Need Some Advice From Members That Are Good With Genetics
Hi Splat, Atavism is extremely rare. I think you may have answered yiour question in your post. Cheers PT In that case I am extremely happy Chooky but I still don't understand how the last 2 chicks that hatched were the foster chicks because the eggs were marked in big black writing, and those 2 died and the yellow one is the biggest of the 3 that hatched in that nest. So maybe if it is the foster chick then it is going to be big because look how it has passes the other 2 and it has to be at least 5 days younger. But I thought it might be something to do with the grey op spangle because both her parents are the green series.

Mid 2011 Breeding Journal
It's a pain with they do that, I have been lucky up until now. I have 6 chicks in my dilute and that are between 51/2 weeks and 6 weeks and they parents are excellent, hen is laying again and all chicks are in the cage. I try and keep my chicks in with parents as long as possible sometimes up until they turn 8 weeks. But all that depends on parents of course.

Need Some Advice From Members That Are Good With Genetics
Why I am asking is because I did have 3 foster eggs in there and 2 hatched but they were the last 2 for sure and they died at a couple of days old. Well the smallest 2 died and I assumed they were the foster chicks anyway. The foster chicks parents are green series and spangles. The the yellow df spangle chick is the oldest and the biggest and the first one I rung. But looking at them today I am sure they belong to this nest I am asking about because they seem to have a narrow heads, the foster chicks should be super babies really, from 2 of my best birds. BUT then it is really a bit early 2 tell I guess. So RIP it can be a throw back but it doesn't happen often right. I actually hope it is a foster chick because they are the chicks I really want.

Need Some Advice From Members That Are Good With Genetics
okay my problem is. I have a white df spangle paired with a grey opaline spangle. white df spangle parents and grand parents are........................ white df spangle cock..................x..................grey cinnamon spangle hen .......x.......................................................................x. yellow DF spangle cock x cobalt spangle hen...............grey green spangle cock x sky spangle hen _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now the grey opaline spangle hens parents and grand parents are........................... Yellow Df spangle cock................x......................Lt Green opaline hen x............................................................................ x.. grey green spangle cock x sky spangle cock...................sky opaline cock x Lt green normal __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ They have 3 chicks. I would assume blue series or grey right but I have 2 white df spangles and 1 yellow df spangle. Now what I want to know is this possible because the hen is grey and there is green in the back ground. I have over a heap of chicks from this hen in the last couple of years and never a green series bird when put to a blue series bird. any help would be most appreciated and thank in advance, Neville are you there, you are great with genetics.

Is Epoxy Gloss Enamel Safe For Cage?
Kaz , now there is talk that the powder coated show cage fronts could be harmful to our birds too. There is talk of changing them back to the stainless steel.

Is Epoxy Gloss Enamel Safe For Cage?
Is that just the cheap cans of paint that you can buy from Bunnings or Super Cheap, if so I have used them on my wire fronts and I haven't lost a bird. Plus I have show cages in my aviaries that are painted with full gloss black enamel paint and all is fine. But saying that you are better off using a water base paint if possible, much safer for birds that chew everything in site.

New Breeder ... Need Help!
Personally I think you have taken it away from it's mum to early. 4 weeks would of been early enough and then you are risking it not getting enough nutrition. 2 1/2 weeks in my opinion is wrong. But after saying that good luck with him, but if the parents have any more chicks you could always put him back until he is a little older.

New Breeder ... Need Help!
I am just wondering why he was taken away from his parents at such a young age, wouldn't it have been a good idea for the parents to raise him or can't they for some reason, or are you trying to hand raise a bird from an early age for a tame pet.

Mid 2011 Breeding Journal
All my dark green birds are that colour Dave, that moult it out, I think like you said it is something to do with the split blue. My violet green cock and a dark green hen had heaps of chicks that colour, both birds are split for blue, actually both birds had a violet for one on their parents.

