Budgerigars are food for hawks and eagles. THey are also food for snakes. This "Fright" is a way that nature has to try and save the birds. At the smallest movement or sound they will fly. At night it is more so because they can't see what the danger maybe. I have a night light in the aviary to help this sort of fright. As nerwen and Lin said. Birds can died from broken necks by flying into the wire.

I use the canned kernals...the birds love it... and it's easy to serve
  4. Pine is fine just keep it in a dry location in an open box. You want it to draw some moisture so that it doesn't dry the nest box air. As to how deep to make it... ....sorry I shouldn't laugh .. It doesn't matter as most hen will through most of it out. Put it about a hand full. I have one hen that has scratched it all away and has the eggs on the bare floor. The best time to replenish it is after the 1st chick is about 5 days old. The hen usually doesn't throw it out then. ...oh let me say that it is a good idea to put some in just before you set the pair as the shavings in the cage will give you the indication that the hen has been in the box
  5. Does that make my fluffy a mauve too ? I think Fluffy is a yellow faced blue grey with the grey being dominant. I think that Max is a yellow face blue grey as well. Here is Angel a normal Blue grey. http://www.home.gil.com.au/~dwellsadsl/Images/Angel.jpg http://www.home.gil.com.au/~dwellsadsl/Images/ash.jpg Here is a grey cinnamon - Ash
  6. Your Cages are fine. My Breeding cages are 600 long x 445 high x 380 deep. They also act as a nursary cage. This is an old photo... *got to update it* Where the box on the right is I now havean extra Breeding cage and two Nursary Cages. both nursaries can be changed into Breeding cages to give 9 Breeding cages.

This may not be a cure but I was lead to believe that Apple Cider Vinagur (1 Teaspoon in a litre of water) can help keep AYD (Avian Yeast Desease) away.
  11. Here is Jazz... http://home.gil.com.au/~dwellsadsl/birds/K-05-w2.jpg A Sky Blue Greywing Dominant Pied hen. I think we can say Dominant Pied in place of Ghalib Al-Nasser's Continental.

Ros out your way mate they breed in the spring but you can breed them through Winter and Summer. So long as they have food water and a safe place to lay the eggs. Here is Brisbane we started to breed them about a month ago. But this Breeding Season is dictaded by the Show Bench Are you colony breeding (Nest boxes hung in an Aviary)?. How old are the birds?

Coccidiosis Symptoms: intestinal inflammation, bloody feces, weight loss Description: Various species of coccidiae occur in birds. These protozoan infect the small intestine of the bird. Coccidiosis seldom produces sudden death but death may occur following heavy infestation for several months. Treatment: Amprolium at 3 ml/l water for 2 weeks or sulfaquinoxaline 0.05% at 6 g/l water for 7 days. The latter dosage must be increased by 50% for small birds, and a second treatment may be required. I use Coccivet from Vetafarm I do this on a 3 monthly basis.
  14. Hi toffeefluff I agree with Shawna. You will need to read up on breeding before you put any nest boxes or breeding cages in. *Please ask questions. *Read through the existing posts. *Visot Breeders and see how they do it. *Join a club.

I am sorry for your loss. I lost Spangle the same way... but I don't believe that calcium defeciency is involved. Spangle was on cuttlefish and calcium added to the water. I maybe wrong but spangle was on a high calcium diet when she prolapsed.
  16. smily what happened to the mum and dad? If you have egg and biscuit mix try a solution of 6 parts warm milk to 1 part mix. 35 deg C or there abouts every two hours until they won't take any more. tea spoon to the tip of the beak. You should see the crop start to fill. you should get a shoe box and line it with tissue paper and direct a bed lamp over it. Get a thermometer to make sure it's not too hot. Keep them some place dry and safe.. You have to decide that one. just make sure they are safe and warm. You need hand raising mix. You need a special spoon with a feeding syringe.

I have a quarantine cage that is separated from the main aviary. The main aviary is in the back yard and the quarantine cage is under the pergola. some 15 meters away.

  20. There is insect sprays for a round birds Vetfarm has a good range
  21. Try today to feed him every two and a half hours. This will have him calling for food. It's this calling that brings the hen to develop the crop milk. Hope fulling by lunch time she would have gotten the idea and started to feed him. I had one of my hens do this with her first chick from her first clutch. I had to feed him three times before she got the idea... I think I got it easier than you have. She has gone on to raise 9 healthy chicks ver 2 rounds.
  22. A Good idea is to let her have two clutches and then rest her for 6 months.
