10 Questions
1 A novice breeder who has purchased three pairs, a Sky Blue cock and hen, a Light Green cock, and hen, a Cinnamon Cobalt and a Violet Opaline hen, asks you if he should pair them this way. What pairing would you suggest and why? answer- interesting question, there are so many piarin for different reasons. ou could pair them that way to keep a blue like and green line strong, or mix the light greens with a sky blue partner and you then know you have greens spilt for blue, plus any blue babie that appear tell you that the at lest one parentis split already. The other two are hard, either way the opaline dissappears to become split in some males. The Cinnamon with the sky blue would look nice. blah not much of an answer. I would need to talk to this 'novice' to see what he was after in the babes. 2 You pair a Dominant Pied Dark Green with a Cobalt hen, what are the expected breeding results? answer -50% Dominant Pied Dark greens /blue 50% normal dark greens/ blue Of cuase these would be different if you knew the male was slpit blue already 3 Your best Grey Green hen loses both primary tail feathers during the week before the show. Would you show this bird at the show? answer- as lin said it need to be in top condition for a show 4 One of your best cock birds was attacked by a hen. She removed half of the cere. After it healed you placed this cock with another hen in the breeding cage. He has nothing to do with the hen, always moving to the furthest corner. She laid clear eggs. Would you keep this cock? answer- I would give him another go, giving him plenty of time alone with the hen to bond before adding the box. If he was still afraid of hens then retire him. Selling if I'm out of room. 5 On your inspection of the birds in your aviary, you notice that a few cocks and hens are fat. You remove them to a small wire cage and they put on more weight. You use a hopper as a seed container. Should you. change you method of feeding? Are there other changes you can make in your husbandry? answer- limit the amount of seed they can get a day and add fesh fruit and vegges, to the mix, umm make sure there aer interesting thing for them to play or chew on so they don't simply sit there waiting for food. 6 A pair, Sky Blue cock and a Sky Blue hen, with five chicks:- 1. Opaline Sky Blue hen. 2. Sky Blue cock. 3. Spangle Cobalt hen. 4. Cinnamon Opaline Sky Blue hen, 5. Light Green hen. Is this possible? What should you note in your records for this cock and hen? answer- no it is not, the spangle cobalt hen and light green hen are either from another male, from not knowning the right father or fostering eggs. Spangle can only show up in babies if one of the parent are spangle it is not a recessive gene. Two blue birds to not have any genes to make the yellow need in a green bird. The records sould now state that the male is split for opaline. 7 When I started with Budgerigars, an experienced breeder asked if I liked coloured birds and I said yes. His reply was that I should buy a good Grey Green, split blue cock and mate it to a Violet hen. Why do you think he made this suggestion? answer- to get nice coloured blues and violets. Not sure why a grey green instead of a normal green. I know adding a green can strengthen a line. adding- is it becuase you would have gotten some of both? 8 A Light Green hen has a dislocated hip, which cannot be put in a show but can she be used in the breeding cage? Why can't she be entered in a Show? answer- she is not in top contition for a show, but I wouldn't breed her with a hip like that, if you have a dislocated hip would you like someone to stand on your shoulders?? 9 The Judge is judging a class of Grey Green hens and notices a bird which has lost its dark blue primary tail feathers both of which are lying on the floor of the cage. The cage is placed second for most of the time while judging takes place. The Judge then asks the Steward to remove this hen as it's disqualified. Do you know why? answer- you can't judge a bird with out tail feathers since some of the judging involes them?? 10 What is the cheek patch colour of a Spangle Grey Green cock? answer- blue, I think (Laughing out loud) ohh that was fun have no idea about the show stuff so I'm guessing there

Thoes Who Know There Colors
That is a cinnamon Ashen or smokey(known as Scottish)Fallow, Dun(known as english)Fallow, Bronze( known as german)Fallow and Pale Fallow Just read that the ashen one is extinct If cuase they are red, becuase it is a fallow. Not sure what it looks like or if they are meaning a mix of the two. Can we see the picture or can you give us the common name for it?

Failed Clutch

Nice Setup
I don't like the idea of the curtain either, it also hamper your view while getting inside, I would think more could get out while you 'fought' with the thing. But it is a nice size Personally I wouldn't have the breeding boxes but that just me. I like the three breeding cages on the back :fear

Sexing Babies
okay the picture of them on the ladder I think the one in the front on the right looks like a boy the one behind him looks to me a girl and finding a picture of the one with the dot on the head looks to me a girl too. Lets see if others agree with me.
-
Breeding Age
Three years for a hen is the max to most people, and I wouldn't go past it if she is a breeder that was started from 12 months old. Yet saying that I breed my girl when she was four. After checking with breeders in my area. For a male it is be up to six years at stud before been retired.

