive. the eps are only 20 mins long and there was only 17 of them, I got through 13 last night before I had to crash but going to watch the rest tonight LOVE IT!
  16. MB if your kids try and eat my Budgies then maybe they will have to hide from the hockey stick!
  17. Outside having a smoke and i see this rat running along the top of the fence from the aviary, so i grab the hockey stick, creep close to the fence and when it is close BANG. I thought I would be lucky to knock the fence and scare him but I got him instead, when he tried to make a run for it I beat him to death. Strange thing is I feel really bad but it was sort of fun. I then had to bury him cause I felt so bad about it, but hey one rat down!
  18. Anyone remember this show? I am addicted! I have just watched 10 episodes back to back and waiting for the 11th to download how do I know I am not getting any sleep tonight!
  19. I like giving you hugs more then mummy cause you're all soft like a giant pillow only in the shape of a person. Hmmmm i think he was saying I was fat!
  20. Yeah but if you met him in a dark alley you would serious think twice and that and he's in the navy and his nick name and geez scared the c**p out of me the first time I met him! (No offence to your OH but dude he is large and navy like and well scarey!)
  21. okay so I had a plan I was a women with a plan, I catch her, I catch her mate and I move them into the hospital cage and I go to clean the cage and the box and I find two nice hard normal looking eggs I did not check the nest box on Monday and well she must have laid one then and one today. She seems alot better in herself so I put her back with her eggs but moved the heat lamp so that part of the cage is warm (opposite end to the nest box as I don't want the egg to dry out) and put the cage near the water thing I have that will keep humity in the air. Should I foster her egg out to another pair (both my pairs that are sitting on eggs have 7 eggs each so might have to hit up MB or pippi for a foster mum) or should i leave her on them and let her ride this out. She really does seem 75% better and since she laid two normal eggs maybe it was just a bad run for the first two. okay I am confused going to go do some googling.
  22. I would vote for going with your OH, it will take a few weeks to fight it through ebay anyway and your OH scares me and I know him!
  23. I would assume that it was for the lot as well not per sheet. I would say he is just trying to screw you for some money!
  24. It could be because he remembers being grabbed. I know a bird who you can do anything with as long as you don't touch him with your hand as it freaks him out. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Keep at it.
