  1. Neat you need to tell your hens to "Just say NO"! They're just being teenagers and it's that time of year, I wouldn't worry about it unless any of them are actually trying to nest somewhere innapropriate
  2. Are you asking if there is a chat room? There isn't one unfortunately but if you want to start a discussion about non-budgie stuff then you can use the off topic forum
  3. melbournebudgies replied to renee's topic in Aviaries
Maybe he meant that he surface cleaned the wet and dirty areas regularaly but did a full clean a few times a year?
  4. Topics regarding health and support etc. of other animals besides budgies will be removed. . If you'd met my children they would be animals :hap: Just kidding, well done to your little man :hap:
  5. That's the main one Elly, basically I would like solar buyt my other half won't consider it unless we can afford a unit which allows him to havwe his beloved air conditioner :hap:
  6. I doubt it Deb I think iot just my other half being difficult I'll ask him what it all means, maybe it is a weekly type reading or something...
  7. Yes but the main things that chew the power are the large appliances and since we haven't really decided what size house we are going to build yet we just want to get an idea of what other peoples power consumption is like. In reality the results from this will determine whether it is even worth considering it as an option.
  8. no wonder I had no idea who he was
  9. According to my hubby there should be something which says Average kw hours, is there a number which is around the 300-500mark? Don't include the hot water if they are seperate as we will probably get a gas hot water system
  10. :laughter: Deb Mine is 4 going on 14, he puts his hand up in front (talk to the hand style) and says, I don't want to hear your voice right now mum, I'm feeling grumpy To which I normally reply 'you will hear my voice whether you like it or not now sit down and listen'. He then rolls his eyes at me and plonks on the bed with his arms crossed
  11. I am interested to hear how much power people consume on average in their nhouse, particularly over the peak summer period if you have an aircon. We are looking at building a house soon but we are trying to work out whether full solar power is a feasible option. I need to know what your 'average kilowatt (kW) hours' consumption is. It will be a number like 300 or 550, etc on your bill somewhere. Could you also tell me how large your house is and whether you have an air con/what type (refridgerated or evaporative) Thanks
  12. Never heard of him either
  13. Can someone please tell which diseases I need to be concerned about which can be transmitted with no physical contact? I am facing having to bring a bird in to be near another bird but in a seperate cage with only minimal quarantine. I am trying to ask this question without being species specific but some of you may already realise which bird I am referring too the question is a very relevent one though for budgies :hi:
  14. Sorry should add Libby that system only works if you have airflow going through them at the same time, you generally use something with a loose weave, in the old days they used hessian. The theory is the same as an evaporative airconditioner so if done right the humidity isn't too bad
  15. Be aware of situational problems too. My oldest was completely trained at home but would go in his undies at childcare. After many frustrating months of this I finally asked him why he wouldn't used the toilet at 'kids'. His response in a aw der mum voice was "We wear nappies as kids, we don't use the toilet..." I turned around directly to the new carer and said, this is the end of it, we need to just make him understand that there isn't an option any more. Within two days he had stopped going in his pants at childcare
  16. It was brought up in the topic titled, Will the eggs be okay or something like that Personally my budgies like a direct spray so I give them a mist with the hose a couple of times a day on any day where the temp is over about 38. The breeze blowing through the damp aviary then seems to keep t cooler for a while. This year I'm thinking of trialling hanging sheets on the windows of the aviary and keeping them wet, the same way people used to keep their food cool on hot days before we had power.
  17. Welcome to the world of toilet training JB, no matter what you do there will be poo and it will probably end up on the floor at some stage
  18. Worm 4 times a year Ivermec spot on for lice, etc whenever a new bird arrives and opportunistically if birds are caught for another reason(such as when I put them in a breeding cage) Powdered eggshells (for calcium) In water vitamin supplement once a week for all birds Calcium block always available My birds also get lots of fruit and vegies, soaked soup mix(lentils, split peas, chick peas, barley), soaked chicken grower crumble, green seeding grasses and native branches. I don't go overboard on the medicinal type supplements as I feel this provides a good diet as well.
  19. I would recommend doing it over summer if you can, it's just easier as you don't have to put so many clothes on them to keep them warm and you can do what Neat's about to do and just put a long tshirt on them :hap: It made life heaps easier with my oldest and if yours is starting to tell you then it's a good time to just start putting the potty in the corner and let him develop some interest in it, even if he just sits on it fully dressed to watch TV .
  20. Mine turned 2 on Saturday JB so I'm in the same boat too. I think I'll wait until the weather is consistently warm though and then I can just take him out the backyard while we are training where accidents aren't such a problem
  21. The other thing is to go to the shop and buy some SPECIAL undies and when he has not had an accident for a couple of days and you feel he is ready to graduate to undies explain that they are special big boy undies and only for boys who use the toilet, if he goes potty in these undies they'll go away and he won't get them back again until he can show that he's big enough for them. Hype them up as much as possible that way he can be proud of his big boy undies once he is more reliable
  22. On that note my oldest never used a potty he went straight to the toilet. The funny thing is it was not for lack of trying but even at 18months he was too big for the potty and when sitting on it he would wee over the front After a bunch of puddles on the floor I just gave up and taught him to use the toilet.
  23. My oldest was porky and never fit into pull ups We had to improvise when he went to childcare so we bought cheap incontinence pads and stuck them in his undies, they were great for that transitional stage when he was nearly trained but sometimes started to wee in his pants and then ran to the toiet as they soaked up the little accidents, plus they didn't feel the same as nappies so he was less inclined to use them like nappies
  24. It's a buyers market here too Elly but nowhere near as bad as over there I don't think.
  25. Ummm...can't really help you there...unless you made it a green kilt
