Just recently, a little budgie, Philip came into my birdless world. I bought him (amongst many others, THIS toy

deathtrap1.jpg

He got his neck trapped in the gap between the pinch-seed cup and the edges of the toy, HERE

deathtrap2.jpg

In what must have been his struggle to free himself, he ended up exactly as the sketch below portrays...HORRIFIC, isnt it.

howphiliphung.jpg

I managed to free him in time to save his life because I was able to push the pinch seed cup out of the way and release his trapped neck

As you will see from the sketch, Philip would have DIED horribly had I not been in the room when he got caught. If you have this toy, it is vital to the life of your bird that you remove the tray, and also the flimsy wire and beads on the mirror. It is a lot safer then.

Philip nearly fied, please dont let his sickening accident happen to any of your birds.

You are welcome Norm, I could not keep this to myself, and have posted it on many other boards. Please cross post and use my pictures if you use other boards also. I am just thankful that I am reporting a very near miss, and not an actual death. But if they is kept in circulation as it is current;y designed, its only gping to be a matter of time before a death occurs, if it hasnt already.

Poor thing, I'm glad you found him in time, he's one lucky little budgie.

Thanks for the warning, I've seen similar toys and considered buying one, not anymore.

I have had two other items that birds have killed themselves with. One is a tube feeder for seed. One budgie upended himself down the top of the tube and suffocated. The other toy is a common one and most people do not know the dangers of...A rope swing perch with a tassle of rope at the base. The tassle allows a budgie to explore and go through. Budgies can get stuck in there and flap wildly to be free, thus hanging themselves. Any rope fringing on toys you need to cut it back to less than an inch or inch and a half. A 3 inch tassle which most of them have will hang a budgie very easily. If you dont want to cut the fringe, you can bind it with some other colourful sisal rope, thereby reducing the danger. :)

That is very scary!!! :o

Is there standards for pet toys like there is with childrens toys? :)

Our precious pets are just as suseptible to choking and strangulation as our gorgous children are...

thanks for the warning!

Most of the pet toys sold for birds are from China and certainly need a good thinking about before purchase. A lot of what looks pretty and fun can be deadly.

Thank God you found him in time! Thanks for the warning amazing that they can sell toys like that to bird owners considering most people work and it was a food bowl!

I've had the same thing happening here. One of my budgies got caught in there. After that I've removed all the middle feeders and I didn't have any problems since. Most of these cheap soft plastic toys are very dangerous :)

Thanks all for the warnings. It's very scary when you think about what can happen when you're not around. Lucky you found it in time. You'd think there'd be some sort of standard, considering how nosy birds are and knowing that they get into everything. I'll be checking all my toys more closely before putting them in and regularly there after!!!
