  5. thank lovely I should have added dominant pied to clear up confusion
  6. sounds like she is starting to make a home. She will be looking at oscar becuase they are a flock and now are seperated but the 'flock' feeling is still there. She will chew and nibble at everything just like she did in play. You know you have to wait longer than a day for anything to really happen Just relax and wait.

Yeah they learn quicky that your not going to steal the eggs completely. I haven't heard of any abandoning nest becuase of what the owners do. A tap on the box warns the hen you are coming and so will leave completly others just shift of the eggs from the niose. Tootie isn't tame at all to me but willing put up with me numbering each egg, candling each egg on day 5 and then handling the babies. A bit of noise at the intruder and a few nips but she happily sat back on them all when I returned eggs/babies.
  9. wonderful Shawna I love all those group shots What a rainbow you have.

not a lot of it but some say to give dairy to their birds diet. I'm sure one drink will not harm him but don't let him do it every morning.
  13. a clear patch on the back of the head means they are a pied bird even if the rest of the feathers are normal.
  14. yes it's possible becuase he can be carrying the gene or even a normal ino gene which can get you a baby like mum. as to the melon look alikes yes I think 4 of them are just like her, i love the blue on the youngest too

the male also have to be a year, but some breeders will mate at 10 months and only give that pair a single clutch, or even leave the hen to raise them alone. But a year is better. And the age of 6 for a male to stop breeding.
  17. it really depends on the bird and the bond you have to start with, if the one you are wanting to add is an outgoing fellow he might tame down inside when he sees Squeaka with your, or it could go the other way and she feeds of his fear of you and hand and becomes less tame.

keep offering the fruit mixed with the veggies, budgies tend to go for things they havn't touched before when there are young around. You can get a egg food from a pet shop to add into their diet or what I like to use is boiled eggs, just mash it up and mix it in with carrot or any other vegges you are giving that day and they will dig into it. My hen who hadn't touched a single heathly thing in 3 years lept out of the box for some mashed egg and carrot
  19. your correct Mac there is a differance in colour from cobalt to cobalt. I've always believed Bobby to be a cobalt, but then he does have some very very dark cheeck patches. whic ones of these pictures is closest to his real colour?

Both male and females need to be one year old or more before breeding for the reasons Karen stated and more, at this age ( 6 months) they are like teenages, they can breed sucessfully but are not mentally ready and can abanded new hatched chicks or start attacking them. It's good that you are looking around right now to get information, look in your local library for some budgie books they give a basic run down on what happens with breeding and such and the books are free. If you want more there are good ones to be found in book stores. But as to the first question it best to pair the two up for breeding with no other 'spares' in the same cage, if it was another female they would fight over the box, break egg, kill the others chicks just for the box and fight over the male with very bad results. With another male he can get in the way of mating which mean infirtle eggs and if he bothers the other male enough they can and will fight for space. You can get another female if you wish and have two pairs in different cages but that is up to you. There have been other members here with plastic breeding cages without a worry. Just be sure the bottom of it isn't smooth and slippery, this can make it hard for mum and dad to get in an out and be a cuase of splayed legs in chicks. I think that was all the quesiton if I missed one or you have another ask away.

  24. :(Laughing out loud): I fixed all you posts into one Kirby. Thanks for the info and yes I have the same cage. I was trying to work the picture out becuase of the handle in the front of the grill thing, i guess that's why the door will not open fully.
