  1. Mum and Dad where not even in the cage (as they are hand tamed to a point) they get free flight time when I am checking the cages, I open their cage and they fly around the breeding room and go and talk to harley and raid the treat box on my desk so I know he left on this own accord. As for age he was hatched on the 28/8 so he is getting near the 4 week old mark. yeah I think I will re jig stuff tonight and move them inside so we can play with the pretty babies! :hap:
  2. I checked my guys today and found Head Case on the bottom of the cage with no way to get back in the nest box. He was a little cold but Daddy was trying to look after him so that was good. So I put him back in the nest box, check on the other guys and I hear this thud, yeah you guessed it Head Case had jumped out of the nest box again. So now I am wondering what I should do. Should I clean up another cage and put an open nest box in the bottom so they can come in and out? These are my pet types and I am planning on hand taming them before they go to their new owners so was planning on bringing them inside with their parents to that Anna and I can handle them each night. Suggestions?
  3. One of my sickies has gone into molt and looks a little like Kaz's. I always feel so sorry for them however with Harley I love it when he molts as it is about the only time I am allowed to touch him without him biting me! He loves getting his head scartched! :hap:
  4. Spawn! Think, dirty nappies, night time feeding, all the illness that come with a baby. Where is the new one going to sleep, streach marks, sore feet, heck not being able to see you feet for a large period of time! Then there will be one child with the middle child symdrone, in fighting, the boys ganging up on the girl. Not to mention all the other things that you still have to look forward to like more broken bones, three in school, the extra cost of that. Not being able to take friends of your child out with you as your whole back seat will be full! Then there is going to be the "But I want a Puppy mum" and you already have two and if you get one for one of them you end up with three more dogs or more rabbits or rats or more birds.... okay the more bird thing is not so bad. Hmmmm what else, oh yeah if one gets sick then all of them get sick so now you have three kids all screaming more you which might not seem like alot more then two but it is. Did that help honey? You asked!
  5. Oh the poor pet type babies I am sure they are feeling very short comparied to the show type!
  6. Poor baby, that must be so annoying for him! Glad he is doing better.
  7. MB if you are going via a pet shop can I come Pretty pictures of pretty birds. Can I ask where you got your breeding box from?
  8. Last night all *** broke lose in the avairy and we went out and found an owl hanging onto the side. I convinced him to leave (by way of a hockey stick and a little push) but he came back and sat on the fence. My sister said they hate flashes of light so she grabbed my camera and took like 100 pictures of him and still he did not budge finally i rocked the fence and he flew away and I have not seen him since but have been keeping a watch out for him. So now I am worried, should I empty my avairy for a few days and lock everyone up tight in the breeding room, it will be crowed but I could do it???? So should I not be worried? Oh some of the flashing in the owls face came up with pictures (thanks to auto focus)
  9. After reading all of these posts I am feeling the need to gind up some nuts and add them to the Budgie mix. Thanks for posting
  10. Does this mean that I got it right? *does a happy dance and waits for Kaz to come and tell me I am wrong*
  11. I am going to go with Cock but then I aways get these wrong so will wait for someone else to you you. If he a pied? More pictures of the rest of his body would be nice.
  12. Oh we also need photos of the differnt size eggs and chicks at the same age but different types cause that would be intresting!
  13. I find it strange with the RSPCA there seems to be no standard. My guys where in a large patio cage under cover in an inbuilt patio area and I had to block in part of their cage. However as you have said you have called them over others and have gotten little to no respose. I think it comes down to a matter of if there is an inspector that wants to deal with birds which is said.
  14. Hopping the fence sounds like a good idea but at the end of the day it is stealing and you may end up in trouble so going to ask you not to do that please. The flyer Idea sounds good. However I think (because I got inspected by the RSPCA and they told me I had to) that any ouside cage has to have at least part of the roof and one side enclosed. When I had my guys on the patio in my large cage I was told that I had to either get a new cage or build a cap for one end which I did. Ring the RSPCA, but the only issue there is that if they take the birds they may get put down. The other option is the Parrot centre.. will try and find the link for you. Put a noise complaint into the council at least they might be asked to cover the birds during the night to reduce noise. I hate seeing animals like this.
