Pearce's Budgerigar Blog
When i had the feather mites (not red mite) I made half the coopex sachet into 5L of water and dipped all my birds up to their necks in it. You have to do it in the morning and make sure the birds don't get chilled with any winds or drafts. i was lucky that the day i did it, it was about 36 degrees and the birds were happy to get wet. Your mite issue sounds so server i would recommend you dip all your birds, and then dip all your bird stuff in the coopex. then spray everything else that can not be dipped until it is soaking wet. Just don't get any in the birds food or water and make sure it is all dry before you put the birds back. Then when its all dry from the first treatment (after and hour or so) use the other half of the sachet to 2.5L of water and use it to spray the cages, perches and nesting boxes etc again, until there are NO dry spots. Do not spray any deep litter etc. the cages have to be completely empty first and don't forget to treat the perches as well.

Parakeet Or Budgie ?
I stick with preffering BUDGIE as a name for them. We are not a parakeet website as we only talk about budgies Though budgerigars are often called Parakeets, especially in American English, this term refers to any of a number of small parrots with long flat tails. A parakeet is a North American term for any one of a large number of unrelated small to medium sized parrot species, that generally have long-tail feathers. The term is descriptive, but does not imply an actual relationship between the different parakeets.

All Systems Go!
My hubby (007) has so generously given up "his" garden shed to become our new birdroom Its 3x3 meters and this is what it looks like. Today we are getting in amongst the dust and spiders to empty all of the stuff (AKA useless JUNK!!) out of it. Over the next weeks the shed will be moved Garden will be dug away Concrete slab laid Large aviary moved to join the shed etc etc. I will keep you updated on the progress - its a bigger job than it looks

I agree with kaz, Your red mite issue can be combated with the right treatment. what you are using mustn't be enough to kill the mites. Also coopex can be bought at fodder stores - garden shops etc Its not something you get from a pet shop

Is This Possible
I am with you SW and all the others who agree - parakeet or even just "Keet" for those who are REALLY lazy, really bugs me too! Anyway, the "red" face is from a mineral block - they also come in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue - they are great fun on tricking the untrained eye

Scaley Face Not Always On Face
Thanks for that info dave. Will go and check my birds feet to make sure there are noone i missed - i too also look at the beak and cere for the signs of scaly face. I should note too, for members who may not have seen the other post, the featured bird had recently pigged out on beetroot and that is what the dark coloured staining on her feathers is