Coloring Question
It's still more of a cream to me Thank about the cage have to cover all bases I can think any more than what I have stated I guess this is another wait them out ans see deals.
-
Coloring Question
Oh yes Daz it would be one since the colour isn't mixing with the blue I can see the colour on the neck in the first one, but I want to put out to others that you cn see the reddy plum colour of the eye from the recessive gene I think we are all going to have to wait for the next moult and see if more yellow appears or it goes away. I noticed the bottom of the cage is yellow does he run along it beg to get out at any time? Clearflight is having all white or all yellow flight wings. Mostly found on pied birds.

Err, Have I Done Something To Upset You, Teapot?

Coloring Question
That if he is simply dirty IF he does have the parblue 2 gene (yellowface) then he could eaither molut to an even yellow or be spotty. It's all up in the air really. And no peach doesn't come in budgies no one has found the red colour in them at all. The dream for many is to bred a pink budgie. I would love a shot of the back if that is where it is strongest. If you can both with and with out a flash.

An Interesting Observation
Rainbow that was so touching to read And it made me thing of Pie he wasn't tamed when younger he was simply out in the aviary with the others. He was around 6 months of age when I got him, but I didn't try to tame him like I did Freckle, at one stage freckle would climb onto my foot when ever I when to get her after a fly around and she had landed on the ground. He would fly like made when ever I put my hand in the cage or hid in the corner where he slept every night. Now I put my hand in and he is almost the right to jump onto it, sometimes Marine beats him. Yes I know he is only looking to see if I'm holding a treat this time or not but he will happily stay put as I move my hand around. All I showed him was love and kindness and he chose to accept me. oh and yes I would spend 4 years to let an animal get to know me a human blah there are plenty of others around.

How Long Should I Leave The Nest Box In?
if this is the hens first time it can take a while and two weeks if a fine period of time to have to wait. Is the hen in condition? her cere a nice dark brown and flaky looking, it might not be flaky but most are. If not this might drag out the time length for eggs. Are they araid of the box? not sure how you have it set up but if insdie to they climb all over it? or Do they sit ont he otehr side of the cage to it? If they do seems scare put some of they favourite things near the hole to eat. Each time making then get closer and closer to the opening. Another thing some hens like to 'clean' their nest. Is there anything inside the box like wood shavings (making sure it's safe for budgies) scattered in there. Chewing and removing loose bits of woods is like the natural instinct of making nest in the hollow. It might work or it might not, but with a first time mother you have try a few thing to find out what she likes. One other thing is the hole facing them? I don't mean are you sure you put the nest to the cage the right way But some boxs have the ole to the side not on the end and the placement if the hole makes it harder for the birds to 'see' it. I had mine facing one way and the hen was trying to create her own hole into it until I faced it 90 degrees. (of cuase mine was all the way in the cage not hanging outside.)

What Do You Think Of This Cage :d
woohoo go Chirpy
-
Confused
now that's okay, seperating them will break the bond a bit, so if the male gets a bit restless again just break them up like you did.
-
Coloring Question
very cute I wouldn't call that colour peach. The only thing I can lean towards is a very faded yellowface. If that is the case then the yellow colouring will spread over the bird with each moult. With all in my head it's either that or he is dirty also yes it looks like a clearflight to me.

Fao:- Lin And Anyone Else Who Wants To Have A Go!
wow good luck Lin I would fail big time, but then I've never had an interest in showing budgies.
-
Confused
I would think because he is wanting to move tot he nest step which is mating. Could be many reasons, she wasn't ready, he didn't do the courtship dance, sing, feeding correctly. Or in his attempts to mount he hurt her. If she was getting stressed then yes, they can start to bond again later after he has calmed down. When you feel it is alright to try it. Make sure you have at least a few hours to stay home after they have been rejoined, to keep an eye one them. How old are they? Will you be having to break the bond for another 6 months for more or only a couple? If they are really young it might be an idea to leave them in separate cages until older.

Breeding
I can't believe he is 11. a budgie that old would be having heart failure with the caring of all the babies.
