Little Drowned Rats!
While watering the other pets this morning the budgies were harassing me for a bath- its been too cold for the last week for them to have one, so I sprayed some water in a corner of the aviary and they all came rushing over to play in the water. Here is the result (at this point I took the water away as they were having too much fun!!) he turned into a tiel!!

Natural Conditioning..
Hey Una.. do you have more problems with the heat and humidity affecting your birds- being a better climate for bacteria and stuff??

Show Birds
Hi there- real pretty birds but they seem to me to be 'pet type' or normal birds with leg rings for means of identification, not actual 'show bird' type. Meadow and Sunflower seem to be closest to 'show type' birds. Joinging a club will give you access to registered leg rings and also give you alot of information.

Look Who Came To Have A Look At My Breeders Today
Wow he is gorgeous, good luck relocating him I have also heard lime or sump oil around the perimeter of house or area keeps snakes out, as long as they aren't already in that area hiding!!

Oh Jealousy
the middle picture looks like the budgie is saying "nope, not looking-you are so not going to be there when I open my eyes" and the Weiro has a sad puppy look "I only want to be your friend!!"

Aww Scratch!
This little sook hasn't grown out of it yet- I can still win him over with a good scratch under his cheeks and round his head. His older friend knows what he likes (this was taken Dec Jan) Today- I need 3 hands for this!! 1 for camera, 1 to scratch and 1 for him to sit on!! OH That felt good! Hmm that made me a little sleepy These little ones fledged the other day- Brother and sister Albinos- also had cinnamon mauve, and mauve spangle Rec pied (Girl and boy)

Breeding My Female
I'm not sure of the birds you are talking about but depending on what colours/markings they are carrying, the next clutch could be the same or totally different. If the birds are carrying lots of markings- hidden or showing- it means the more combinations you can have and more likely to be different next year.

Despotting
Thanks Daz- all fixed now- must have buggered up the resizing when I loaded them. What is "aver sixed"? (Laughing out loud) :ausb:

Despotting
Am I going to start showing?? Not after my little effort today!! Its so hard to not hold onto the head and then not getting chunks taken out, spose I just need to handle them more!. Big congrats to people that do that every week to show at the meetings!! I bow to you I can see why you do it over a couple of days. Also found that a line of birds I have no matter how feral, love their heads and cheeks scratched then remember its me doing it and pretend they hated it.

Tumours In Budgies
Just an article I read a while back- unfortunatley too late for a bird I had to put down just previous(the reason I was searching on this topic.) I haven't tried it but it can't hurt if there is nothing else to do. The only thing is I'm not sure how much water vs how much beets. As budgerigars are prone to tumours and cancer, a good mixture to sometimes rid the system of the problem, is a prolonged course of beetroot fluid in the drinker in place of usual water. Boil freshly picked beet in water, with no additives, and drain off the fluid, and bottle it, retaining it in the fridge for further use. A six week course will sometimes rid the problem. It is perhaps a good precaution to give cooled, boiled water to your birds at all times.

Despotting
well that was easy...NOT!!!! Four fingers, a heap of patience, one tail(dont ask!) and a bit of frustration later. I now realise knowing which feathers you need and getting them, then making them stay in the proper place is another thing!! Any way thought I'd show pics of my mess :yellowhead: this is one of those whoops. They looked alright(not good but okay) when I did it but the two spots like to stick together (hairspray?? :ausb: ) *moulting badly so VERY spiky also whats the go with having blue and white cheek patch on one side/blue on the other? allowed? Moderator’s Message to user Pictures changed to links as they are over sized. Max 450 x 450 pixels

Despotting
okay I know this isn't easy over the computer but for those people (ME!!) who are miles away from civilisation (sometimes it feels that way!!) How do you go about choosing even spots to keep. Certain area, ...how many- 2 good ones plus one near cheekpatch? These birds aren't birds you would put on the showbench but I'm using them for picture purposes(had them for years). If anyone could put some feedback onto here about despotting so I can learn and practice. Same hen- keep spots 1&2 or would you choose another? This guy usually has a few more spots to choose from- just 1&2 again? or would you pick one further up Alot of fleccking I know But when a bird has alot of spots how do you go about picking them? Would you take all 3 or 1&2 or 1&3 or other spots Cheers

Eucalytus Leave's Better Than Fruit & Vegies
There are some trees that look like eucalypts but arent. Crush the leaves up with your fingers you can usually smell it. Mine don't like salmon gums which are everywhere here but the more 'normal' eucalypt/gums they love. Also get saltbush, seeding bushes, spinifex. The wild mulga parrots love a certain type of bush towards the end of the year- still not sure why its a weird spiky bush!!

Strange Budgie....
did we sort anything out on this bird? It had me thinking again today (Laughing out loud)!! Green & yellow = normal yellow series bird + grey (blue series??) hhmmm this bird is confused!! the wing markings look to be black still. Dominant pied...... halfsider??

A Couple Of First Times!
Well a couple of firsts for me- first baby spangles: 2 light green spangles, 1 opaline mum is a light grey opaline spangle cinnamon dad is light green greywing. (mum) Also I always said no recessive pieds but this little spunk: came to me through a friend one day and has settled in well it wasn't until I went away that his womanising ways showed up!! Anyhoo he has teamed up with my albino hen and produced 4 chicks, oldest has some recessive markings coming through, second has plum eyes 2 youngest have pink eyes so first recessives and first ino's. Not much to see yet!!

Routine Meds
What do you routinely give your aviary birds? or while in quarantine? I'm hearing more and more people having problems with certain virus/bacterial problems. Also some birds no matter if quarantined or not do not show signs of illness but could be carrying it into your flock at a later stage. Coccivet, megabac and plenty of others? how when where and why?? cheers

I Bought An Aviary Today

Getting Noticed
Could you pull the older chicks out when they're due for a feed, wait til the mum has fed the younger ones then add the older ones after? Its a bit of mucking about for the first bit but once she and the baby have it worked out they should be fine. The older ones won't miss out as they will squark for the missed feed once they get back.
