  4. Glad you're back online Maesie!! How's your new place going?
  5. That's another good idea, thanks Denise!
  6. I just thought of another one: Huh? Who turned the lights on?
  7. I found this photo on the internet and thought it would make a good picture for a caption competition! I think she's saying "Well? What you lookin' at? Haven't you seen a bird preen before?? What do you think she's saying??
  8. Will do, thanks again
  9. No, there is no night light, but there will be from now on!! Necessary Jenene. It makes a difference. Anything can scare a hen off a nest.....cockroaches, moths, noises, anything really. If they cant find their way back in in the dark they sit on the perch with the cock leaving little pinkies with no warmth. Like people are so diverse in "smarts" or lack of, there are some really silly hens who need a roadmap to find their way back to the nestbox in the dark. With some light you will get budgie chatter through the night but an added bonus is parents feed through the night too and in turn feed their babies more as well. Thanks for the great advice Kaz. As I have my breeding cabinets in the garage I will leave the light on every night from now on. I thought of doing it before, but decided against it as I thought it might confuse them somehow ?? being daylight 24/7??

  11. They were 3 and 5 days old. Oh, they're definately dead It's even worse losing two!!
  12. I was devastated this morning when checking the nest boxes two of my baby chicks were dead. I am presuming it is because of the cold weather. The hen is a very good mother but sometime during the night they must have got very cold which caused their death. This is the first time I have lost very young chicks at this time of year. I put it down to bad luck and will be re-thinking about breeding them in winter if I have any more losses. Why does this always happen to the your best breeding pair??
  13. I think the white one is a boy, and I'm not sure about the spangle. I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out!! I love the white one too, he is gorgeous!!
  14. Here are some more pics of Deb's birds, they are turning into gorgeous budgies!! Love their colouring!
  15. The chicks are growing very fast and look great! They are just about fully feathered now - just a small bald spot on their heads but should be gone within a few days! . I brought them up inside for a little while tonight and they had a nibble on some millet sprays which they love! Will take some more pics in the morning!!
  16. The "NBC" stands for Newcastle Budgie Club. Hope this helps!
  17. I'm the same and was kind of scared also. It didn't help that he was squarking his head off with blue murder!!! lol... You might have yourself a new career Jenene... "clipper to the infertile and sexually frustrated" :budgiedance: Thanks for the idea Maesie!!!!
  18. I had almost given up on him as no matter what hen I paired him up with all the eggs were clear. I put him out in the aviary and intended just to keep him as a pet. But he is such a lovely bird I decided to try him one last time. I clipped his vent and paired him up with a nice hen. I candled the eggs this afternoon and 2 out of the 3 eggs are fertile.Cannot wait till they hatch!!! That's just awsome. I did the same with Tweet Tweet. His last clutch with Crackle was also empty, but a quick clip with the scissors... and well ahhhhh I have never had to clip birds before, so I was very nervous, I must have done it right!!

  20. Some of you might remember a while back I had a gorgeous blue and white pied show budgie (cock) that I have been trying to breed from for years, but have had no luck. Well I read here about clipping their vents and I did that. Now guess what?? The eggs are fertile!!!! I am so excited!!! I will take some pics tomorrow !!!! :hap:
  21. Hi Neat, yes I got it at Big W. They are priced at about $24.95 - it is bigger than I thought. I had a smaller one years ago which would probably suit budgies better as the perches are quite thick on this one. Hi Tam, not sure of the brand but they have them at Big W. The measurements are 50cm x 38cm. There is a smaller one you can get as well. This size is good though as there's plenty of room for all my budgies!!
  22. Great pics Liv, your birds look very happy! I put some gum leaves in the aviaries today and had a few left over, so I put some in the breeding cabinets. Well you should have seen them swoop! Even the hens on eggs came out to devour them!!
  23. Here is a shot of her - if you need a better close up let me know.
  24. I have just been pairing up some budgies and one of my hens has a slightly overgrown beak, can someone tell me how to go about trimming it please as I have never had to do this before! Thanks.
