They often seem to perk up just before they pass away I have had this happen in the past particularly with a couple of larger parrots and I get my hopes up the sign of improvement means they are on the mend, but sadly, it isnt the case and as the vet told me they often have a "last hurrah" of energy, before they give in to their illness. Sorry to hear of your losses, i hope the rest of your flock remain happy and healthy. :sadsorry:
  2. Well done Carolyn!! I am so pleased for you. It gives me heart that I wont die from stress before my competition next weekend. Mind you, with the way the weather is looking so far, it may just be cancelled and those sleepless nights and planning etc will just be a waste of time. But you never know, it might still be cool enough yet Once again, congratulations and I am happy for you that the experience was an exciting and pleasant one
  3. I tried to watch the first episode and it just doesnt have a patch on our Kath and Kim. I wont be watching the US version again, I would rather sit in the breeding room and watch my birds
  4. It is hard to pick up small babies, to try and get them gently between your fingers while they are so small, but as Kaz said, if you just use your other hand to gently roll them into your hand, it is an easier way of doing it. They are looking great and also, as said, wash your hands in warm water and make sure your hands are warm, cause babies dont like the cold! Well done Jodie
  5. Good luck with your budgie taming and future decisions. A tame baby budgie is generally easy to continue training as long as it is done away from flighty distractions. If you put a tame baby with a flighty bird, the baby will learn that there is something to fear, unfortunately, not the other way around. I agree with all the advice so far give and as Elly said, you really need to spend much more time than 10 to 15 minutes a day. If your baby is really flighty, I would even sit with a small cage on my lap while watching tv and just have my hand resting in the cage for as long as you can. The more time the better..........again good luck

I like the name Retro too. I also like Kaz's suggestion of Fresno, it sounds in my head like refreshing, outdoorsie type of name. I have no idea what Fresno is/means, but I think that's a cute name for your cute lil fella too
  7. Thanks guys Well, he slipped me $50 just before I left his place and then he called a bit later to see how I went and his opening line was "Well, cmon what did you buy". I told him and his only comment really was "I should have given you $100" hehe It's nice to have an indulging partner
  8. :lol2: No, it seems we cant and gee...............I WONDER who it was who only a few days ago said those famous words.......
  9. YaY!!! Great to have "Normal Neat" (well as normal as Neat gets ) back again!!!! So glad you AND your woofer are feeling so much better
  10. Today I went with a friend to a breeder's place who was culling some of his birds. She had made enquiries on my behalf. She has seen my birds and I have a lovely albino cock bird who I had told her I would really like a nice hen to pair with. I was also looking for show cages and this man had several. So, I was off to possibly buy an albino hen and some 2nd hand show cages. Then we looked at his cull birds. I had told Adam before I left, I was only going to possibly look at the hen and if he had any normal type birds, I would look at them. Well, I bought the hen, plus 4 other birds, NONE of them normals and he threw in another albino cock as he is an older bird but he did breed last year and he was quite a nice boy. So as well as the cages - this is what I came home with..... Albino hen (I only posted this girl, the other hen is a little smaller, but still a nice type and only a young girl) Albino cock Cinnamon dom pied cock - he didnt want to relax for his picture, so this doesnt really do him justice Green cinny spangle hen Recessive pied cock I HAVE NO SELF CONTROL !!!
  11. Well you cant say she doesnt enjoy her greens!!!!! Great picture
  12. Sorry to hear about your woofer Neat. I hope he is fighting fit soon as. Good luck with finding a new house and the big move!!
  13. Congrats JB!! Your input is always supportive and friendly, it's great to have you here
  14. Thanks Elly, your knowledge of mutations never fails to amaze me :laughter: Yes, dad is also opaline. I just checked the chest colour and its a colour I cant really describe lol. Its like a dirty greyish olive colour..... I will leave it a few more days and update pics. Thanks again for your help.....and your nice comments Jimmy :laughter:
  15. Unfortunately I had a loss with the babies here. I think I must have jinxed them going on about what a great first time mum she was  Anyway, last monday I found one of the babies dead in the nest. I picked up the other and realised it had nothing in its crop and I assume, for some reason, the parents just stopped feeding them :laughter: I gave the other baby a small feed, via syringe and put it in the lacewing nest as their babies were about the same age. The parents there then had 6 babies to feed and I kept checking in to see that it hadnt gotten too weak and was missing out on its share. It is doing fine with the lacewings, as you know from my other post a couple of their babies are close to fledging, so there are less babies in the nest now. Anyway, I have taken this on board to be a little more vigilant. I do look in on my babies every day, but I assumed here, that being only two in the nest and them both seemingly healthy, I had nothing to worry about. If I had picked them up and checked their crops, maybe I would have realised and could still have both babies. Always lessons to be learned. So I took a photo of the remaining baby as he is starting to feather up now. I would really like some opinions on what his colouring is. Cheers guys :laughter:
  16. Thanks for the update Karen, it's nice to see developmental pics and watch them grow :laughter:
  17. The family have been in the aviary for about a week now. I have been putting the babies out during the day and bringing them in at night, but the nights are warming, so they are staying out tonight. I got home from and did the rounds to check everyone is okay, and had to snap this shot. It's not exceptional, but I thought it was cute cause the whole family were all settling down for the night on one perch all together. The flash spooked the grey baby and he moved to another perch so in the 2nd shot its just the four of them, but I had to to to the other side so I could get my sky blue Lil Miss Fiesty in the picture as well Baby grey, mum, dad, baby yf, Miss Fiesty Miss Fiesty, baby yf, dad and mum
  18. You have just brought your baby home and it is quite possible it has barely been handled. It has come from its birth home, to be stuck in a pet shop (I am assuming) then brought to another strange environment. It will take quite a while for your baby to become used to its new home and you. Always move very slowly when your hand is in the cage, even resting your hand for a few seconds as you ease it over to whatever object you are moving/changing eg seed, water. Talk softly to Jellybean everytime you are near her cage and just take things very quietly and slowly. Time is a vital factor.
  19. I am going to just have a guess at this, so that I may learn from a correction if I am wrong :budgiedance: I think she is a recessive pied yellow face type 2 cinnamon spangle What a mix! She's quite cute I think
  20. Great job Liv! That picture looks very cute, I know its not supposed to but it still does lol I have a friend who is having problems with splayed legs in one particular nest, she seems to think mum sits too hard on the babies to keep causing this. I will try to bring her attention to your post when I see her next as I think its a great picture showing both the splayed leg and the splint. What did you make the splint out of??
  21. Congrats on finally finding your baby :budgiedance: I look forward to pictures too
  22. Good luck with your show. I am entering some of my first ever chicks in an unbroken cap show we have here soon. I guess initially, I was hoping I might impress someone, but now I am trying to convince myself not to be disappointed and as Renee said, just totally looking at it as a learning experience for what happens next time round. Once again good luck, I hope your experience is enjoyable :budgiedance:
  23. He looks like a cinnamon green to me :budgiedance:

  25. I'd love a Major Mitchell too, but it will always just be a dream for me :hap: Good luck with the baby, cant wait to see pics too!
