Daz, what I think is: I think you need to come back to my place and fix up my aviaries with your great ideas!
  2. I guess it's just what they're used to. I guess the old adage goes true for budgies as well "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Probably when you get some different species & they put space between themselves and the budgies, the budgies will get a bit more adventurous & will "check out" this new environment that the new birds enjoy. damn! why does Boris always go for the ornament hutch when I'm on the computer BORIS!!! LEAVE THAT ALONE!!! damn . . .
  3. Or be a chicken and chase after them flapping your 'wings'!
  4. Darn it!!! Does it matter how visual the lacewing is? I have 2 lacewing white hen's that are only very lightly visual lacewing.
  5. I love your set up Una! Bourkes, Turqs, Kakariki, Lorikeets & Red Rumps should be fine with budgies. Although the grass parrots might get picked on by the budgies if you try and breed them in the aviary. Red Rumps, even though a grass parrot are big enough that the budgies shouldn't worry them.

Nerwen I just use a home brand eucalyptus disinfectant, I dilute about a third of a 2 litre bottle into a bucket of water. NappySan is an excellent disinfectant too. I actually do nappysan first then redo it with the home brand disinfectant. I am just being over cautious though.

You have done a fantastic job there Daz, maybe you should give up your regular job & take on aviary/breeder cage making! I'd hire you! Sorry to hear about Snowy, hopefully someone nice has found her.
  8. He is dominant (in my dad's language harlequin).
  9. Okay, so if any males are born, then they'll be split to lacewing right? Then all I have to do is mate any males from this pairing to a lutino or albino hen and I should get lacewing males? Am I right? - this hen is the only good lacewing I have left so it has to be a lutino or an albino.
  10. 8 actually, the babies are leaning on one. The hen is rather small - I am keeping a close eye on her & this is her first clutch.
  11. I have bred another albino with this male & got 2 lutino & 1 opaline green hen. This is the parents: This is the baby:
  12. Only found out they had babies by accident. I knew they had eggs but didn't know they had hatched. They have 3 babies. Mum is a lacewing yellow & dad is a Lutino. Can anyone tell me what the chances of getting lacewing males out of these babies? These are the parents: 3 Babies:
  13. We now hve 4 babies as of today. The 4th baby is hiding under the wing of the one higher up in the picture.
  14. You know, your boy could have stage fright - might not want to 'perform' to an audience.
  15. I lost a budgie once to a butcher bird. It was the result of a toy/wheel on the side of the wire, the budgie got stuck & the butcher bird took his opportunity to tear a hole in the budgie & eat some of his insides. We saw a butcher bird on top of Boris' cage on the back verandah last week. Scared the daylights out of us as the bird really had to want to get onto the verandah to even see Boris (could hear her a mile away (Laughing out loud)). I have found that the more we encourage magpies (they have no interest in our birds), rosella's, king parrots, lorikeets etc the less we see of the butcher birds. Don't honestly know why but it is true of our situation, it might not work for everyone though.
  16. Goodo! Is he mating yet?
  17. Have to say about 2/3 of my Lutino's are boys. With the Albino's I have trouble breeding boys. Weird! Oh and it is hard to determine age of Ino's exept via Iris Ring as Nerwen said. Don't be fooled by the bite test either, my boys for the most part bite harder than the girls.
  18. I agree with you Terri.
  19. No, but that won't distract him all the time.
  20. I found in my aviary where Junior Boss is, he actually influences alot of the other birds! I go in there and he'd fly up to me, land on me or just give me a kiss & the others want to go where he goes. I had a young alnino land on my shoulder last week after following Junior & he looked as shocked as I did! Maybe keep Beano away from the others for 3 months. Some vets recommend a 3 month quarantine period. That would give you heaps of bonding time.
  21. You are getting him really young, he will tame down. Just let him make all the moves, I've found that works best.
  22. Hi Karen! Welcome! It's nice to see yet another great person joining the forum (you have to be nice with a name like that!) (Laughing out loud)!!
  23. I have never had a pet tiel, but Sal & Jon have them as pets along with their budgies & you know their great stories. Don't forget Scully now has a pair of them too & she just adores them! What I know is they aren't a 'cuddle up and fall asleep tucked into you' type of bird, but they are extremely fun & entertaining & keep you on your toes with their antics. Oh, and they (Sal & Jon) have a young hen available for sale right now.
  24. This is very exciting news Boomboom! I 'accidentally' found myself in a huge pet shop today - honestly! the places my car likes to take me! Anyways, I spotted 3 I wanted - I managed to restrain myself though. Next birds to buy Boomboom, Kakariki! They are the best pet & are exceedingly cute & funny!
