Jake's Beak
I completely agree, also keep an eye on his weight to make sure he isn't dropping due to the injury, good luck and keep us updated.

Bg And Lady
I agree with Kaz, August is right around the corner just next month I think that BG should be retired and let him live the rest of his life without you or him worrying about the stress of him getting ill. These are my thoughts.

Going On Holidays
I had Merlin at my in-laws for 2 weeks, I don't want to do that again, they took good care of him but he came back with respiratory irritation from whatever they used in their house, I was glad when we went on vacation last time that I had a trustworthy pet sitter that took care of him at our house.

Frequent Moulting
well I know in some type of animals that shedding is due to the daylight hours, I am not sure about birds, I know it is more temperature controlled but that is why I was asking maybe keep him covered for a full 10-11 hours and see if that helps it out since that is what is recommended anyways for night time hours.

Going On Holidays
Yes food is a major concern, if you had someone come every 2nd day and change the food and water that would be perfect. I know when I fill Merlin's seed in the morning by evening the empty husks have already covered the seeds on the bottom. As for covering, don't completely cover them just on the 3 sides and 1/2 way so they feel safe at night especially if you cover them all the time at night and it keeps them from getting a draft.

Rats
oh boy, good luck, I am sorry to hear about the losses

Going On Holidays
I personally have not left Merlin for more then 3 days that to me is the max and I leave him 2 seed bowls and 2 water bowls, it worries me because there is no one there to blow the husks off and they can starve, also I leave music on low and I keep the cage covered on 3 sides to make him feel safe during the night.

Here is the float they made up with my husband's trailer they actually put more stuff on it later in the morning but there are kids all over it and I don't feel comfortable posting pictures of other families kids on the internet without their permission. The kids had a great time and last night the 5th, we had about 5 families come over for swimming, fireworks, drinking and s'mores it was a blast everyone went home around midnight

Anyone Ever Had A Bird Fall Off Their Perch
Pretty was more apt to have "night frights" and fall off the perch, Merlin has never had them that I am aware of.