Congratulations Splat!
Thanks Dan , yes she was better from the nest at 5 weeks and then he the green improved but the hen is going to be nice, the green is a **** photo though I have to admit, he normally sits and blows and looks stunning but I just grabbed a quick shot in the holding cage, even his mask looks short in that photo and it is really long. I am really happy with them both of them but the other day I notice that hen put 3 toes forward on the perch and I looked in horror. I will have to keep an eye of her. The sky normal shows off all the time except in the show cage, lol I had to put an adult in with him to get him to stay on the perch and blow his head but it made him sit up right though.

Congratulations Splat!
Hi all I thought I would put some photos up of my winning birds, seem I at long last got a decent photo of the sky, but I haven't got a good one the green spangle but I haven't tried to yet. So here is my sky who won the blue class and best bird in show at the unbroken cap shield The light green spangle, 1st in teh normal spangle, not a good photo at all but this is his sister, she couldn't go to the shield because she has pin feathers from been plucked by mum on the back of the head

My 2011 Breeding Journal
Time for and Update on my breeding. I am winding down but still have some nest going I have a nest that had the white boy paired to his daughter a sky spangle they have 2 chicks. The white boy died at my hands several days ago. Their chicks here, but only one is the other I fostered because it was smaller, the other chick is from another nest it is a lutino. The lutino is a hen from a Lutino/ albino pairing. I did this for my clearbodies. Another nest is the dilute/dilute. they have 5 chicks one of the baby dilutes another one In this nest there is a grey split albino cock from a albino /grey and a dark green dom pied from a dark green dom pied/light green cinnamon , they have 2 chicks another pied in another nest because the hen plucked them stupid, are are quite small because of this but are getting bigger thank god. the same pied and the same pied with an older chick from my white boy that died, I paired him to and out cross a opaline grey hen and only one chick but she is looking very nice Violet green / violet sky spangle pairing, 2 chicks, The other chick is from the white boy/sky spangle Light green (Ron Blizzard cock x grey green cinn (my bird) they had 3 chicks 2 light greens and 1 grey green, in the nest there is a dilute and the other dom pied Violet yellow face / grey 4 chicks White df spangle / grey opaline spangle 3 chicks and 2 chicks from grey green spangle/ yellow df spangle ( the smallest chicks but one died yesterday and one the other died today, really disappointed because I really wanted those chicks more than any chicks that are here except for the the white boys. The cock belongs to Geoff and I only loaned him, He is out of my hen and his cock bird. I have one other nest with fertile eggs and waiting for them to hatch.

R&t's Breeding Journal
Some nice chicks there Renee. I had french moult last and it took over. It ruins a breeding season. My bird room is insulated and I thought it was getting to hot so I am finishing up. But the other day when it was thirty out side it was only 32 inside the bird room so I was fairly happy with that and we haven't done the veranda yet. But since then I put a bit of shade cloth on the door and window and i have it so it can roll up on nice days and roll down in the afternoon heat. It has drop the temperture by 2 degrees. But I am still finishing up.

What Size?
I use 14 and 16. I think the 14 is bigger and I use that one for food and the I use the smaller one which I thin is 16 for medication. It could be the other way around which number is which. I can't remember. but I do use the smaller one for meds and the larger one for food.

"the Fancy"
Funny that I actually didn't here them say the fancy at the shield but maybe I was in my own little world.

Half Yellow Half Green Feathers
The second photo of the father looks double factor spangle to me with bad suffusion, that would explain the spangle. and he is probably masking Dom pied too because the baby looks dom pied and spangle like Kaz said.

Whinge Of The Day
It is real bad around Numurkah, nearly in every paddock, even in the vacant lot next to my mums. It is a curse. Pretty from a distant but not for any farmer, they hate it the most. It is poison to horses if they eat a lot of it, well that is what we were told when my son had a horse, we use to run around the paddock and pull out any we could fine. Probably not true but at least the owner of the paddock had it no Patterson curse in there. lol

Whinge Of The Day
I thought I would note to that I have never had paterson curse grow here, I have always found the seed from Leeton very clean.
