Off To My Favourite Budgie Breeder Today
Oh i envy you.. I wish i had a breeder close to me that i could go visit.. if ever i want any new birds it means an aeroplane flight for them or a 12 hour drive on a rough dirt track although i have done that before and the birds seemed to love it Apple, Munch and Migs mum and dad was in the lot that made the car trip up the cape :hap: actually they did it on the front seat of a big fuel truck :hap: Make sure you post pictures of you new fids when you get a chance, its not possible for you to visit without bringing back at least one

That is a nifty idea indeed, although what kinds of containers come with bottoms like that? or is it designed specifically for this purpose?

Wing Clipping
My three terrors inside, Apple, Mig and Munchkin have got their wings clipped, simply because they don't live in their cage and its only used for sleep or whenever they feel they want time out. Other than that the lounge room is their cage and i have big nasty ceiling fans that HAVE to be on or we would all cook and die of heat exhaustion I have heard about the place that Budgies and ceiling fans DONT MIX .. I clipped Mig and Munchys wings but for some reason couldn't bring myself to clip Apples so got the vet to do it... And wasn't that a huge mistake He looks weird with stumpy little wings although the vet clipped them exactly how id done the other two, Apple just seems to have stumpy wings. I was wondering if this could have been apart of the reason that took him months and months to learn to fly

Safe Woods
doing a little of my own research and i found this and thought id post it here too... How to color wood: It is possible to use regular, unsweetened Kool-Aid® to dye wood. Using Kool-Aid® as a colorant results in lightly, almost pastel colored wood. It is usually easiest to use a large, shallow pan which allows for soaking of the wood. Make sure to use no more than half the recommended water amount per package of Kool Aid. The less water you use, the stronger the color. If you are looking for darker, bolder colors, use commerical food-grade food coloring. It is usually possible to buy bulk food colorings at a food supply outlet or cake decorating shop at reasonable prices. It is a good idea to wear plastic gloves when doing this so that your hands do not get dyed, and have a pile of throwaway rags or alot of paper towels available to set the wet dyed wood down on. (It will get dyed too). Yet another way to dye wood for budgie toys is to use regular food coloring (like you would use to tint cake frosting). After letting the wood dry overnight, soak the dyed wood in white vinegar diluted with water. After some soaking in the vinegar, remove the wood and let it dry. Then rinse it with plain water and let it dry again before using it on any toys. This was taken from http://www.auspet.com/forum/send_to.php?ur.../arts/toys.html Cheers  Una

Oh My! What A Traumatic Time

Disabled Budgie
Sounds like a splayed leg to me also but she really needs to get the bird to a vet for a full look over I had a little girl budgie that had BOTH her legs splayed and she lived a very happy life (till the snake got her :hap: ) I made a few landing platforms for her to sit on easily but because she had been this way since she was little, she wasn't aware that she had a problem and got about just as easy as the other birds and would perch on the thin perches too.. She even went on to lay a few eggs but was victim to a snake before she had a chance to mother them.. Here she is.. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/una...ayedleggies.jpg Even though both her legs flicked out to the sides she managed to work out how to best get around.. Cheers  Una

Transfering Bubs For Cyclone
Doing my Cyclone clean up and just getting everything in place in preparation, I'm going to bring all the aviary Budgies inside but I have a nesting box out there with 4 bubs in it. I was wondering if instead of transferring the aviary nesting box which is bolted and awkward to remove, if i could use a new one thats identical to put the babies in into the cage I'm bringing inside, will the mum reject them? she is a great mum and doesn't mind me handling them etc but I'm not sure if she would go into another nesting box.. Sorry if this doesn't make sense as I'm kinda in a rush (Laughing out loud)... Do you think it would work transferring them and also because they will be in a smaller cage would i maybe experience aggresion to the babies from the other budgies? separate the mum bub and babies even maybe? Cheers  Una By The Way does anyone have an extra pair of hands i could borrow

Chronic Egg Laying
Just received an email with all sorts of information in it and one of the topics was chronic egg laying in budgies. This made me think of Phoebe's Comet and Star so i thought id post this as i'm not sure if it was suggested before.. How is chronic egg laying treated? First, make sure your bird is eating a proper diet so as not to become malnourished. A calcium supplement may be appropriate at these times. If you are removing eggs as they are laid, this practice should be stopped as it can encourage the bird to lay more eggs. Boiling the eggs and replacing them will sometimes break the cycle. The environment can be changed to try to reduce egg laying by decreasing the number of hours the bird is exposed to light and changing the location of the pet's cage. Owners may need to decrease the amount of time spent with the bird until egg laying ceases or is reduced. Not sure if this will help anyone in the future but there you go... Cheers  Una
