If he's really in love with the mirror you could use it as a training aid to get him to come out of his cage. I know i use Blinkie's mirror to get him back into his cage at night, so i'm sure the reverse could work..
  2. Fresh veggies should be offered everyday. See what else you can get them to try, things like bok choy, zucchini, and apple are some other good ones you could offer.

I would never mix lovebirds and budgies, they're both aggressive little birds, and the lovebirds could take a leg off a budgie no probs. If you're not breeding and it's a large aviary you might be able keep cockatiels with budgies, but you would have to be really watchful and ready to remove either species if it didn't work out. Budgies come in such a massive variety of colours that you could have a rainbow flock without mixing species.
  4. Beautiful boys!! I love Norm, i would love to have my own TCB.
  5. How funny that a yf grey chose a yf grey mate! Do you find that your budgies choose to pair up with similar colours to themselves usually?
  6. I change the paper out as it gets dirty (which is too often with three budgies in there, hehe) and wipe the whole cage down when i change toys and perches around which is once every 2-4 weeks depending on how lazy i've been.
  7. Congrats!! That is so exciting for you! :rip: I don't think i've shared this news here yet, but for the next two years i'll be doing a diploma in Animal Technology at the local CIT. As part of the first semester i have to do 80hrs work experience, and i would love for that to be at an avian vet. It sucks that it'll have to be done in my school holidays though.
  8. I use Trill seed for my indoor budgies. Trill makes a nice complete budgie seed, it comes in 1kg boxes rather than the 2kg boxes. It's got a larger variety of seeds than the bigger box and is a really nice, clean mix. My vet commented on how nice it looked last time i was there too. I tried pellets for a while, but for their cost i wasn't convinced that they were all they're made out to be. There's really only one main brand you'll find easily in Australia and that's Vetafarm.
  9. Well i'm glad that the case is closed and they will leave you alone now. It's awful that they are wasting their time putting birds like yours through unnecessary stress, and yet ignoring true animal cruelty cases like what you see in some pet shops or even in some peoples houses. Seems they really need to rethink their system.
  10. They're both beautiful budgies!

Here's another i took of Mr Stinko today, apparently standing with your legs far apart is a sign of manliness...to me it looks more like a sign of dorkiness though. :(Laughing out loud):

That's Blinkie alright, he always has to speak his mind!
  13. :(Laughing out loud): I do this too now, because i swear my budgies were aiming at the grate instead of through it. It's so much easier to just quickly change the paper towel that having to wipe the grate and try to get all the poop off.

You've done an awesome job with those guys!! They look great, and sooo cute! PS: My Blinkie is in my sig, he's a cobalt spangle and in some light he looks a bit violet, so your Violet could very well end up like him.
  15. My guys won't touch capsicum, but they go absolutely nuts for anything with chilli, i think they must like the taste.
  16. I make sure i ALWAYS have some rice and veggie cubes in the freezer. :hap: My guys LOVE them. At the moment i cook up brown rice, fresh broccoli, carrot and peas with lots and lots of dried chilli mixed in (birds don't taste the heat in chilli like we do), they all dig in right away when i put a plate out. :hap:
  17. Nope, but i'm not sure it would be good for them. It could be too cold for their crops... :fear
  18. Some of my budgies (Fizzy included) seem to be on a mission to destroy the veggies rather than eat them. :fear It's really quite funny to watch, and like you, i'm sure they eat *some* of it. :(Laughing out loud): The only downside is the MESS!

:fear I do NOT envy you guys over in Perth!!! :fear My aviary is constantly in the shade of a big golden ash tree, but it still gets really gross and hot in the middle of summer.
  20. I'm always hosing my aviary birds down in the summer, they get way too hot. They all go nuts in the spray.

:(Laughing out loud): That's so cute!!! Comet sure looks like a real character.
  22. Once the humans and dogs had opened their Chrissy pressies i got all the birds out to get their toys. Blinkie got a wiffle ball octopus, judging by his expression that's not what he asked Santa for! "But mum, i asked Santa for a GIRLFRIEND!! Not a stupid toy!" Gracie got a paddle pop stick toy. Bailee got a chewy toy with shredders and wooden beads - my expert opinion is that he's jumping for joy, but some would argue that's fright. Cookie got a big shreddy octopus toy, which she was afraid of at first but she'll love it in no time. Ozzie got a beady toy, and he was the only one appreciative enough to show any enthusiasm at the sight of his new toy! Fizzy was too rude to even get near his toy. It was made of lots of folded up paper with beads and buttons, good for chewing! Ozzie and Blinkie showed that they really do love each other, awww!!! Blinkie was faced with a dilemma when Fizzy took over his beloved mirror Gracie hung out on her favourite shoulder - dads. Cookie just sat around looking pretty in the hopes that Ozzie would notice her at last. Bailee was being a cutie as usual. And look, he got over his "joy" and actually played with his new toy! And then Blinkie flew in for one last photo! Merry Christmas!
  23. Every Christmas my aviary flock get a delicious big seed treat as their pressie. I got some photos of them enjoying it this morning. Pudding was the first to locate the tasty treat, you can see from her fat tummy that this is often the case Gherkin was next and he was so excited he just jumped right onto the treat, this concerned his boyfriend Scamp greatly Mojo joined Gherkin on the seed treat after a while And Scamp decided that if his boyfriend thought it was safe, then it was safe One last photo of Gherkin and his beloved boyfriend Scamp, awww

Have you taken him to the vet to get a splint put on? That will help it heal straight.
