I did read that that birds have never been domesticated so they go right back to their wild roots unlike your typical dog and cat. That is a wonderful cage the same thing I have and I suggest to make them feel safer to put a sheet across the back so they don't feel open back there it will help them out greatly. Pretty didn't make a peep for almost 4 months he was very quiet and a male. You have hens they tend to be quieter then your male budgies so don't expect them to be too loud that is the nice thing about them. I believe that within a month you will find that they will settle in nicely. Since they are older birds work with them with your voice and not your hands, put your face up to the cage and offer a bit of millet or put the millet there and walk away. You will need to use the food route and patience with these ladies but they will come around. Read my taming tips in the FAQ's, it goes through how I tamed Pretty who was a 3 month old pet shop budgie with no human interaction. Keep us updated and ask question but lastly dont' give up.

do you have a picture of your set-up with the 6 nesting boxes in there? Even with the lovebirds gone colony breeding can have unwanted results, a picture would help others here to ensure your set-up is okay.
