  1. Always claim to only have about $20,000 less than the asking price, they will be more inclined to take a lower price if they don't feel they can push you any higher So if the house is $280,000, tell them you only have 260,000 but you REALLY love the place If you are lucky they might come back with $265 or $270 then drop it by another $2000 (say to 268) and say you have managed to borrow $3000 off someone(your mum...) and that's your limit.
  2. Ask any scotsman, a kilt is very manly Just tell Dave you're having cultural week at home
  3. My birds get a mist from the hose (making sure I run the hot water out of it first if it's been in the sun) a couple of times a day in summer.
  4. My recommendation would be to spend the first day in the backyard if possible (or atleast on tiles) with the potty in easy reach incase he does have an accident before he realises that you mean business :what: I still have the kilt in the cupboard just incase I need it for Max
  5. How long will he hold out if you leave him with no pants on? We had the same problem with Alex so I made him a kilt And what does a good scotsman wear under his kilt? NOTHING OF COURSE He worked out pretty quick that it wasn't so nice doing no.2's with no pants on so he very quickly started using the toilet then Here's his kilt, I can't believe I still have aphoto of it :what:
  6. Hey I'm open to joint breeding type offers JB but I'm just not planning on sending any of my babies away to new homes if you know what I mean. I'm still really in that 'need to keep my mitts on my good birds' stage. I'd say it wouldn't be that beneficial to breed lacewing in to crested though, they'd look pretty but the major hurdle with crested is keeping the size up and the inos and lacewings wouldn't help with that.
  7. I will probably breed the crested babies out to normals to increase the size so they won't be going anywhere any time soon, sorry JB
  8. Yes it is, the cock must be carrying cinnamon and the chick will be a hen. The cinnamon will dilute the colour a bit
  9. The guy didn't exactly sound impressed that I had asked, kind of like I was accusing him of not caring for his animals but hopefully he realises I was only asking out of concern and not 'attacking' his reputation
  10. I wouldn't purchase any house that had termites, even if they are now gone, it can seriously undermine the structural integrity of the house and while it may not be a problem now it may become one in the future. We are also looking to buy at the moment so I know how you feel
  11. I visited a pet shop as we were walking past the other day on our way into another shop, I went to check out the birds and was initially concerned to see one cage which housed a bird with really bad scaly face and another with an undershot beak I resisted the urge to get cranky straight awya and quietly asked the manager what the deal was. His response: 'Oh, they aren't for sale, they were given to us like that and we've had the vet out to treat them but the scaly face is proving very resistant, as far as I'm concerned I don't care how long it takes for them to get better, they can stay here until we get them right' So my initial horrified reaction was quelled when I realised that this guy has been spending quite a bit of money on them and if anything in the end he will probably lose money on them after all the treatment. I did offer to take them off his hands and continue treating them at home so that he could have his shop cage back but he said no, he wanted to get them treated and he was happy to wear the cost and didn't mind that he had to give up one of his sale cages for them to live in. Just made me smile so I thought I would share
  12. Thought I would also add that in some areas quarantine forms part of the government guidelines for captive birds. This is what is used by the RSPCA to assess complaints, etc and while it is unlikely they would ever prosecute the average person with one or two birds there are actually hefty fines for non-compliance including not providing adequate quarantine!!
  13. He could be, some learn alot quicker than others
  14. A third chick for the crested pair last night I'd like to commend Pippi who in my dim aviary where the breeding cages are for the moment(as I am still trying to work out how to install my flouro light) actually predicted that one of the eggs was about to hatch
  15. If he has been neglected it also could be to do with poor diet and lighting conditions (eg, being kept in the dark more than he should could possibly affect hormone levels), it will be interesting to see if it rights itself in the next week or so. To give you an idfea with the iris rings this is my boy, he is a normal green so definately not recessive peid or anything like that: I thought I was going crazy until I held a light very close and then could see them very faintly.
  16. I have one which I posted about recently who looked as though he had no iris rings, it was only when I held a very bright light right near his face that I could see the faintest ones right on the edges, somethimes they can be very hard to see
  17. Having a 4 year old and a 2 year old of my own Deb I have this perfect image of it in my mind!!! My mum was telling stories about me on the weekend. Apparently when I was about 4 I 'painted' the lounge for her :party0011: Only thing is I painted it with Vaseline!!!!!!

I think you could tecah your cats using the old spray bottle method not to bother with them. Most cats will sit and watch them that is nothing unusual, the only real worry is if they are going to knock it over, once they realise that the bird is behind bars they usually don't bother any more. The main reason you were having issues with putting it on the freezer is because there was space next tio the cage for the cats to jump up to

Would your cats really bother them if you had a cage in the main part of the house up off the floor? I have one cat, two dogs, plus two kids, lizards, a free range rabbit and my birds. The cat is interested but she wouldn't leap on the cage and while the birds may watch her nervously for the first day or two they soon realise that the cat is on the floor and they are safe in their cage. If you had a cage on a stand then they would be up out of reach.
  20. He looks mint green to me so what about Mintie

So for the sake of a $50 cage and one month you could have saved $3500! I don't know how much your budgies cost you Whit but a spare cage is a fantastic investment for those occasions when they have to be seperated or if one needs to go to the vet. The second cage doesn't have to be as large as your main cage as it is only used for shorter periods for a single bird in your case.

And on the note of justifying costs Kaz would you care to share how much some of those birds were worth?

This may be of interest to you, it is the full guidelines and includes cage sizes, etc also. http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/dpi/nreninf.nsf/...19000efd10?open

It probably means she doesn't quarantine, given you wouldn't know whether she had introduced any new birds to her flock recently it potentially makes the risks to Skye even larger, hopefully you are lucky though and they are fine. I should add that quarantine is actually not just recommended by us, it is part of the government guidelines for captive birds and is right up there with proper housing and adequate food and shelter.
  25. Have you considered clipping her wings just once while you are doing the intitial training? You can allow them to grow back in the long run but it would make a huge difference during this difficult period
