Renee I did a post on it few weeks back ...I will be doing this ( by growing my own) and offering small amounts to my birds other wise overdose on the wheat grasscould lead to problems ....I will be using it for it's fertility other then the other stuff that people say it is good for,There is sooo much out there that is beneficial to us humans that birds can benefit from too ..I am looking to to the natural side of things and well I will do a few post later this week to share with you all........http://www.parrotparrot.com/birdhealth/wheatgrass.htm .okay ^ here is the link that i saved, it tells you how to grow it too!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish i kept mine now ...... to try this ... Deb - roxy still eats her Night cap ( budgie starter)
  3. Oh, okay well lets hope that the budgies aren't in that nest box or heaven forbid eggs or babies when you see it has fallen on the floor and has squashed one of them ... Don't you think that you should secure it first!!!! Bit of cash - Oh mate when you get money from breeding budgies let me know how!!!! As money is spent on seeds, and nutritional extras, up keeping of my birds - But If you think that you will get alot of money - best be rethinking mate! IF THEY BREED AND HATCH AND SURVIVE - $10 a baby! Not alot when you think about the time and effort it take to breed and raise them! Also they can only breed 2 times a year ( THIS IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF BUDGIES ) So all in all IF THEY LAY EGGS AND THE BABIES SURVIVE YOU WILL LOOK AT $100 for the babies in a YEAR! That is $8.30 a Month !!! I am sure you will spend more then that on them

I am seconding all that has been said!!! IT IS CRUEL TO BREED BUDGIES UNDER THE MATURE AGE! YOU ARE DEPRIVING THEM OF GROWING AND NUTRIENTS !!!
  5. Neat replied to Neat's post in a topic in Breeding Tips
Thank SW - I was waiting for a little Vetness to this I was sure that there would be side effect from breeding young that I wasn't aware of .... Smaller Budgies - Explains it all!!!!

  7. That is spot on KAZ & LIV This is why it is important to make sure that the 2 weeks leading up to breeding that the parents are in TOP HEALTH and get the required Vits, Minerals and food- and during hatching of the eggs they are given High Protien - High Calcium which gives them the best start in life

Totally Agree Mate! There are plenty of other Sites to talk budgies on - BUT NONE OF THEM have the vast range of experience like we do !!!!! It is important to understand too, that when we do make suggestions that we are doing it to be KIND .. As the saying goes CRUEL to be KIND... We (experienced breeders ) have been there done that - with at least 1/2 of us not having the support of BBC or other breeders behind us . So we tell you these things to save you VET BILLS, LOSS OF BIRDS & HEART BREAKS ... Please listen - we are here to advise you , Help you and support you - But if you chose to ignore our advice - We will say I TOLD YOU SO! ( well i will )

  12. I agree ! LIV i see it this way if you don't quarantine you don't CARE!!!!! It is much better to understand why with a visual image! So to all of you out there - if it is to gross to look at GOOD! imagine that in your cage / aviaries

Don't look here for approval!!!! Breeding Budgies under age isn't a good thing to do! Why you ask - Well lets state the obvious - They are young and aren't mature mentally to lay, incubate and raise young - THAT WILL ALL SURVIVE!!! Then there is the Physically part - Baby budgies bones and muscles are still growing and forming and developing! So you say , Well where do you think the eggs come from ??? The eggs that they lay are produced from their own calcium .... So I'll just add more cuttle bone in there ... WRONG ANSWER MATE! The calcium comes from their little bones and muscles so you are taking away all that they have just so you can get a few eggs, that may not even hatch!!!! It takes ages for the calcium absorption to take place ( vets will correct me on that one ) BUT budgie need vitamin D3 to help in the absorption of the calcium!!!! and this isn't found in any fruit or Veggies!!! The best thing to do if you want to breed is to BUY BUDGIE OF THE RIGHT AGE!!! Otherwise you will end up with a Dead Budgie on your hands !!!!!! I am so tired of hearing about people breeding budgies that aren't of the right age! You are basically giving them a death sentence - Maybe not right away but in the Near future!!! Wonder why your Hens can't lay eggs when they are 2 -3 years old ... Think about the impact that breeding them at the young age has caused their little bodies!!!! Young Hens are prone to Feather plucking ( due to boredom) Don't feed young enough! or often enough! Which leads to dead babies and all the babies and PARENTS will end up Malnourished ... because they are getting their own nutrients .... Seriously re consider the breeding of young! I am sure that you or your daughters wouldn't like to be mothers at the age of 10 !!!! Imagine the toll pregnancy has own our bodies! Now times that by 15 and you can see why we get so defensive when it comes to breeding young hens ADDED to FAQ along with directing members to this post for the discussion
  14. So you do not quarantine your birds ... FANTASTIC - WELL DONE - You have now just added the risk of infectious diseases to your other birds / flocks .... Want to know what you may have just caused Have a look !!! Bumblefoot Then there is .. Scaly Face & scaly Mites Mites French Molt PBFD These are only the visual diseases that you have just entered into your flock then there are the ones that you can't see MEGABACTERIA - CANKER - CHLAMYDIOSIS - WORMS & COCCIDIOSIS So next time you tell me that a bird has died when you haven't Quarantined Do NOT expect ((HUGS)) from me you have been told to quarantine for that reason BIRD OWNERS THAT LOVE THEIR BIRDS WILL QUARANTINE !!!! - Now the whole Vet thing - A pet is apart of your family, When your sick you go to the Dr don't you !!! Why deny your Budgie that too!!! Just because it is a $10 Bird doesn't mean that it will be a cheap bird for the rest of it's life - If you can not afford a vet bill GO WITH OUT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES OR A SHOUT AT THE PUB!!!!! HEALTH IS NO1 PRIORITY FOR HUMANS WHY DENY THAT TO OUR PETS
  15. No worries, I am happy to help ... After being told from too many breeders to use grit I did some research on it .... It is a fine line but there is Grit which is hard and course and there is Grit which is powdery and etc So this is where it can confuse alot of people they should change the name
  16. Neat replied to cynthz's post in a topic in Breeders Discussion

  17. Neat replied to cynthz's post in a topic in Breeding Tips

  21. I am sooo sorry to hear this mate... she wasn't eggbound was she??? Koudos for getting the feather out and fixing jack RIP little Roxy
  22. Neat replied to Neat's post in a topic in Health Questions and Tips
No mate, I didn't see a thing - No crawlies or nothing ... I goggled a few things and once i read " feather looks like it was eaten " I found the info to determine it is FEATHER MITES .. All the pieces came together too - the excess feathers everywhere & the constant preening ( thought it was due to molting) The blood feather I thought it was a sign of FM - That is why i am not mad at myself anymore - I didn't see anything ... But I know now what to look out for
  23. This is making it alot easier to understand with the pictures - Great post there Elly Clears up alot of confusion
  24. Neat replied to cynthz's post in a topic in Breeding Tips
There are a few different types of materials you can use for nesting - As Kaz has mention they don't BUILD nest like others Most common used materials are Wood shaving - Nesting moss and I am sure that Liv has suggested a while back Lucine Chaff as well good luck with the breeding