  15. SW I think the reason they said to smash the egg was that it was 100% external or at the very least 95% external so you are removing the weight that is pulling the membrane/uterus down and out. I guess when only a small amount is still attached then leaving that small amount and attempting to soak/lube the remaing egg shell off is what they are trying to do. I guess it will always be one of those things that I am going to wonder what would have happened if I had done X.
  16. okay not the best picture but you get the idea. Infront is a show type/english Budgie In back is a bush Budgie Bush Budgies (MB's Pair) You can also see the difference in the head shape
  17. Smart Idea Liv. I found one for sale but it was $200 and same idea as the link I posted and I am not going to pay that for something I can Build under $100 but it does give me an idea. I have a friend who is great with building things (he is a builder by trade and helped me with my breeding room) maybe see how much it will cost for him to build them and see how cheap we can make them so if anyone is close to me and wants one I will see if I can do them as cheap as possible. He is also going to have a look at a breeding Box Pippi and I picked up over the weekend and see about making them if he can I am going to get him to make me a set of about 10 and phase my cages out I think....
  18. *hugs* I lost my Nanna a few weeks back and I know how hard it is. Just make sure you don't push yourself and make some time for you as you're going to need it. If you ever need anything let me know.
  19. *Looking for the pictures*
  20. Well Fiji and Mozzie are going for it like rabbits and not an egg in sight. Harley and Grey seem unintrested in each other and then BAM three eggs so go figure.
  21. Thanks Kaz all the ones I had seen had the light under the floor so never thought of hanging one. Hmmm now more research needed but yours looks sweet.
  22. Neat I did not think of this and I am not sure it would have helped. The egg was visable and had pulled the membrane out of her with it. Hence why my vet said she was not egg bound but prolapsed.
  23. My Dad and I are planning on making one when a friend of him gave him a web address. These are great plans and this is what we are going to use to make mine. Enjoy http://www.javafinch.com/buildhospital/hospitalndx.html
  24. So now I am kicking myself. See my first reaction was to get the Hen to the vet and Pippi and I went down the to Emergency Vet hospital as my avian vet was not open. $243.00 later I get my hen back and she died about 2 hours after that. Now they where very nice but they did the wrong thing, after researching and talking to long time breeders what should have happened and what happened are two separate things. Jock my local Pet Store owner and LONG time breeder (he was the president of the Mountian club for around 6 years) said that if something like that happens again and no avian vet is open then to bring the bird to him, one it would have cost me nothing and two I might have been able to save the hen. So some more info for you all. When I found her with the egg half out Pippi said that it was prolapsed (he was right, the vet said she was egg bound), she was still very bright, not actively bleeding (however blood was present but it was dried on the egg and her backside). When caught she was chirping and moving around a lot. The Vet removed the egg intact and in the process ripped the membrane which caused more bleeding and when I got her back she was limp and not moving. They gave her some pain killers and some antibiotics but they had not completely stopped the blood flow however it had clotted by the time I got home. I placed her in a makeshift hospital cage with a warm light and within 2 hours she was dead. Now after internet research, talking to Jock and a call to my vet today what should have happened was The egg should have been smashed and all that could be removed should be removed. The small amount that was sticking to the membrane should have been left with lubrication added to the area and replaced into the body. An Antibiotic flushing should have been given and then some injections, warmth and monitoring. Now I would not recommend anyone to do this by themselves. My vet said that as long as she was 'active and alert' she could have waiting till he opened the next day (12 - 24 hours is the maximum you would leave a hen like this and only if there is no other choice) All I know now is that I am kicking myself over the wrong decision, I know I made the best decision with the information available to me but I will next time either wait for the vet or get the budgie to see Jock or Ivan (as their info aligned with the vets info) I just feel like I have failed the hen but I know that was best with the information available to me at the time but still feels like a kick in the guts.
  25. Ozzie has to fill an egg as I want one of his babies!
